- Description: This work describes the electrochemical properties of cobalt tetra-aminophthalocyanine (CoTAPc) complex electropolymerized at the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) abrasively immobilized onto a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (BPPGE). The constructed electrode displayed excellent electrocatalytic behaviour towards the oxidation of the herbicide, asulam, as evidenced by the enhancement of the oxidation peak current (~6 times) and the shift in the oxidation potential to lower values (by ~120 mV) in comparison with the bare BPPGE. The chronoamperometric detection of asulam which was carried out in 0.10 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) at a fixed potential of 0.65 V (versus Ag|AgCl) yielded excellent analytical parameters; a linear concentration range of 4.5–20 μM, a sensitivity of 241 × 10[superscript −3] μA/μM, a detection limit of 1.15 μM asulam (using the Y[subscript B] + 3σ criterion) and a response time of ~2 s.

- Description: Lead (II) pyridyloxyphthalocyanine (PbTpyPc) and its quaternized form (PbTepyPc) were synthesized and the photophysical behavior examined. Low fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) of 0.01 and 0.02 were observed for PbTepyPc and PbTpyPc, respectively. The singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) were 0.60 and 0.68, for PbTepyPc and PbTpyPc, respectively using DPBF as a quencher in DMF. Singlet oxygen production of the embedded sensitizers in electrospun fiber were quantified using ADMA and were found to be ΦΔ = 0.41 and ΦΔ = 0.21 for PbTepyPc and PbTpyPc, respectively. Photodynamic inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) with the quaternized photosensitizer at 5 μM, totally inactivated the E. coli (with log CFU = 10 decrease). Only 0.4 log CFU decrease was obtained with PbTpyPc. The embedded non-quaternized photosensitizer (PbTpyPc) was less active on the gram negative bacteria but the quaternized photosensitizer (PbTepyPc) was effective towards inactivation of E. coli. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.dyepig.2014.05.010

- Description: We investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the photoinduced electron transfer between surface-adsorbed indoline D149 dye and porous ZnO as used in the working electrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells. Transient absorption spectroscopy was conducted on the dye in solution, on solid state samples and for the latter in contact to a I−/I3− redox electrolyte typical for dye-sensitized solar cells to elucidate the effect of each component in the observed dynamics. D149 in a solution of 1:1 acetonitrile and tert-butyl alcohol shows excited-state lifetimes of 300±50 ps. This signature is severely quenched when D149 is adsorbed to ZnO, with the fastest component of the decay trace measured at 150±20 fs due to the charge-transfer mechanism. Absorption bands of the oxidized dye molecule were investigated to determine regeneration times which are in excess of 1 ns. The addition of the redox electrolyte to the system results in faster regeneration times, of the order of 1 ns. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/cphc.201200715

- Description: 2,4,6-Tris[3-thio-9,10,16,17,23,24-hexa(4-tertbutylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato ytterbium (III) chloride]-s-triazin (3) and its lutetium counterpart (4) were synthesized. The nonlinear optical behavior of 3 and 4 were characterized in solution and when embedded in polymer as thin films. Thin films of complexes 3 and 4 in poly(bisphenol A carbonate) showed improved nonlinear optical properties when compared to solution. Complex 3 showed a lower threshold for optical limiting intensity (Ilim) than complex 4, and for phthalocyanines in general. Ilim values were even lower in films compared to solutions. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.poly.2014.08.047

- Description: Peripherally and non-peripherally tetrasubstituted-[(N-methyl-2-pyridylthio)]phthalocyaninato magnesium (II) (5 and 6) and chloro aluminium (III) (7 and 8) tetraiodide have been synthesized and characterized. The photophysical properties of the complexes in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and aqueous medium in the presence and absence of cremophore EL have been studied. These complexes show high solubility in aqueous medium though they were aggregated. The triplet state quantum yields (FT) and the triplet lifetimes (tT) were found to be higher in DMSO with ΦT ranging from 0.32 to 0.51, while tT ranged from 282 to 622 ms in DMSO, compared to aqueous medium (pH 7.4 buffer) where ΦT ranged from 0.15 to 0.19 and tT from 26 to 35 ms. Addition of cremophore EL in aqueous solution resulted in partial disaggregation and increased photoactivity. The fluorescence lifetimes of the complexes showed strong dependence on their immediate environment. The ionic magnesium(II) and aluminium(III) phthalocyanines strongly bind to bovine serum albumin (BSA). , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.2478/s11532-013-0388-z

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis, characterization and photophysical studies of newly derived phthalocyanine complexes and the phthalocyanine–silica nanoparticles conjugates. The derived phthalocyanine complexes have one terminal alkyne group. The derived phthalocyanine complexes showed improved photophysical properties (ФF, ФT, ΦΔ and τT) compared to the respective phthalocyanine complexes from which they were derived. The derived phthalocyanine complexes were conjugated to the surface of an azide functionalized silica nanoparticles via copper (1) catalyzed cyclo-addition reaction. All the conjugates showed lower triplet quantum yields ranging from 0.37 to 0.44 compared to the free phthalocyanine complexes. The triplet lifetimes ranged from 352 to 484 μs for the conjugates and from 341 to 366 μs for the free phthalocyanine complexes.

