- Description: COVID-19 has created a new world to conduct business and few industries were fortunate enough to continue to operate as essential services throughout the pandemic. The South African Citrus Industry was one of these industries. During this pandemic, certain amenities were regarded as dangerous and potentially a contributor to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Alcohol was deemed one of these contributors. During the lockdown regulations implemented in March of 2020, the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry noticed certain interesting developments concerning labour and productivity. Initial review of the effects of alcohol and substance abuse on the productivity of citrus workers, revealed limited research into the broader South African Citrus Industry, with more focus on the Western Cape and related wine farms. The aim of this research study is to identify the impact of alcohol and substance abuse on productivity within the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry. Specifically focusing on absenteeism, workers injuries on duty and workplace incidents pertaining to disciplinary processes. The research further aims to add a monetary value to the implication of these events on the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry and the possible management strategies involved to remediate the potential affects thereof. This study uses the phenomenological and case study research approaches focusing on the workplace of the researcher within the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry. Using qualitative content analysis during the interview process, the themes and findings were evaluated alongside the research questions and was found to be in agreement with the views flowing from the research data. The analysis further revealed that Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry is in need of adequate management strategies due to the seasonal nature of the industry to improve labourer job satisfaction and in turn productivity and efficiency. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Business and Economic science, 2022

Representations of trauma by three women writers from the global south
- Authors: Pabel, Annemarie Luise
- Date: 2020-04

- Description: This study examines modalities of psychological trauma in selected works by three women writers from the global South: the Scottish-Sierra Leonean writer Aminatta Forna, the ChileanAmerican author Isabel Allende and Anuradha Roy from India. It aims to examine textual manifestations of complex and prolonged experiences of trauma and the ways in which literary forms facilitate such representations. Specifically, I am interested in multi-layered and interrelated forms of trauma which exceed the conventional, event-based conceptualization of trauma as an “overwhelming experience of sudden or catastrophic events” (Caruth 1996:11). 1 Such experiences include war, exile, extensive childhood sexual abuse, maternal bereavement and familial disintegration. I have selected three texts from each author’s body of literary work: Forna’s memoir The Devil that Danced on the Water: a Daughter’s Quest (2003) and her novels The Memory of Love (2010) and Happiness (2010), Allende’s memoirs Paula (1994), My Invented Country (2004) and Portrait in Sepia (2000) and Roy’s novels An Atlas of Impossible Longing (2008), Sleeping on Jupiter (2015) and All the Lives We Never Lived (2018). The study’s focus on women writers from different contexts in the global South is motivated by an imbalance in critical attention and validation extreme forms of suffering receive globally. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Language, Media and Communication, 2020

- Description: Accessibility to healthcare refers to the availability, or the provision of healthcare-byhealthcare professionals and stakeholders and individuals' ability to obtain care and treatment. It affects overall physical, social, and mental health; disease and disability prevention; detection and treatment of health conditions; standard of living; preventable death; and life expectancy, and it is crucial to the performance of health care systems around the world. If healthcare services are available and are in sufficient supply, people will be able to seek health care, and a population will have access to services. The leading cause of death globally is Tuberculosis (TB) and South Africa is amongst the top 5 countries most affected by TB. This is aggravated by high HIV/AIDS statistics. Children belowthe age of 4, between the ages of 4- 15, and women and men of working ages are highly affected by TB and it is the primary cause of death in these groups in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District. This study used study tools like Spatial Modelling, Geographic Information Systems and software like ArcGIS 10.5, TerrSet IDRISI 18.30, and secondary data from the North West Departmentof Health (Tier.net &DHIS) and also TB patients’ home addresses to investigate the accessibility of TB treatment in Ngaka Modiri Molema, in order to spatially visualize the distribution of a communicable disease like TB and public healthcare facilities in the Ngaka Modiri Molema (NMM) District and suggest optimum sites for hospital facilities. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 2022

