- Description: Heterogenous photocatalysts based on electrospun fibers composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone and titanium propoxide were prepared and heated at 500, 750 and 950 °C to obtain anatase and rutile fibers. The fibers were then decorated with Pd and Co nanoparticles as well as a symmetrical zinc phthalocyanine (Pc). The fibrous materials obtained have a paper-like macroscopic appearance allowing for easy handling and separation. The photocatalytic activities of the new materials were evaluated for the generation of H2 upon UV (368 nm) or visible (630 nm) light excitation. Depending on the heat treatment or the post-synthetic decoration method, the materials show higher, or similar, activity compared to P25-TiO2, with superior ease of separation. The catalysts showed ability to degrade organic matter, with MeOH used as a model compound. This is of considerable importance for potential water treatment applications that will require flow-compatible materials.

- Description: Zinc phthalocyanines containing one (mono carboxy phenoxy, ZnMCPPc), four (tetra carboxy phenoxy, ZnTCPPc), and eight (tetra isophthalic acid, ZnTIPAPc) carboxyl groups were covalently conjugated to amine-functionalized glass wool (GW). The GW-Pcs were characterized and evaluated for singlet oxygen generation. The photocatalytic efficiencies of the GW-Pcs were assessed using methyl orange. Glass wool alone and the modified conjugates exhibited low to no degradation of methyl orange in the dark. The improved catalytic rate was observed for GW-ZnMCPPc and GW-ZnTCPPc compared to GW-ZnTIPAPc due to the latter's lower singlet oxygen quantum yield generation. In addition, the modified glass wool was recyclable, making it suitable candidates for future environmental applications.

- Description: In this work, we synthesized water-soluble L-cysteine-capped alloyed CdSeTe core quantum dots (QDs) and investigated the structural and optical properties of deposition of each of CdS, CdS/ZnSe and CdS/ZnSe/ZnS shell layers. Photophysical results showed that the overcoating of a CdS shell around the alloyed CdSeTe core [quantum yield (QY) = 8.4%] resulted in effective confinement of the radiative exciton with an improved QY value of 93.5%. Subsequent deposition of a ZnSe shell around the CdSeTe/CdS surface decreased the QY value to 24.7%, but an increase in the QY value of up to 49.5% was observed when a ZnS shell was overcoated around the CdSeTe/CdS/ZnSe surface. QDs with shell layers showed improved stability relative to the core. Data obtained from time-resolved fluorescence measurements provided useful insight into variations in the photophysical properties of the QDs upon the formation of each shell layer. Our study suggests that the formation of CdSeTe/CdS core/shell QDs meets the requirements of quality QDs in terms of high photoluminescence QY and stability, hence further deposition of additional shells are not necessary in improving the optical properties of the core/shell QDs. - Description: The design of electrochemical immunosensors for the detection of measles-specific antibodies is reported. The measles-antigen modified surface was used as an antibody capture surface. The detection of measles-specific IgG antibodies was accomplished using the voltammetric method and horse-radish peroxidase (HRP) labeled secondary antibody (anti-IgG) as a detecting antibody. The potential applications of the designed immunosensor were evaluated in buffer and serum solutions. The immunosensor exhibited good linearity at concentrations less than 100 ng mL−1 with R2=0.997 and the limit of detection of 6.60 ng mL−1 at 3σ. The potential application of the immunosensor was evaluated in the deliberately infected human and newborn calf serum samples with measles-IgG antibody mimicking real-life samples. The designed electrochemical immunosensor could differentiate between infected and un-infected serum samples as higher catalytic currents were obtained for infected serum samples.

- Description: In this research report, we prepared an electrochemical sensor based on the molecularly imprinted poly(p-aminophenol) supported by silver nanoparticles capped with 2-mercaptobenzoxazole for the selective and sensitive detection of endocrine disrupting 17-β-estradiol (E2). The electropolymerization of the functional monomer prepared the proposed molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) composite-based sensor in the presence of E2 as a template. The recognition materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction techniques. The electrochemical measurements were performed by employing both CV and SWV methods. We did the optimization of critical parameters affecting the sensor performances through the experimental design and verification. The developed sensor showed a linear range from 10 pM to 100 nM with the calculated quantification and detection limits of 1.86 and 6.19 pM, respectively. The incorporation of AgNP with high electrical conductivity into the MIP matrix enhanced the sensor's performance. Furthermore, the sensor was applied to determine E2 in real water samples without any sample preconcentration steps to achieve the percent recovery of 91.87% to 98.36% and acceptable reusability and storage stability performances.

