- Description: Stereotypical views and misrepresentation impact on how women experience ‘invisible’ gynaecological illnesses such as endometriosis. Patriarchal society forces a particular set of roles and standards upon women to which they must adhere and thus, a limited understanding exists as to how they experience their lived realities with endometriosis. This study consists of two components. The first component is a theoretical component in which I analyse how a visual narrative approach can be utilised in order to portray the lived experiences of women with an invisible illness. In support of this research I reflect on the work of Frida Kahlo, Georgie Wileman and Ellie Kammer in order to determine how these artists addressed the experiences of their illnesses within visual representation. The second part is the practical component informed by theory, interviews and auto-ethnographic data. This study established that women with endometriosis are largely influenced by the societal expectations placed on women as well as how the female body is represented by the media. By visually presenting the lived realities of women with endometriosis, the misperceptions of the disease and its effects are better understood. This study concludes having created a series of visual narratives which expresses internalised pain and emotions, and makes visible that which is invisible about endometriosis. Recent research indicates that exposure to new technologies and programming concepts at the school level can influence a scholar’s IT career choice. Theories relating to career choice have focused on the characteristics of individuals and their environment. Career choice models have identified factors that influenced a student’s career choice.In South Africahowever,there have been limited studies investigating the factors influencing students’ career decisions in choosing careers in Computer Science (CS), Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT)using mixed-methods.This study aims to investigate the factors that influence first-year students’ decisionsin choosing an IT career at the Nelson Mandela University.The research study pursueda pragmatisticapproach,using a mixed-methods approach. Managing the corporate reputation of a transforming organisation: a study of multimedia University of Kenya

- Description: Universities, like other organisations, are challenged to manage corporate identity and reputation to maintain a competitive edge. Few studies in Africa focus on the impact of internal communication on corporate identity and reputation management during organisational transformation. Thus, this study interrogated how a transforming and complex university in Kenya managed the corporate identity, image and reputation for competitive advantage. The purpose of the study was to establish how Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) management communicated with its employees to nurture the corporate identity, image and reputation during a ten-year period of transformation. The study draws insights from in-depth interviews with 23 university management members, 178 self-administered questionnaires through random stratification of MMU employees, and content review of two MMU strategic plans ranging from 2011 to 2021. The findings suggest that MMU management used formal and interactive channels to create awareness of organisational transformation. These channels included face-to-face engagements, formal meetings and mediated communication through telephone conversations and intranet that facilitated record keeping. The management engaged in top-down and bottom-up communication to build employee trust, while employees expressed reservations of bottom-up information accuracy, suggesting information exclusion. On the contrary, the employees preferred digital and interpersonal channels for internal communication, which included telephone conversations, social media, personal visits by MMU management, and university events. Publicity activities were to disseminate information to prospective students and sponsors through selected private television, vernacular radio, and MMU radio stations, traditional print media, and the MMU website to communicate the MMU brand and image. Employees acknowledged that MMU brands itself as a leader in telecommunication, technology, mechanical, manufacturing, and media training through state-of-the-art equipment, robust faculty, and problem-solving ventures through research. The current study proposes stronger employee involvement, executive packaging and positioning, coaching successful faculty members as brand ambassadors, retraining employees, and employee participation in policy formulation to enhance new culture. In addition, these opositions will enhance the corporate identity, brand, as well as university performance, product quality, policy and processes to enrich the corporate reputation during transformation. The findings challenge university management to actively engage the corporate communication function, emphasise employee participation, and focus on the continual improvement of corporate identity and reputation management practices for competitive advantage. The current study proposes a participative, multi-layered and multi-dimensional communication model for efficient and excellent internal communication. - Description: This study is motivated by a gap in a competent framework to adequately compensate communities whose land are expropriated for public use by the Government of Zimbabwe. It seeks to explore the extent to which the Memorandum of Understanding between the Mberengwa Rural District Council and the affected people of Mberengwa resulted in a fair and adequate compensation which specifically provided for rehabilitated livelihoods. The main objective is to determine whether the compensation was adequate and satisfying for the Mberengwa community and to this