The geochemistry and petrology of the Karoo andesites and associated basalts of the north-eastern Cape Province
- Authors: Rumble, Keith Christopher
- Date: 1979 , 2013-02-11
- Subjects: Basalt , South Africa , Cape of Good Hope , Geochemistry , Petrology , Andesite
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , M.Sc
- Identifier: vital:4902 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1001562
- Description: New geochemical data consisting of major and 15 trace element analyses are presented for 41 rocks from three andesitic and associated basaltic rock occurrences in the North Eastern Cape Province. These include the Pronksberg, Belmore and Roodehoek localities. Field evidence suggests that the three andesites were emplaced during the early stages of Karoo volcanicity. Geochemical variations within the Pronksberg and Roodehoek andesite are small, manifesting the undifferentiated nature of the magmas. Variations within the Belmore andesite are interpreted as representing fractionation of orthopyroxene, accompanied by only minor plagioclase fractionation. Differences in trace element concentrations and inter-element ratios between the andesites and associated basalts of the Pronksberg and Belmore volcanic suites precludes the possibility of the two rock types being genetically related. Geochemical differences constrain the possibility of the three andesites being cogenetic. Magmatic processes resulting in their formation are, however, thought to be similar. The differences in chemistry between the Pronksberg Basalt (High K Type) and Pronksberg Basalt (Drumbo Type) are interpreted as representing the combined influence of weathering, the presence of amygdales and the within-flow variations of alkali elements on the Pronksberg Basalt (High K Type). Similarities in petrography and chemistry justifies a correlation of the Pronksberg Basalt (Drumbo Type) with the Drumbo Basalt Member in the Barkly East area. Data for the Drumbo Basalt (This study) in the Barkly East area confirms and complements previously presented data. Normative chemistry and strontium isotope data indicate a process involving crustal assimilation or melting of crustal rocks as being the most likely explanation for the genesis of the Karoo andesites , KMBT_363 , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

- Description: In many South Africa’s areas, citizen’s frustration with poor or slow service delivery has resulted in a surge of service delivery protests. Some of these service delivery protests are violent in nature, resulting in the damage of public and private property. Therefore, it is imperative to scrutinize service delivery protests. The South African constitution states that municipalities have the responsibility to make sure that all citizens are provided with services to satisfy their basic needs. These services include water supply, sewage collection and disposal electricity, gas supply health services, roads, storm water drainage, street lighting, municipal parks and recreation. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Governmental and Social Sciences, 2021

- Description: Traditional Afrikaner culture has often been associated with conservative beliefs, giving patriarchal figures such as the husband and father superior status. Although South Africa has undergone social progression, large numbers in Afrikaner communities still live according to old, patriarchal norms. My perceptions of Afrikaner masculinity, informed by my cultural background, enforce patriarchy's functioning in some Afrikaner homes, allowing the development of rigid expectations of a male's self-expression. These mind-sets of what masculinity is do not align with my values, beliefs, and the visual presentation of my identity. With the application of autoethnographic inquiry in this practice-based study, I was able to analyse and interpret the nuanced discrimination against the performance of my male identity in an Afrikaner cultural context. I implemented autoethnographic and practice-based methods to respond to and challenge outdated and conservative views regarding the prevalence of Afrikaner masculine ideals and their negative implications. The contribution of the research practice is FYN BOI, a fictive persona constructed and performed by me. He represents a liberated facet of my identity whose reaction is rejection against the Afrikaner cultural opinions of me, and in turn, is fuelled by the criticism to provoke further and challenge these views. The conceptual garments created are considered his wardrobe, which he uses in his self-expression online. With this unconventional approach to a fashion study, disseminating the research practice online instead of a physical exhibition allows for the study to be accessed to audiences beyond academia's domain. This undertaking intends to contribute to the existing discourse of masculinity and prejudice against individuals' self-expression of their identity. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Visual and Performing Arts, 2021
