- Description: In this work, tetrakis(5-hexyn-oxy)Fe(II) phthalocyanine was synthesised in order to perform a click reaction between the terminal alkyne groups and an azide group on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. An azide group was formed on the electrode surface following electrografting using 4-azidobenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate by electrochemical reduction. The Cu(I) catalyzed alkyne-azide Huisgen cycloaddition reaction was then employed in order to react the terminal alkyne groups on the phthalocyanine with the azide groups on the GCE surface. The modified electrode was employed to catalyse the oxidation of hydrazine. The electrode showed good electrocatalytic ability towards the detection of hydrazine with a sensitivity of 15.38 µA mM−1 and a limit of detection of 1.09 µM.

- Description: Reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS), reduced boron doped graphene oxide nanosheets (rBDGONS) and reduced nitrogen doped graphene oxide nanosheets (rNDGONS) and their composites with cobalt tetra aminophenoxy phthalocyanine nanoparticles (CoTAPhPcNP) were employed towards the detection of hydrogen peroxide. The nanomaterials were characterized by absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry. rNDGONS showed excellent electrooxidation and electroreduction of hydrogen peroxide supported by superior surface coverage values. The inclusion of nanosized Pc significantly lowered the reduction overpotential. CoTAPhPcNP-rNDGONS-GCE gave a sensitivity of 39.30 mA/M, catalytic rate constant of 1 × 103 M−1 s−1 and a detection limit of 8.2 nM. An adsorption equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy of 1.26 × 103 M−1 and −17.69 kJ mol−1 respectively were observed.

- Description: A polymer of tetra(4)-(4,6-diaminopyrimidin-2-ylthio) phthalocyaninatocobalt(II) (CoPyPc) has been deposited over a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) platform and its electrocatalytic properties investigated side by side with polymerized cobalt tetraamino phthalocyanine (CoTAPc). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies were used for characterization of the prepared polymers of cobalt phthalocyanine derivatives and their nanocomposites. L-Cysteine was used as a test analyte for the electrocatalytic activity of the nanocomposites of polymerized cobalt phthalocyanines and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The electrocatalytic activity of both polymerized cobalt phthalocyanines was found to be superior when polymerization was done on top of MWCNTs compared to bare glassy carbon electrode. A higher sensitivity for L-cysteine detection was obtained on CoTAPc compared to CoPyPc.

- Description: Tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl-thio) phthalocyaninato] gallium(III)chloride (1) and tetrakis[(benzo[d]thiazol-2ylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato] gallium(III)chloride (2) were successfully electrodeposited onto aluminium for corrosion retardation in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. The aim of this study was to compare the corrosion resistance of electrodeposited metallated phthalocyanines. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and polarization confirmed the aluminium corrosion inhibition potentials of complexes 1 and 2. EIS and polarization techniques showed that complex 2 performed better than complex 1, with values from EIS measurements of 82% for 1 and 86% for 2 in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. The importance of electrodeposition in industries and a dearth of research on the use of electrodeposited metallated phthalocyanines necessitated this study, and results show that coatings formed by electrodeposition of 1 and 2 onto aluminium reduced its susceptibility to corrosion attack.

- Description: In this study, a 5-diazonium isophthalic acid was synthesized and electrografted onto glassy carbon (GCE) and screen-printed carbon (SPCE) electrodes. SPCE was used to demonstrate fabrication of a miniature device and to compare with conventional glassy carbon electrodes. The isophthalic acid (IPA) electrografted thin film was used for the immobilization of anti-methotrexate antibody (Ab) using carbodiimide activation chemistry to form antibody modified surfaces, GCE-IPA-Ab and SPCE-IPA-Ab. The GCE -IPA-Ab and SPCE-IPA-Ab surfaces were used as capacitive biosensors for the detection of methotrexate (MTX) in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) using capacitive electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS data was analyzed using singular value decomposition (SVD). Principal component regression analysis gave R2 values of 0.99 for both the GCE-IPA-Ab and SPCE-IPA-Ab surfaces. The detection limit from the calibration curve of the GCE-IPA-Ab and SPCE-IPA-Ab was calculated to be 7.0 pmol.L−1 and 5.5 pmol.L−1, respectively.

- Description: A novel low-symmetry A3B-type phthalocyanine annelated with a pyrazino[2,3-f]phenanthroline ring system and substituted with six solubilizing diisopropylphenoxy-groups (1) was synthesized by metalfree DBU-promoted cross-condensation of diiminoisoindolines derived from 4,5- bis(diisopropylphenoxy)phthalonitrile and pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline-2,3-dicarbonitrile. The use of these particular precursors affords A3B phthalocyanine in 15% yield, while cross-condensation of the corresponding dinitriles yields only trace amounts of the target compound. Comparative studies of the A3B-type phthalocyanine and its symmetrical octa(diisopropylphenoxy)-substituted counterpart 2 reveal striking differences in the Q band regions of their UVevisible absorption (UVeVis) spectra, which could be readily rationalized through a comparison with calculated TD-DFT spectra. Since 1 can have two NH-tautomers with equivalent and non-equivalent NH-groups, and DFT calculations predict that the former tautomer is only 2.3 kcal/mol more stable than the latter one, a comprehensive analysis of 13C NMR spectra was carried out through the application of 1 He13C HMBC and HSQC techniques. It demonstrated that only the tautomer with equivalent NH-groups is present in solution.

