Freedom is a time-bound value whose meaning keeps changing as time goes by, and our understanding of freedom before 1994 cannot be the same as today. With close reference to the selected life writings of South African born-frees, this study examines ideas of freedom as expressed in these texts written from the perspectives of ordinary young black people in post-apartheid South Africa. It unpacks the youth’s rejection of the tag ‘born-free’ by bringing out the difficulties of their upbringing in poverty and inequality. This work argues that poverty, inequality, unemployment, and dilapidated infrastructure in public schools are still very much a feature of post-apartheid South Africa, and that the government is yet to fully transform the lives of ordinary black people who much as they try to do so themselves, are still faced with structural inequalities, physical and symbolic violence. - Description: The syntheses and characterization of novel octacationic and hexadecacationic Pcs is reported. With the aim of enhancing singlet oxygen generation efficiencies and hence antimicrobial activities, these Pcs (including their neutral counterpart) are conjugated to Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). The obtained results show that the conjugate composed of the neutral Pc has a higher loading of Pcs as well as a greater singlet oxygen quantum yield enhancement (in the presence of AgNPs) in DMSO. The antimicrobial efficiencies of the Pcs and their conjugates were evaluated and compared on S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans. The cationic Pcs possess better activity than the neutral Pc against all the microorganisms with the hexadecacationic Pc being the best. This work therefore demonstrates that increase in the number of cationic charges on the reported Pcs results in enhanced antimicrobial activities, which is maintained even when conjugated to Ag nanoparticles. The high activity and lack of selectivity of the cationic Pcs when conjugated to Ag NPs against different microorganisms make them good candidates for real life antimicrobial treatments.

This research study asks whether or not rates of human altruistic behaviour expressed by individual recreational fishers in interpersonal contexts at the Somme River, Amiens mirror those rates of altruism expressed in collective contexts concerning local fisheries resources. In a natural resources context, altruism manifests as a willingness by fishers to incur personal cost for common-pool resource benefit. Accordingly, it is understood that altruistic behaviour reflected collectively expresses itself as cooperation. The research study takes place in Northern France with the stated objectives to: 1) observe individual fishers’ altruistic propensities in interpersonal contexts involving other fishers, 2) observe individual rates of altruistic behaviour in collective contexts involving common fisheries resources and compare with those expressed interpersonally, and 3) investigate whether or not a local (informal) management system existed in the town of Amiens to better understand if informal tenure of water space influences altruistic behaviour or not. The research design consists of two components, one quantitative and one qualitative. The former employs two economic games; a Dictators Games (DG) and a Public Good Game (PGG) in service of the first and second research objectives, and the latter employs cognitive mapping and free-listing exercises in service of the third. Here economic games stand as proxies for real-world situations involving individual (DG) and collective (PGG) decision-making whereas the exercises seek to uncover local ecological knowledge (LEK). The results found that while individual recreational fishers demonstrated lower rates of interpersonal altruism overall, in a collective setting involving local fisheries resources the rate was higher, implying a greater willingness to incur personal cost. Ecological knowledge was high among experienced fishers, yet no knowledge pertaining to parallel management and or informal rules of exclusion or resource subtraction were observed, suggesting an informal management system did not exist. Abstract Translation of children’s literature needs an artist who not only aims at producing the source language message in the target language, but will produce it in an appropriate manner and language to the target audience. In this case, the audience is children. The Skopos theory maintains that the translator needs to ensure that they fulfil the translation aim and the expectations of the target reader. This can only happen by using various strategies suggested by this and other functional equivalence theories. The researcher has used the Skopos theory to critically analyse children’s texts translated from English into isiXhosa. In the critique, the researcher noticed some errors in the translations, which may end up discouraging the child reader from reading such texts. This article explains the errors found in the texts and how they could be averted. The findings were that there are errors that happen because the translator is faithful to the source language, while there are others that are caused by nonconformity to the target language conventions. Some of these errors are so common in isiXhosa that it is possible that they are no longer considered errors by the translators. One of the recommendations is for the translator to reread the translation before they forward it to the editor and proofreader.

