  • Description: The Konsolo dance is said to have been performed in the 1930's. Two wives in next door huts call to each other. The one hears the dog bark and calls out the other, "why is the dog barking?" thinking her husband is with her. But the other replies: "No! he is not with me. He is out with that young beauty". (Ndege-aeroplane). A young good looking girl is called 'Ndege' (aeroplane) in the local slang. "Yap, yau, yap, why is the dog barking? Don't you hate beating me because you think our husband is in my house. He is not here because there is Ndege elsewhere." Konsolo women's dance with clapping.

Even to make a canoe, he needs a pass. Now he is going back to Portuguese territory over the border because there you can do what you like without a single pass, just what you like! When they got to his garden he was not there but at a place where an elephant had died and he was eating it. "He has not come to the garden, I thought I might go and see. He has not come. The elephant died at Magala, I wanted to see it, Kwakwala." The gourd rattles themselves give their name Chitsukulumwe to the dance which they accompany. In some cases disobedient girls can be caught and beaten. It is an initiation dance for boys but the women instructors can use them for this purpose.   • Description: The leg rattles are made out of the hard shell fruit of the Vitanta tree. It is an edible fruit which is picked when ripe, boiled in a pot and then the seeds are extracted through a small hole at the spot where the stem joins the fruit. It is then dried. A number of pin head size holes are made in the sides "to let the sound out" , they say, a second hole is made opposite the stem hole and the shell are then filled with canna seeds or small stones and strung onto sticks. Four rows of shells of about 6-8 each are needed to make one leg rattle which is attached to the calf of the leg by two straps, one below the knee and the other at the ankle. Mbanda dance song with Malaza leg rattles.
