- Description: Black people live and work in very poor conditions in South Africa. They have always protested and resisted this. But at the beginning of this century, these protests were limited to a few groups of workers at any one time. There was no organisation for black workers. Then, soon after the First World War ended, a new movement appeared. It spread through the land like a veld fire. The people began to talk of their liberation, their new leaders and their organisation - the Industrial and Commercial Union (the I.C.U.). As a farm labourer from Standerton said: "Man we thought we were getting our country back through Kadalie".

Exploring the management-union relationship in an automotive component manufacturer

- Description: This study explored the management-union relationship in an automotive component manufacturer. The study was explorative and descriptive, using a qualitative approach. This was done in order to provide an accurate and valid representation of the factors and variables that are relevant to the research question. The sample of the study consisted of both members of management and union representatives who had been with the company before 2002. A combination of descriptive statistics and content analysis were used to analyse data from the survey questionnaire and interview guide. The literature review dealt with the overview of the South African industrial relations system, the need for the company to be globally competitive, the role of employee participation and the need for cooperative union-management relationships. Further, the usefulness of the Relationship by Objectives (RBO) intervention in creating and securing cooperative union-management relations was appraised. The company, in consultation with the union acquired the services of an independent third party to facilitate the RBO intervention. The findings illustrate that both management and the union found the institutional framework put in place by the RBO process helpful to their relationship in that it allowed both parties to engage with each other frequently, in a more respectful and structured manner. It is recommended that the company, through HR in consultation with the union and strengthen the forums of engagements currently in place by scheduling meetings in advance, accommodate each other in order to afford all stakeholders an opportunity to plan ahead and attend all forums of engagement where possible. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, Labour Relations and Human Resources, 2021

South African Trade Union responses to xenophobia in workplaces: the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA)

- Description: This research looks at how trade unions relate to immigrants and how inclusive they are to immigrants who form part of the South African working class. South Africa has been an immigrants receiving country for decades, where most immigrants are from neighbouring countries within the South African region. It was the trade unions that empowered workers to gain back some of their basic rights during the apartheid era, and they did this for all workers who worked in sectors where they were exploited and mistreated by the apartheid regime on the basis of their skin colour. This research aims to understand how trade unions respond to xenophobia in the workplace, and the ways their strategies increase inclusion of immigrants in the trade unions. This research focuses on the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), seeking to find whether they have strategies and planned ways to respond to xenophobia in South African workplaces. This research also looks at the impact of nationalism in South Africa on immigrants. It shows that whilst the concept of nationalism is to protect South Africans, it does exclude immigrants because it places South Africans before immigrants when it comes to benefiting from the resources of the country. This shows that protecting one section of the working class over another weakens the working class movement. To get views from the trade unions, trade union officials were interviewed and from the interviews, common themes were picked out. From the interviews, it can be identified that trade union officials believe that immigrants should be included in the trade unions, and they should be treated with dignity. However, there are some conflicting themes, which highlight the view that South African locals deserve to get the resources of the country, such as housing, before immigrants. The themes will be discussed in the research to highlight the different perspectives that came from the trade union officials.