- Description: An amperometric sensor, based on carbon paste impregnated with iron (II) phthalocyanine complex (FePc), has been constructed for the assay of anti‐HIV agent dideoxyinosine (didanosine, DDI). Using chronoamperometry (E = +1.04 V versus Ag/AgCl) technique, the amperometric sensor can be used reliably for dideoxyinosine assay at pH 7.4 phosphate buffer in the 1.5–9.5 nmol/L concentration range with a detection limit of 5.7 × 10−10 mol/L. The surface of the electrode can easily be regenerated by simple polishing, obtaining a fresh surface ready for use in a new assay. The new amperometric sensor proved to be highly reliable for the assay of dideoxyinosine purity in raw material as well as for the uniformity content test of Videx® tablets.

- Description: The nanophotosensitizers based on acetophenoxy tetrasubstituted metallophthalocyanines (MPc) and detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) were successfully formed and their photophysicochemical properties were determined. The zinc(II)Pc and indium(III)Pc complexes along with their nanoconjugates were found to have high singlet oxygen quantum yields (0.72 − 0.84) associated with the heavy central metal effect. The ability of the functional groups present on the DNDs to bind to the bacteria cell and the improved solubility of the nanoconjugates due to DNDs resulted in effective photodynamic antimicrobial therapy (PACT) activity against S. aureus planktonic cells, with the highest log reduction of 9.72 ± 0.02 for the conjugate of InPc conjugate with DNDs after 30 min irradiation. PACT studies were investigated at a dose of 10 μg/mL for each sample. The results suggest that the readily synthesized nanoconjugates can be used as appropriate PACT agents.

- Description: In this study we report on the synthesis of tetrakis [4-(4-(5-chloro-1H-benzo [d]imidazol-2-yl) phenoxy phthalocyaninato] manganese (III) chloride (MnPc). The MnPc was first used to modify a glassy carbon electrode, followed by the growth of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the MnPc modified electrode to form MnPc-AgNPs modified electrode. The modified electrode was characterized using cydic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, scanning electrochemical microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modified MnPc-AgNPs electrode was employed for the detection of hydrazine. The MnPc-AgNPs gave better current responses for electrooxidation of hydrazine relative to MnPc and AgNPs, individually. The catalytic rate constant was 1.90 x 10(5 )M(-1) S-1, with the detection limit (LoD) of 2.42 pM (using 3 sigma notation), and sensitivity of 61.56 mu A mM(-1), for MnPc-AgNPs. - Description: The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 and ZnO based catalysts, which is based on their ability to generate electron–hole pairs upon photoillumination is limited due to their wide band gaps and lack of efficient retrievability post-application. This work reports on the fabrication, characterisation and comparison of electrospun TiO2 and ZnO nanofibers when bare vs when functionalised with a phthalocyanine. The generated photocatalysts are attractive because they absorb visible light and are easily retrievable and hence reusable. With the Pc anchored onto their surfaces, the anatase TiO2 nanofibers and the wurzite ZnO nanofibers possessed singlet oxygen quantum yields of 0.22 and 0.16 in water, respectively. Evaluation of the photocatalytic efficiencies of the nanofibers was conducted by studying the photodegradation of methyl orange. The Pc decorated nanofibers were found to be more effective photocatalysts than the bare ones with the phthalocyanine TiO2 nanofibers being the best. The degradation kinetics were found to follow pseudo first order kinetics and obeyed the Langmuir Hinshelwood model. The nanocatalysts reported herein are therefore feasible candidates for real-life water purification applications.

- Description: The synthesis and characterization of the tetra-4-benzyloxyphenoxy substituted metal-free phthalocyanine (H2Pc) is reported for the first time. Formation of the photoinduced gratings has been experienced in a metal-free phthalocyanine doped nematic liquid crystal (LC) system and its I–V properties are characterized by electrical measurements. Four samples are prepared at different doping percentages and in homogenously aligned sandwiched geometry. We report the results of two set of experiments on these samples. One of them is the grating diffraction experiment for the analysis of optically induced reorientation process which is a basis for possible holographic applications. Accessible diffraction efficiency is found to be linearly increasing as the amount of the phthalocyanine doping rises. In the scope of the other set of measurements I–V peculiarity of the system is also found to be enhanced and linearly dependent on doping.