- Description: We described the synthesis of nickel octadecylphthalocyanine (NiPc(C10H21)8), followed by its adsorption on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) to form SWCNT-NiPc(C10H21)8 conjugates. SWCNT-NiPc(C10H21)8 was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and for the electrooxidation of 4-chlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol. The SWCNT and NiPc(C10H21)8 have a synergistic effect on each other in terms of improving electrocatalysis for the detection of chlorophenols. The stability of the electrode improved in the presence of NiPc(C10H21)8 or NiPc compared to the bare GCE. The presence of SWCNT improves the electrocatalytic behaviour of NiPc(C10H21)8 but not of unsubstituted NiPc. All modified electrodes showed improved stability towards the detection of 2,4-dichlorophenol. The best stability for 4-CP detection was observed in the presence of SWCNT for NiPc(C10H21)8.

- Description: Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) modified with cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoPc-GCE) and cobalt(II) octabutoxyphthalocyanine (CoOBuPc-GCE) were employed for the electrochemical analysis of ortho-, meta-, and para-cresols. The oxidation potential of p-cresol was shifted towards less positive values to a larger extent, when compared to m- and o-cresols, on CoOBuPc-GCE. However, the GCE was less stable when modified with CoOBuPc than with CoPc. This is explained using the possible differences in the orientation of the adsorbed phthalocyanine molecules on the electrode. Bulk electrolysis of p-cresol at anodic potentials (1.0 V versus Ag|AgCl) on carbon electrodes modified with CoPc resulted in the formation of radicals which coupled to form trimeric products. On unmodified carbon electrodes, coupling of the radicals resulted in dimeric products following bulk electrolysis. The products formed following bulk electrolysis were characterized by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.

- Description: We report on the electrooxidation of hydrazine catalyzed by single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) functionalized with cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) which shows that the presence of the single-walled carbon nanotubes enhances the catalytic activity of the CoPc itself without any change in the reaction mechanism. A synergistic effect, in terms of reactivity when the new nanocomposite material was adsorbed on the GC electrode, was observed. The obtained hybrid electrodes were tested under hydrodynamic conditions, showing two different oxidation processes, which suggest the presence of two different types of active sites on the electrode surface catalyzing the reaction. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses in the presence of [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− as a redox probe revealed that the GC/SWCNT + CoPc showed much lower electron-resistance (Ret) confirming the synergistic effect of the composite mentioned above. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showed the clear differences in surface roughness for each film, confirming the different compositions of the hybrid electrodes used in this study.

- Description: We report for the first time on the electroassisted biomimetic activation of molecular oxygen by a newly prepared electropolymerized polypyrrole-manganese phthalocyanine film. The prepared films and their intervention in the electroassisted catalytic reduction of molecular oxygen were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectrophotometry on optically transparent electrodes. The obtained results demonstrate the probable existence of the key-steps responsible for the suggested formation of the highly reactive manganese oxo intermediate.

- Description: The potential utility of electrospun polystyrene (PS) nanofibers embedded with 2,6-diiodo-8-phenyl-1,7-dimethyl-3,5-di-2-thienylvinyleneBODIPY for the photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes is investigated. A comparison of the singlet oxygen quantum yield of the ππ-extended BODIPY dye in solution and in the PS nanofibers demonstrates that its photosensitizer properties are retained when it is embedded in the solid phase. The photocatalytic degradation properties of the PS nanofibers for Methyl Orange and Orange G were determined by using a Thorlabs 625 nm light emitting diode. The rate of photodegradation increases with the Orange G and Methyl Orange concentration and follows pseudo-first order kinetics at pH 6.7.

- Description: The heterogeneous photocatalytic activity of Zn(II) phthalocyanine-gold nanoparticle conjugates immobilized on electrospun polystyrene fibers was investigated using 4-chlorophenol and Orange G as model pollutants. The phthalocyanine-gold nanoparticle conjugates were synthesized via a ligand exchange reaction and characterized using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The interaction between the gold nanoparticles and phthalocyanines did not restrict the formation of excited singlet states, triplet states and hence the formation of singlet oxygen required for photocatalysis. The conjugates showed significantly higher singlet oxygen quantum yields and enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to the phthalocyanines. It was concluded that hybrid electrospun fibers provide great potential as active photocatalysts for oxidizing organic pollutants using singlet oxygen as an oxidant.

- Description: The photophysical and photochemical properties of tetraaminophthalocyanine complexes of lutetium and zinc covalently linked to polyacrylic acid were studied alongside those of unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine within the same polymeric fiber matrix. All three phthalocyanines within the solid fiber matrices showed photoactivity by the generation of singlet oxygen as was observed in solution. The fluorescence behaviors of the composite fibers equally parallel those in solution. For the unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine composite, the fiber showed fluorescence quenching on interaction with gaseous nitrogen dioxide similar to that in DMF and, thus could be a promising nanofabric material in developing optoelectronic devices that are responsive to the gas.

