- Description: The nature of the sustainability challenges currently at hand is such that dominant pedagogies and forms of learning that characterize higher education need to be reconsidered to enable students and staff to deal with accelerating change, increasing complexity, contested knowledge claims and inevitable uncertainty. In this contribution we identified four streams of emerging transformative, transgressive learning research and praxis in the sustainability sciences that appear generative of a higher education pedagogy that appears more responsive to the key challenges of our time: (1) reflexive social learning and capabilities theory, (2) critical phenomenology, (3) socio-cultural and cultural historical activity theory, and (4) new social movement, postcolonial and decolonisation theory. The paper critiques the current tendency in sustainability science and learning to rely on resilience and adaptive capacity building and argues that in order to break with maladaptive resilience of unsustainable systems it is essential to strengthen transgressive learning and disruptive capacity-building.

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis, characterization and photophysical studies of newly derived phthalocyanine complexes and the phthalocyanine–silica nanoparticles conjugates. The derived phthalocyanine complexes have one terminal alkyne group. The derived phthalocyanine complexes showed improved photophysical properties (ФF, ФT, ΦΔ and τT) compared to the respective phthalocyanine complexes from which they were derived. The derived phthalocyanine complexes were conjugated to the surface of an azide functionalized silica nanoparticles via copper (1) catalyzed cyclo-addition reaction. All the conjugates showed lower triplet quantum yields ranging from 0.37 to 0.44 compared to the free phthalocyanine complexes. The triplet lifetimes ranged from 352 to 484 μs for the conjugates and from 341 to 366 μs for the free phthalocyanine complexes.

- Description: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were used to separate amoxicillin from aqueous media. The parameters affecting amoxicillin adsorption such as pH, temperature, time, interferences of similar molecules, and the amount of adsorbent used were studied. Amoxicillin adsorption using MWCNT was compared to that using Fullerene C60 and activated carbon (AC). The adsorption efficiency of 0.1 and 0.2 g of MWCNT using in a continuous mode were 86.5% and 87.9%, respectively. Evaluation of the adsorbent capacity showed that each gram of MWCNT can absorb 22.9 mg amoxicillin. The effect of pH was studied over the range 2–8 and revealed that adsorption of the amoxicillin at the initial pH of 4.6 was more effective than any other pH. The adsorption of amoxicillin on MWCNT was much greater than Fullerene C60 and AC. Adsorption data showed that they were best fitted to the Langmuir isotherm.

- Description: A Renegade called Simphiwe is a “creative-intellectual portrait” of the public (and private) life of the musician Simphiwe Dana (p. 150). Gqola defines the book as “one writer’s engagement with the Simphiwe Dana of the South African public imagination [who]… troubles many categories of belonging in the South African public imagination in remarkable ways” (pp. 17, 32). The book comes at a poignant time as South Africa reflects on the success and challenges of the first 20 years of democracy. Fittingly, Gqola positions Dana within a long tradition of griots in Africa whose art always spoke truth to power.

- Description: Understanding the rates and causes of land-use change is crucial in identifying solutions, especially in sensitive landscapes and ecosystems, as well as in places undergoing rapid political, socioeconomic or ecological change. Despite considerable concern at the rate of transformation and degradation of the biodiversity-rich Albany Thicket biome in South Africa, most knowledge is gleaned from private commercial lands and state conservation areas. In comparison, there is limited work in communal areas where land uses include biomass extraction, especially for firewood and construction timber. We used aerial photographs to analyze land use and cover change in the high- and low-use zones of an urban commonage and an adjacent protected area over almost six decades, which included a major political transition. Field sampling was undertaken to characterize the current state of the vegetation and soils of the commonage and protected area and to determine the supply and demand for firewood and construction timber. Between the 1950s and 1980s, there was a clear increase in woody vegetation cover, which was reversed after the political transition in the mid-1990s. However, current woody plant standing stocks and sustainable annual production rates are well above current firewood demand, suggesting other probable causes for the decline in woody plant cover. The fragmentation of woody plant cover is paralleled by increases in grassy areas and bare ground, an increase in soil compaction, and decreases in soil moisture, carbon, and nutrients.