end, a qualitative methodology is utilised to collect and analyse data. The findings reveal that the Memorandum of Understanding did not provide for adequate land that adequately compensated for the expropriated land. The affected community also did not benefit from a possible rehabilitation of livelihoods. By the end of the study, the Mberengwa compensation had not been concluded and the programme, which was expected to be completed in October 2015, had not closed. The researcher recommends a competent project management strategy, PRINCE2 to ensure comprehensive planning that ensures stage-based delivery of the agreed compensation products. - Description: This study deals with the conceptual analysis of the challenges experienced by military peacekeepers in the United Nations (UN) operations. The research focused on the problems that military personnel encountered during the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) between 2005 and 2011. Many findings summarised from the respondents and through documents reviewed elucidated various challenges peacekeepers in UN missions experience. This study’s specific objectives were to assess the necessary preparations that made military peacekeepers operationally ready for the UNMIS Peace Support Operations (PSO); to determine whether there was any pre-deployment training conducted for military peacekeepers during the UNMIS; to investigate whether there were command and control issues in the mission; and finally, to examine whether military peacekeepers were acquainted with the fundamental UN principles and core values. The study used the purposive sampling technique to identify relevant subjects best suited to provide informed feedback through interviews and a questionnaire. Most of the respondents were from Botswana and Malawi, with additional valuable subjects from the different countries who participated in the UNMIS as staff officers, formed units, and observers. The level of operational readiness of individual military personnel was found inconsistent among participants from different countries due to the varying level of attention given to pre-deployment training and planning. Some individuals did not know about the UN core values, principles and critical resolution documents such as the Status of Mission Agreement (SOMA), Status of Force Agreement (SOFA), Rules of Engagement (ROE), and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that were critical towards operationalising the UNMIS mandate to achieve the operational objectives. The concepts of command and control and reporting procedure continue to cause severe rifts between uniformed personnel and their civilian counterparts. An important aspect that inhibits the growth of solar energy is accurate solar resource data. Such data is needed because knowledge of the future reliability and quality of energy production is required to analyse a system’s performance and determine financial implications (Sengupta et al., 2017). Effect of coal and microalgae biomass co-firing on CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions: An experimental evaluation

- Description: There is increasingly stringent legislation on the environmental impact of energy production from coal combustion, and this has led to growing pressure to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Thus, there is a significant need to develop and implement clean coal combustion technologies that would reduce the environmental gas pollutants. For power generation, the co-firing of biomass fuels at conventional coal-fired power stations is recognised as one of the low-cost, low-risk options to achieve significant reductions in GHG emissions. When coal is co-utilized with biomass there is added attractiveness because the biomass is CO2 neutral, and there is interest in using waste biomass and microalgae. Thus, the co-combustion of coal and biomass for energy production results in pollutant reduction, especially in the emissions of NOx, SOx, volatile organic compounds and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The synergistic activity observed for toxic organic emissions is not well understood and is thought to involve chemical interaction between the volatiles from each fuel coupled with possible catalytic activity from the inorganic constituents of the fuels. The characterization of co-firing products and gases emitted from coal and microalgae (particularly the Scenedesmus strain) co-combustion has received limited attention. Therefore, this study seeks to understand possible interactions occurring during co-combustion of coal and Scenedesmus microalgae (Coalgae®). Additionally, the study aims to determine the effect of co-firing coal and Scenedesmus microalgae on CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions. The term “Coalgae®” refers to the mixture of coal and microalgae biomass. The study looks at physico-thermal characteristics as well as CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions of various coal-microalgae blending ratios by mass; 100:0 (coal), 95:5 (Coalgae® 5%), 90:10 (Coalgae® 10%), 85:15 (Coalgae® 15%) and 80:20 (Coalgae® 20%). Characterization techniques carried out included proximate and ultimate analyses, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). For combustion studies two techniques were applied. Low heating rate was obtained through a Thermogravimetric-Mass spectrometer analysis (TG-MS). Other combustion experiments were performed on the five lumpy fuels (coal and Coalgae® 5% - 20%) exposed to the flame in a fixed-bed combustion reactor. The emission concentrations of CO2 (%), NOx (ppm) and SO2 (ppm) of coal and Coalgae® blends were measured during the combustion of the five materials using a Lancom 4 portable flue gas analyser. The mass reduction (g) and temperature (°C) at the reactor exit were recorded during the combustion tests to compare the combustion