- Description: We report on nonlinear optical properties of tris[(4-tert-butyl)-2-thio (phenyl)acetic acid (1) and tris(dimethyl-5-(3,4-phenoxy) isophthalate (2) phthalocyaninato zinc (II) complexes. The synthesized complexes were covalently conjugated to glutathione-capped CdTe/ZnSe/ZnO quantum dots. We observed an increase in triplet quantum yield with corresponding decrease in fluorescence quantum yield of conjugates compared to Pc complexes alone. Z-scan technique was employed to experimentally test the nonlinear optical response of complexes and nanoconjugates in solution at laser excitation wavelength of 532 nm with 7 ns pulse. Nonlinear absorption coefficient, third-order optical susceptibility and optical limiting threshold of the materials were obtained from the Z-scan data. The nonlinear absorption parameters improved in the presence of CdTe/ZnSe/ZnO, with 1 and 1-CdTe/ZnSe/ZnO, giving the best results due to the presence of electron donating substituents.

- Description: A novel tetraphenylethylene (TPE) architecture that makes use of a disilane bridge was developed to successfully prepare organic optical power limiting (OPL) materials with high transparency. The σ-bridged TPE derivatives exhibit enhanced solid-state emission efficacies up to 4 times that of TPE. Due to the unique σ-electron delocalization, the incorporated Si–Si bridge gives rise to intense nonlinear optics (NLO) properties. These compounds show favorable optical transparency in the visible region, since the σ–π interaction has a relatively minor effect on the absorption properties of TPE. The poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBC) thin films of disilane-bridged compounds exhibit significant reverse saturable absorbance (RSA) responses during Z-scan measurements at 532 nm. In contrast, negligible OPL properties were observed in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution and when a PBC thin film was prepared with TPE. The disilane-bridged molecular system represents a novel and easily prepared architecture for the construction of solid-state optical limiting materials.

- Description: The rare-earth quintuple-decker phthalocyaninato chelates (3a and 3b) were synthesized from their parent rare-earth double-decker phthalocyaninato precursors (2b and 2a). After extensive structural elucidation, these complexes were subjected to various spectroscopic techniques to investigate their electronic behavior. It was found that complexes 3a and 3b existed as the oxidized forms. When investigating the optical limiting properties, all these complexes were found to exhibit reverse saturable absorption, with complex 2a showing a more enhanced open-aperture Z-Scan signature than complex 2b. Interestingly, complexes 3a and 3b (in solution) exhibited better open-aperture Z-Scan signatures than their parent rare-earth double-decker phthalocyaninato precursors (2b and 2a). However, thin films fabricated from these complexes did not show an improvement in the optical limiting properties when compared to 2a, 3a, 3b except for that which was prepared from 2b. This study shows the importance of extensive π-electron system in phthalocyaninato complexes for optical limiting applications.

- Description: Asymmetric (A3B) Zn(II) phthalocyanines containing dimethoxy phenoxy as the dominant substituent and (phenoxy) propanoic acid (1), (phenoxy) acetic acid (2), and (phenoxy) acrylic acid (3) as the other substituents were synthesized and linked to silver tungstate nanoparticles (Ag2WO4 NPs). The photocatalytic activities of the prepared complexes 1–3 and nanoconjugates were evaluated for the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible-light irradiation and for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) activity against S. aureus. The results revealed that complex 3 had the best photocatalytic and PACT performance compared to 1 and 2, corresponding to the higher singlet oxygen quantum yield of the former in dimethyl sulfoxide. The photodegradation reaction was also examined using EPR and a mechanism for generation of singlet oxygen under visible light was confirmed. Photoinactivation of S. aureus improved in the presence of TC, when the two are applied together.

- Description: Bifunctional nanocomposites based on zinc phthalocyanines and glutathione capped CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles (GSH-CoFe2O4 MNPs) are applied in a binary system wherein simultaneous photooxidation of methyl orange (MO) and photoreduction of Cr (VI) are conducted. The photoactivity of two zinc Pcs with different functional moieties are compared based on their interactions with GSH-CoFe2O4 MNPs. Conjugation of the Pcs to the GSH-CoFe2O4 MNPs not only enhanced their singlet oxygen production but also their photocatalytic activity in both photooxidation and photoreduction experiments. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, the Pc-MNP conjugates reported herein were found to exhibit superparamagnetic behaviour, giving the advantage of easy separation using an external magnetic field post application, an attractive attribute for heterogeneous catalysis. The catalysts reported herein are therefore good candidates as catalysts for real life water purification analyses as they facilitate the treatment of both organic and inorganic water pollutants.