- Description: The spectroscopic and nonlinear optical properties of the positional isomers of metal free 4α-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) phthalocyanine are presented. Second order nonlinear polarizability (β), imaginary hyperpolarizability (Im(γ)) and imaginary susceptibility (Im[χ(3)]) values were determined for the four positional isomers. The measured β values of the four isomers displayed the following trend, C4h (34.0 × 10−5 m MW−1) > D2h (28.8 × 10−5 m MW−1) > C2v (22.8 × 10−5 m MW−1) > Cs (13.7 × 10−5 m MW−1).

- Description: This work reports on the conjugation of differently shaped Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) with ClGa(III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (ClGaTCPP). The resulting conjugates were used for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy against Staphylococcus aureus. The degree of photoinactivation is dependent on concentration of the conjugates, light dose (fluence) and illumination time. The log reduction obtained for ClGaTCPP when conjugated to cubic PtNPs was 4.64 log (which indicate 99.99% of the bacteria have been killed), which is much higher than 3.94 log unit for ClGaTCPPHexagonal PtNPs and 3.31 log units for ClGaTCPP-Unshaped PtNPs. ClGaTCPP alone gave a log unit reduction of less than 3, showing the importance of conjugation to PtNPs.

- Description: The synthesis of three A2B type Ir(III)triarylcorroles with meso-aryl substituents that provide electron donating (push) and withdrawing (pull) properties and three A3 type IrIIItriphenylcorroles with differing pyridine axial ligands is reported, along with their structural characterization. An analysis of the structure-property relationships in the optical and redox properties has been carried out by comparing their optical spectroscopy and electrochemistry to trends predicted in DFT and TD-DFT calculations. The results demonstrate that A2B type IrIIItriarylcorroles are highly efficient electrocatalyzed oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) and that their reactivity can be modulated by modulating the electronic structure by changing the nature of the meso-substituent at the B-positions, and even axial pyridine ligands.

- Description: The optical limiting performance of indium phthalocyanine-based polymer thin-films with large nonlinear absorption coefficients (βeff) and low limiting threshold intensity (Ilim) are described. The absorption cross-sections and the population dynamics of the excited states are also reported. The excited state absorption cross-sections (σexc) are shown to depend on the transition moment between the T1 and T2 states. βeff values have been shown to be related to the population density of the molecules in the T1 state. The improved optical limiting performance recorded for the investigated phthalocyanine complexes in the presence of polymer matrices has been attributed to the aggregation effects of the complexes in the polymer thin-films. The optical properties of the indium phthalocyanine moieties were found to possess robust sensitivity to a change of the polymer materials.

- Description: This paper reports on the photophysical behavior of (2-pyridylsulfanyl)phthalocyaninato zinc(II) and 2,9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetra-(2-pyridylsulfanyl)phthalocyaninato zinc(II) in the presence of differently shaped silver nanoparticles (nanospheres, nanotriangles and nanoflowers). The presence of shaped nanoparticles increased both triplet quantum yields and lifetimes of the tetra-substituted mercaptopyridine zinc phthalocyanine in DMSO. It is apparent from this work that the shape of the silver nanoparticle used is of little consequence in influencing photophysical behavior of the phthalocyanines.

- Description: Electrocatalytic behavior of 4-(4,6-diaminopyrimidin-2-ylthio) phthalocyaninato cobalt(II) (CoPyPc) when mixed or covalently mixed to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is reported. Infra-red spectroscopy was used to confirm amide linkage of the covalently linked nanocomposite. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) and cyclic (CV) voltammetry studies were used for the electrochemical characterization of the prepared phthalocyanine and MWCNT nanocomposite. The electrocatalytic effects of the nanocomposites of the cobalt phthalocyanine derivative were then investigated towards L-cysteine oxidation using both RDE and CV experiments, and the electrocatalytic performance of the covalently linked cobalt phthalocyanine-MWCNT was found to be superior over the mixed nanocomposite.