behaviour of the four mixtures to that of raw coal. TG-DTG curves of coal and microalgae confirmed that the combustion behaviour of these materials was different. Coal showed one reaction during the combustion process, while microalgae and the Coalgae® blends showed three reactions. A significant reduction in activation energies of 160.4 kJ/mol, 159.6 kJ/mol, 151.3 kJ/mol, and 134.2 kJ/mol for Coalgae® 5% - Coalgae® 20%, respectively, compared to coal (161.3 kJ/mol) was achieved. The lowering of activation energy could be attributed to the relative fixed carbon content. SEM morphology images of ash obtained from the combustion of coal and Coalgae® 5% - 20% confirmed changes in devolatilization and combustion behaviour of solid raw fuel. The ash of Coalgae® blends had higher fluxing elements (Fe, Ca, K and Mg) than coal and this shows possibility of slagging and fouling in combustion systems. The Coalgae® blends showed a synergistic effect due to different combustion characteristics of coal and Scenedesmus microalgae. The combustion results obtained from the fixed-bed reactor showed significant reductions in concentrations of CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions for Coalgae® blends compared to baseline coal. Microalgae reduced CO2 emissions from baseline coal by 14.9%, 19.5%, 23.5% and 31.4% for Coalgae® 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, respectively. SO2 reductions of 1.9%, 10.6%, 15.8% and 18.2%, and NOx reductions of 22.4%, 26.1%, 24.4% and 16.9% were achieved with Coalgae® 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, respectively. Moreover, the combustion efficiency of Coalgae® blends increased significantly by up to 14.5% from baseline coal (86.4%) to Coalgae® 20% (98.9%). Based on the above findings, the co-firing of coal and Scenedesmus microalgae biomass was necessary for the reduction of CO2, SO2, and NOx emissions. - Description: There is increasingly stringent legislation on the environmental impact of energy production from coal combustion, and this has led to growing pressure to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Thus, there is a significant need to develop and implement clean coal combustion technologies that would reduce the environmental gas pollutants. For power generation, the co-firing of biomass fuels at conventional coal-fired power stations is recognised as one of the low-cost, low-risk options to achieve significant reductions in GHG emissions. When coal is co-utilized with biomass there is added attractiveness because the biomass is CO2 neutral, and there is interest in using waste biomass and microalgae. Thus, the co-combustion of coal and biomass for energy production results in pollutant reduction, especially in the emissions of NOx, SOx, volatile organic compounds and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The synergistic activity observed for toxic organic emissions is not well understood and is thought to involve chemical interaction between the volatiles from each fuel coupled with possible catalytic activity from the inorganic constituents of the fuels. The characterization of co-firing products and gases emitted from coal and microalgae (particularly the Scenedesmus strain) co-combustion has received limited attention. Therefore, this study seeks to understand possible interactions occurring during co-combustion of coal and Scenedesmus microalgae (Coalgae®). Additionally, the study aims to determine the effect of co-firing coal and Scenedesmus microalgae on CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions. In South Africa waste tyre recycling is in three industries, one of which is crumb rubber where waste tyre is applied into various sized particles called crumb rubber. Crumb rubber can be applied in environmental remediation as an organic and inorganic pollutants’ adsorbent. Considering the fact that South Africa’s environment is loaded with heavy metal pollutants due to contributions by mining and agriculture as examples, it is postulated that crumb rubber produced in South Africa could be used to remediate the environment of these toxic metals. In this study adsorption of Pb (II) and Cu (II) from the synthetic waste water using waste tyre crumb rubber produced in South Africa was studied. Crumb rubber was activated using aqueous NaOH (0.02%) to make crumb rubber wettable followed by it being treated with 0.02 % acidified KMnO4 for modification of its ability to sorp positively charged metal species. Trial sorption experiments on 50 mg / L Cu (II) were successful with sorption of over 70% in 250 minutes. Final optimization of the sorption of combined Pb (II) and Cu (II) was studied using a full factorial design and optimum conditions of sorption were found to be pH 5.4; [metal] 0.617 mmol / L for Pb (II); and pH 5.4; the optimization of Cu (II) was found to be pH 5.4; [metal] 0.777 mmol / L. In Pb (II) sorptions the mechanism of adsorption on the activated crumb rubber was found to be following the Freundlich model indicating that the adsorption seemed to occur on a multilayer adsorbent, while the mechanism of copper(II) adsorption on to the activated crumb rubber was found to be following Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption seemed to occur on a monolayer. It forms a basic guide for the listener as to how these works were conceived and constructed, and how both African and Western music elements have been used in order to achieve a syncretism. My commentary endeavours to show the compositional techniques applied when writing these works, and how my cultural interactions, music training and experience as a professional opera singer influence my compositional output. Part two contains the creative content of the portfolio: a set of scores of the three works themselves, as well as accompanying recordings of these works, with a total duration of ca. 100 minutes of music.