- Description: The effects of solvents on the singlet oxygen, photobleaching and fluorescence quantum yields for zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and its derivatives; (pyridino)zinc phthalocyanine ((py)ZnPc), zinc octaphenoxyphthalocyanine (ZnOPPc) and zinc octaestronephthalocyanine (ZnOEPc), is presented. The effects of the solvents on the ground state spectra are also discussed. The largest red shift of the Q band was observed in aromatic solvents, the highest shift being observed for 1-chloronaphthalene. Higher singlet fluorescence quantum yields were observed in THF for ZnPc and ZnOPPC. Also in the same solvent phototransformation rather than photobleaching was observed for ZnOPPc. Split Q band in the emission and excitation spectra of ZnOPPc was observed in some solvents and this is explained in terms of the lowering of symmetry following excitation.

- Description: The synthesis of a zinc phthalocyanine complex tetrasubstituted with carbazole functionality at the peripheral position (complex 4) is reported. The singlet oxygen quantum yield of the complex was found to be 0.83 in dimethylformamide (DMF). The complex was subsequently conjugated to zinc oxide microparticles (ZnOMPs), the conjugation (formation of the amide bond) was confirmed by IR spectroscopy. The presence of ZnOMPs was found to reduce the singlet oxygen produced (ΦΔ = 0.63) in DMF. Polystyrene electrospun fibers of complex 4 alone and its conjugate to ZnOMPs were found to be thermally stable. The singlet oxygen quantum yield of the modified electrospun fibers was determined in aqueous media with ADMA as a singlet oxygen quencher and were 0.25 and 0.20 for complex 4 and 4-ZnOMPs embedded in fibers, respectively. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.dyepig.2013.12.019

- Description: Nanocomposites containing CdSe quantum dots, tetra(4-(4,6-diaminopyrimidin-2-ylthio) phthalocyaninatocobalt(II)) (CoPyPc) and reduced graphene nanosheets (rGNS) were devoloped and used for the modification of a glassy carbon electrode. Characterization of the nanocomposites was done by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used for electrochemical characterization of the prepared nanocomposite for oxygen reduction reaction. The oxygen reduction activity for rGNS/CdSe-CoPyPc nanocomposite was found to be superior over the individual nanomaterials in this study. The activity of the nanocomposite towards oxygen reduction was also tested for tolerance to methanol crossover effect using chronoamperometry (CA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/elan.201400372

- Description: (5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-(4-carboxyphenycarbonoimidoyl)phenyl)porphyrinato) chloro gallium(III) (complex 1) was conjugated to platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) (represented as 1-PtNPs). The resulting conjugate showed 18 nm red shift in the Soret band when compared to 1 alone. Complex 1 and 1-PtNPs showed promising photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans in solution where the log reductions obtained were 4.92, 3.76, and 3.95, respectively for 1-PtNPs. The singlet oxygen quantum yields obtained were higher at 0.56 for 1-PtNPs in DMF while that of 1 was 0.52 in the same solvent. This resulted in improved PACT activity for 1-PtNPs compared to 1 alone. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.saa.2015.06.088

Enhanced optical limiting behaviour of indium phthalocyanine derivatives when in solution or embedded in poly(acrylic acid) or poly(methyl methacrylate) polymers
- Authors: Sanusi, Kayode , Nyokong, Tebello
- Language: English
- Type: Article
- Identifier: vital:7256 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1020265
- Description: The optical limiting performance of indium phthalocyanine-based polymer thin-films with large nonlinear absorption coefficients (βeff) and low limiting threshold intensity (Ilim) are described. The absorption cross-sections and the population dynamics of the excited states are also reported. The excited state absorption cross-sections (σexc) are shown to depend on the transition moment between the T1 and T2 states. βeff values have been shown to be related to the population density of the molecules in the T1 state. The improved optical limiting performance recorded for the investigated phthalocyanine complexes in the presence of polymer matrices has been attributed to the aggregation effects of the complexes in the polymer thin-films. The optical properties of the indium phthalocyanine moieties were found to possess robust sensitivity to a change of the polymer materials. , Original publication available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jphotochem.2015.02.003

The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes exhibit reversible couples I–III and couple IV is quasi-reversible for complexes 5a, 5b, 6a and 6b. The first two reductions are metal-based processes, confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry to be due to Ti IV Pc 2 − /Ti III Pc 2 − and Ti III Pc 2 − /Ti II Pc 2 − redox processes and the last two reductions are ring-based processes due to Ti II Pc 2 − /Ti II Pc 3 − and Ti II Pc 3 − /Ti II Pc 4 − . Chronocoulometry confirmed a one-electron transfer at each reduction step. The electrochemistry of the above complexes is also compared to the previously reported 5c, 5d, 6c and 6d.