- Description: This paper reports on the synthesis of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) from an activated mixture of iron (II) phthalocyanine, its metal-free derivative and ferric acetate. The powdered mixture was activated by compression into a tablet by applying a force of 300 kN, followed by re-grinding into powder and heating it to high temperatures (1000°C). The activation by compression resulted in more than 50% debundling of SWCNTs as judged by transition electron microscopy. Acid functionalization of the SWCNTs was confirmed by the increase in the D:G ratio from 0.56 to 0.87 in the Raman spectra and the observation of an average of one carboxylic acid group per 13 carbon atoms from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA also showed that the initial decomposition temperatures for the activated and non-activated mixtures to be 205°C and 245°C, respectively. Hence, activation leads to the lowering of the pyrolysis temperature of the phthalocyanines. X-ray diffraction, electronic absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectra were also employed to characterize the SWCNT.

- Description: Gold nanoparticles (spheres, rods and bipyramids) were synthesized. The nanocrystals were characterized by UV–visible spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The as prepared gold nanoparticles were then conjugated to a quaternized 2,(3)-tetra [2-(dimethylamino) ethanethio] substituted Al(OH) phthalocyanine (complex 1). The conjugation of phthalocyanines with gold nanoparticles resulted in a decrease in the fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. Conversely, an increase in the singlet oxygen quantum yields was observed for the conjugated complex 1 in the presence of AuNPs.

A key issue of this discussion is whether voice is regarded as individual or social.

- Description: In this paper, I am concerned with elucidating and expanding our attitudes toward our own death. As it is, our common attitudes toward our death are the following: we fear our premature death, and we dread our inevitable death. These attitudes are rational, but I want to argue that our attitudes toward death should be more complicated than this. A condition upon our value, our preciousness, as creatures is that we are vulnerable, and our vulnerability is, at bottom, a vulnerability to death. A corollary of this is that we could not be loved, either by ourselves or by others, for one cannot love—be concerned for—a being invulnerable to death. As a consequence, death plays a deep and abiding role in our value systems. Our susceptibility to premature and inevitable death is a condition upon our being valuable creatures and, in turn, it is a condition upon our being loved. Given the high value that we place on being valuable creatures who deserve love, we should equally place a high value on the constitutive conditions for being precious and loved. If, as I suggest, one of these conditions is that we will die, we should see our deaths not simply as something to fear or dread, but as something of great importance in our lives. Our deaths should be treated with awe, respect, and even praise.

- Description: Porphyrin nanorods (PNR) have been fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly of two oppositely charged porphyrin molecules. The free base meso-tetra-(4-phenylsulphonate) porphyrin (TPPS4)4) served as negatively charged counterpart for the positively charged metallo meso-tetra(4-NN-methylpyridyl) porphyrins (MTM’PyP) with either Sn, Co, Mn or In as central metal M. Films of PNR were prepared on fluorine doped tin oxide glass sheets (FTO) by using a drop-dry method. The electronic spectra revealed J-aggregation of the charged molecules for the colloid PNR as well as for the films. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the formation of porphyrin nanorods. The laser microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the PNR/FTO films showed the formation of three kinds of structures in the films which consist of differently branched or linear needles with their main axis grown in the direction of the solvent flow during preparation. During cyclic voltammetry either applying negative potentials from 0.0 V to -1.0 V or positive potentials from 0.0 V to ++2.2 V irreversible reduction or oxidation reactions were detected for the films. Consistently, SEM images taken following cyclic voltammetry showed the disintegration of the PNR on the films into smaller subunits. Spectroelectrochemical measurements showed the formation of porphyrin anionic radicals during oxidation by a decrease in the absorption intensities and broadening of spectra with an additional band appearing around 900 nm. A similar trend was observed when negative potentials were applied but in this case the cationic radical was produced. In both cases the decrease of the intensity of the J-aggregate confirms a loss of intermolecular coupling, again consistent with the smaller subunits observed in SEM analysis.
