  • Description: These are traditional children's verses whose meaning is obsecure as, it is believed, they are composite collections of odd lines. But the words sound well and so have survied. a) "The small chicken is angry. You have refused me everything. You have made me cross. It is enough to make me leave you" says the small chicken. b) A counting jingle. c) "I have walked with my sister. I have forgotten my bow and arrows. Go fetch them for me.   • Description: This new Mzeno of Komukomu is most unusual in that he has combined it with the Msumeto, the 'advance' Mzeno, with the 'retreat' Mtsumeto. It was composed in 1948. The melodies or counter subjects sung by the dancers are particularly pleasing and illustrate the wide musical potential of this form of passcaglia. The change from Mzeno to Mtsumeto occurs at 3m. 59s. from the start of the item. Komukomu was never afraid of innovations, and this was one of them. The fact that it did not last long and he reverted to the more usual form of separate Mzeno and Mtsumeto would indicate that it was not considered altogether satisfactory as a device. This item was recorded at the neighbouring village of Mavila. Two movements of orchestral dance with Timbila xylophones.

  • Description: This is the first Chopi Ngodo ever recorded and published. It is described in my book "Chopi Muscians" Oxford University Press. The recordings were taken on glass based acetate discs in November 1943 and copied onto tape in October 1963. With the exception of a few verses omitted from one or two of the lyrics this version, performed away from home in the broadcasting studios of SABC Durban, Natal, is the same as a village performance but without the dancers. The players themselves sang all the words which are normally sung by the dancers. As there were no dance routines to be completed during the performance, each item is rather shorter than it would have been in the home village. With these minor exceptions the Ngodo is the complete work; all of it the composition of its leader Katini, a leading figure in Chopi music for 40 years. He died in 1948 about 60 years old. Orchestral dance with six Timbila xylophones.
