- Description: Two near-infrared (NIR) absorbing di(thien-2-nyl)-di(dimethylanilino)azaBODIPY dyes 2a and 2b were synthesized and characterized that differ depending on whether the dimethylaniline substituents are introduced at the 3,5- or 1,7-positions of the azaBODIPY core. The main spectral bands lie at 824 and 790 nm, respectively, in CH2Cl2. The effect of substituent position on the photophysical and pH sensing properties was analyzed through a comparison of the optical properties with the results of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Protonation of the dimethylamino nitrogen atoms eliminates the intramolecular charge transfer properties of these compounds, and this results in a marked blue-shift of the main absorption bands to 696 and 730 nm, respectively, in CH2Cl2, and a fluorescence “turn-on” effect in the NIR region. The pH dependence studies reveal that the pKa values of the non-protonated 2a and 2b molecules are ca. 6.9 (±0.05) and 7.3 (±0.05), respectively, while that of the monoprotonated species for both dyes is ca. 1.4 (±0.05) making them potentially suitable for use as colorimetric pH indicators under highly acidic conditions.

- Description: The synthesis of an optically active hemiporphyrazine with chiral binaphthyl substituents (1) is reported, providing the first example of the incorporation of an intrinsically chiral moiety into the macrocyclic core of a hemiporphyrazine analogue. A negative circular dichroism (CD) signal is observed in the 325–450 nm region of the CD spectrum of (S,S)-1, while mainly positive bands are observed in the 220–325 nm region. Mirror symmetry is observed across the entire wavelength range of the CD spectra of (R,R)-1 and (S,S)-1. An irreversible one-electron oxidation wave with an onset potential at 1.07 V is observed by cyclic voltammetry, along with a reversible one-electron reduction wave at −0.85 V. Density functional calculations reproduce the experimentally observed data and trends, and provide further insight into the nature of the electronic transitions.

- Description: The synthesis and characterization of a crown-ether-substituted 3,5-distyrylBODIPY dye with a 4-dimethylaminophenyl group at the meso-position is reported. The optical limiting properties were investigated at 532 nm, and the dye was found to have enhanced reverse saturable absorption responses during z-scan measurements. Theoretical calculations suggest that this may be due to the large dipole moment that is introduced by the benzo-fused crown ether and 4-dimethylaminophenyl substituents.

- Description: The synthesis and characterization of free-base and ZnII tetraazaporphyrins with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) or diphenylphenanthrene (DPP) moieties that are known to be aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active is reported. The optical spectra contain the characteristic Q and B absorption bands of Gouterman's four-orbital model and a broad envelope of weaker charge-transfer bands in the 450–600 nm region. The observed fluorescence emission lies beyond 670 nm and originates exclusively from the decay of the S1 state of the macrocycle, regardless of the excitation wavelength used. Theoretical calculations provide further evidence of strong electronic communication between the peripheral TPE or DPP moieties and the central ring. The ZnII complexes were found to have relatively high singlet-oxygen quantum yields.

- Description: Seven low symmetry A2B type Co(III)triarylcorroles with electron withdrawing meso-aryl substituents have been synthesized and characterized. A detailed analysis of the optical and redox properties has been carried out by comparing their optical spectroscopy, electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry to trends predicted in a series of DFT and TD-DFT calculations. The results demonstrate that Co(III)corroles are highly effective catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). Moreover, there is a marked enhancement in their homogenous catalytic ability when halogen atoms are introduced at the B position, which demonstrates that facile modifying the meso-aryl rings is a effective strategy for developing new HER catalysts. The electrochemical results demonstrate that an unusual two step modulation of HER reactions can be achieved by using singly and doubly electrochemical reduced cobalt triarylcorroles anions.

- Description: The absence of a secure long-term sustainable energy supply is recognized as a major worldwide technological challenge. The generation of H2 through photocatalysis is an environmentally friendly alternative that can help solve the energy problem. Thus, the development of semiconductor materials that can absorb solar light is an attractive approach. TiO2 has a wide bandgap that suffers from no activity in the visible spectrum, limiting its use of solar radiation. In this research, the semiconductor absorption profile was extended into the visible region of the solar spectrum by preparing porphyrin-TiO2 (P-TiO2 ) composites of meso-tetra(4-bromophenyl)porphyrin (PP1) and meso-tetra(5-bromo-2-thienyl)porphyrin (PP2) and their In(III), Zn(II) and Ga(III) metal complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were performed on the porphyrins to gain insight into their electron injection capability. The results demonstrate that P-TiO2 systems merit further in-depth study for applications that require efficient photocatalytic H2 generation.

- Description: The synthesis of a novel free base tetrakis(prop-2-ynyloxy)phthalocyanine (2) is described, along with its characterization by IR, UV-visible absorption, and 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The compound exhibited good solubility in a wide range of organic solvents and no significant aggregation was observed over a wide concentration range. The values for the singlet oxygen (ΦΔ), photodegradation, fluorescence (ΦF) and triplet state quantum yields and the fluorescence and triplet state lifetimes are reported. A relatively high ΦΔ value of 0.46 was obtained in DMSO. The ability to carry out "click" chemistry at the ligand periphery enhances the potential utility of 2 for use in bioconjugates in photodynamic therapy (PDT). A moderately high ΦF value of 0.18 is observed for emission in the therapeutic window in the near-IR region, which suggests that it may also be possible to determine the level of localization of 2 in tumor cells through bioimaging.