- Description: The self-assembly of oppositely charged phthalocyanines, fabricated using quaternized 2,(3)-tetra(oxo-pyridine) phthalocyaninato chloroindium (III) (QInPyPc) as the positively charge molecule and a series of tetrasulfonate phthalocyanine (MTSPc), M = 2H, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni as negatively charged molecules are reported. The self-assembly results in the formation of heteroaggregates. The metallated sulfonated phthalocyanines form nanorod and nanoleaf shaped structures as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The UV–Vis spectra showed blue shifted Q bands, suggesting that these structures were in a face-to-face arrangement. The Raman spectra of the heteroaggregates showed shifting compared to the spectra of the precursors.

- Description: A lipophilic and electron-rich metallophthalocyanine Mn(III)Cl(α,α′-n-OC5H11)8Pc has been synthesized and characterized. A series of electrochemical experiments demonstrate that the Mn(III)Cl(α,α′-n-OC5H11)8Pc complex can be used as a catalyst for highly efficient carbon-chloride bond cleavage of environmental toxic hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) through electrochemical catalysis, and that the increased catalytic efficiency is related to the enantiomeric carbon-chloride σ-bond of HCHs.

- Description: Two or eight zinc triphenyl porphyrins were conjugated with Zn-phthalocyanine or H2-phthalocyanine to form ZnPc–(ZnTPP)2, ZnPc–(ZnTPP)8, H2Pc–(ZnTPP)2 and H2Pc–(ZnTPP)8. Energy transfers from the porphyrin moiety to phthalocyanine part were quantitatively studied with the modality of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). By measuring the fluorescence increment from the phthalocyanine moiety and the decrease from porphyrin part under selective excitation at the B band of the porphyrin part in those conjugated compounds and their equimolar mixture of compositions, energy transfer efficiencies were estimated to be 90% for H2Pc–(ZnTPP)8 and ZnPc–(ZnTPP)8, and 60%, 30% for ZnPc–(ZnTPP)2 and H2Pc–(ZnTPP)2, respectively.

- Description: Amphiphilic poly(oxanorbornene)s are promising synthetic polymers that mimic the structural properties and antimicrobial functions of naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides. Here, poly(oxanorbornene)s bearing pendant zinc(II) phthalocyanine and triphenyl(ethyl) phosphonium functionalities are synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Fluorescence, singlet oxygen and triplet quantum yields of polymers are measured in dimethyl sulfoxide and aqueous medium. The singlet oxygen quantum yields of copolymers with the highest triphenyl and triethyl phosphonium content are found to be 0.29 and 0.41, respectively. Then, antimicrobial activities of polymers against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are investigated under both dark and light conditions. Synergistic effect of zinc(II) phthalocyanine and phosphonium-containing poly(oxanorbornene) is observed that the conjugate possessing the most triphenyl phosphonium side chains has the highest activity under light against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains after 80 min irradiation, reducing the survival of E. coli or S. aureus by 99.9999%. Hemolytic concentrations of the copolymers are found between 8 and 512 µg mL−1. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proves that the bacteria membrane deforms after contacting with the biocidal polymer.

- Description: This work reports on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the therapeutic activities of new triphenyl-phosphonium-labelled phthalocyanines (Pcs), the 2,9,16,23-tetrakis(N-(N-butyl-4-triphenyl-phosphonium)- pyridine-4-yloxy) Zn(II) Pc (3) and 2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(N-(N-butyl-4-triphenyl-phosphonium)-morpholino) Zn(II) Pc (4) upon exposure to light, ultrasound and the combination of light and ultrasound. Two types of ROS were detected: the singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals. For light irradiations, only the 1O2 was detected. An increase in the ROS generation was observed for samples treated with the combination of light and ultrasound compared to the light and ultrasound mono-treatments. The in vitro anticancer activity through photodynamic (PDT) and sonodynamic (SDT) therapy for the Pcs were also determined and compared to the photo-sonodynamic combination therapy (PSDT). The two cancer cell lines used for the in vitro studies included the Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) breast cancer and Henrietta Lacks (HeLa) cervical cancer cell lines. The SDT treatments showed improved therapeutic efficacy on the cancer cells for both the Pcs compared to PDT. PSDT showed better therapeutic efficacy compared to both the PDT and SDT mono-treatments.

- Description: This work presents photophysical and nonlinear optical properties of a novel Cd 2,3-[octakis{4-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyanine}] (CdOtBPPc) and compare them with those of Pb 2,3-[octakis{4-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyanine}] (PbOtBPPc). For both the CdOtBPPc and PbOtBPPc, third order imaginary susceptibility and second order hyperpolarizability values were found to be within the limit set for good optical limiters. The Pcs were embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBC) as thin films. The optical limiting values of the Pcs once embedded in film were found to be greatly improved and the limiting fluence of each film was well below the maximum threshold. Both PbOtBPPc and CdOtBPPc showed better optical limiting when embedded in PBC compared to PMMA. CdOtBPPc shows better nonlinear optical behavior than PbOtBPPc in solution and as thin films, even though the former is aggregated in solution.