- Description: The synthesis and characterization of series of P(V) and Ga(III) A3 triarylcorrole complexes with 4-methylthiophenyl (2a, 3a), thien-3-yl (2b, 3b) and thien-2-yl (2c, 3c) meso-groups are reported along with the physicochemical and photodynamic activity properties of the dyes and their gold nanoparticle (AuNP) conjugates. The Ga(III) corrole series have lower fluorescence quantum yields and higher singlet oxygen quantum yields than the analogous P(V) complexes. Upon conjugation to AuNPs, the fluorescence quantum yields of the P(V) and Ga(III) corroles decrease, while the singlet oxygen quantum yields increase due to an external heavy atom effect. The P(V) and Ga(III) corroles exhibit relatively low in vitro dark cytotoxicity, which was further enhanced upon conjugation to AuNPs. The P(V) complexes and their AuNP conjugates display more favorable PDT activity properties upon illumination with a Thorlabs 625 nm light-emitting diode (288 J cm−2) with phototoxicity indices > 18.5 and 20.8, respectively, for the meso-thienyl-substituted 2b-AuNP and 2c-AuNP conjugates. Optical spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that this can be attributed to there being significantly less aggregation due to the presence of two trans-hydroxy axial ligands.

- Description: New covalent conjugates of aqua platinum(II) and octacarboxy-substituted zinc phthalocyanine, bearing one, two, three and four aqua platinum moieties on the periphery of the Pc ligand have been synthesized and characterized. The effect of the stepwise introduction of the aqua platinums on the photophysical and photochemical properties of these compounds has been investigated in dimethylsulfoxide solution. It has been found that aqua platinum moieties have only a limited effect on the dynamics of the singlet and triplet excited states, on the ability to sensitize singlet oxygen formation and on the photostability. Each conjugate has a high singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ 0.51–0.62) and thus retains potential for use as a dual action anticancer drugs by acting as a sensitizer for PDT in addition to the likely chemotherapeutic effects of the Pt(II) complexes.

- Description: A novel low-symmetry A3B-type phthalocyanine annelated with a pyrazino[2,3-f]phenanthroline ring system and substituted with six solubilizing diisopropylphenoxy-groups (1) was synthesized by metalfree DBU-promoted cross-condensation of diiminoisoindolines derived from 4,5- bis(diisopropylphenoxy)phthalonitrile and pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline-2,3-dicarbonitrile. The use of these particular precursors affords A3B phthalocyanine in 15% yield, while cross-condensation of the corresponding dinitriles yields only trace amounts of the target compound. Comparative studies of the A3B-type phthalocyanine and its symmetrical octa(diisopropylphenoxy)-substituted counterpart 2 reveal striking differences in the Q band regions of their UVevisible absorption (UVeVis) spectra, which could be readily rationalized through a comparison with calculated TD-DFT spectra. Since 1 can have two NH-tautomers with equivalent and non-equivalent NH-groups, and DFT calculations predict that the former tautomer is only 2.3 kcal/mol more stable than the latter one, a comprehensive analysis of 13C NMR spectra was carried out through the application of 1 He13C HMBC and HSQC techniques. It demonstrated that only the tautomer with equivalent NH-groups is present in solution.

- Description: Organoplatinum(II) complexes of calix[4]phyrin analogues, singly N-confused calix[4]phyrin (Pt-2), and doubly N-confused calix[4]phyrin (Pt-3), were synthesized and characterized. The explicit structures of these organoplatinum(II) complexes were elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies. The introduction of N-confused pyrrole rings to the parent calix[4]phyrin scaffold was found to have profound effects on the photophysical properties, such as the bathochromic shifts of both the absorption and phosphorescence maxima. The triplet excited state properties of these platinum complexes were analyzed by DFT calculations at the B3LYP level. The organoplatinum(II) complexes derived from the deformed scaffolds can serve as potent triplet sensitizers for singlet oxygen generation under aerobic conditions.

- Description: Sn(IV) porphyrins ([Sn(IV)TTP(3PyO)2] (5) and [Sn(IV)TPP(3PyO)2] (6) [tetrathienylporphyrin (TTP), tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP), and pyridyloxy (PyO)]) were prepared and characterized and their photocytotoxicity upon irradiation with 625 nm light has been studied. The presence of the 3PyO axial ligands was found to limit the aggregation and enhance the solubility of 5 and 6 in DMF/H2O (1 : 1). The photophysical properties and photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity of the meso-2-thienyl and meso-phenyl-substituted Sn(IV) porphyrins are compared. 5 and 6 were found to be photocytotoxic in MCF-7 cancer cells when irradiated with a Thorlabs M625L3 LED at 625 nm but remained nontoxic in the dark. The PDT activity of Sn(IV) meso-tetra-2-thienylporphyrin 5 was found to be significantly enhanced relative to its analogous tetraphenylporphyrin 6. There is a marked red-shift of the Q00 band of 5 into the therapeutic window due to the meso-2-thienyl rings, and 5 has an unusually high singlet oxygen quantum yield value of 0.83 in DMF. The results demonstrate that readily synthesized axially ligated Sn(IV) meso-arylporphyrins are potentially suitable for use as singlet oxygen photosensitizers in biomedical applications and merit further in depth investigation in this context.