- Description: The more conventional route to synthesizing asymmetric push-pull phthalocyanines (Pcs) involves pairing electron-donating substituents with electron-withdrawing groups in either an A3B or AB3 manner. In this work, a push-pull system fashioned from a substituent bearing different functional groups was created. Symmetric and asymmetric cobalt and manganese Pcs in which acetaminophen was the dominant substituent were synthesized where the asymmetric analogues bore an alkyne-terminated substituent. These complexes were applied as sensors towards the electro-oxidation of nitrite. In addition to comparing the asymmetric Pcs to the symmetric counterparts, an assessment on the different central metals as well as the method of electrode modification was made. From the studies performed, the results showed that the manganese complexes are generally better suited (more so when clicked on to the electrode) in the electrocatalysis of nitrite with a limit of detection and a catalytic rate values of 2.15 μM and 6.91 × 106 s−1 M−1 being recorded for the asymmetric MnPc.

- Description: The more conventional route to synthesizing asymmetric push-pull phthalocyanines (Pcs) involves pairing electron-donating substituents with electron-withdrawing groups in either an A3B or AB3 manner. In this work, a push-pull system fashioned from a substituent bearing different functional groups was created. Symmetric and asymmetric cobalt and manganese Pcs in which acetaminophen was the dominant substituent were synthesized where the asymmetric analogues bore an alkyne-terminated substituent. These complexes were applied as sensors towards the electro-oxidation of nitrite. In addition to comparing the asymmetric Pcs to the symmetric counterparts, an assessment on the different central metals as well as the method of electrode modification was made. From the studies performed, the results showed that the manganese complexes are generally better suited (more so when clicked on to the electrode) in the electrocatalysis of nitrite with a limit of detection and a catalytic rate values of 2.15 μM and 6.91 × 106 s−1 M−1 being recorded for the asymmetric MnPc.

The parasite responsible for this disease belong to the Plasmodium genus with Plasmodium falciparum causing the most severe cases of the disease in humans. The most widely available anti-malarials were designed to specifically target the pathogenic blood stage in humans, however, in order to completely eradicate malaria there is a need for the development of medicines that not only target the pathogenic blood stage of the parasite but also block parasite transmission and eliminate asymptomatic and cryptic hepatic forms of the parasite. Iron chelators have recently gained importance as potent antimalarials, to cause infection nearly all protozoa obtain growth essential iron from their hosts. Iron is required for the development of the parasite. Deprivation of utilizable iron by chelation is a proficient approach to arrest parasite growth and associated infection. Thiosemicarbazones are known iron chelating agents by bonding through the sulfur and azomethine nitrogen atoms. This study is aimed at the identification of thiosemicarbazone based derivatives as possible antimalarial agents. Due to their iron chelation abilities there has been increasing interest in the investigation of thiosemicarbazones as possible antimalarials. During the course of this project, several thiosemicarbazone derivatives were synthesized and their structure confirmed using routine analytical techniques (NMR, FTIR, and HRMS). The synthesized compounds were evaluated in vitro against the chloroquine sensitive strain (3D7) of P. falciparum for antimarial activity. The compounds were also evaluated agsinst Hela cells for overt cytotoxicity. The compounds generally showed poor antimalarial activity. One compound (LKN11) was identified to possess intrinsic and moderate antimalarial activity of 6.6 μM. The compounds were generally not cytotoxic against Hela cell at concentrations of up to 20 μM, with only compound LKN10 showing modest cytotoxic activity of 9.5 μM. The studied photosensitizers show considerable ability to generate singlet oxygen and the quaternized molecules 2a and 3a are potential photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) agents with log10 colony forming units >9 for E. coli and S. aureus planktonic cells. The quaternized derivatives are found to have higher ability to significantly suppress the biofilms of both S. aureus and E. coli in vitro. Therefore, this demonstrates that they are potentially suitable photosensitive agents for PACT use. The TD-B3LYP/LanL2DZ calculations were performed to evaluate the singlet excitation energies of quaternized and non-quaternized porphyrins in vacuo. Our study shows excellent agreement between time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) excited energies and experimental S1 > S0 excitation energies. The small deviation observed between the calculated and experimental spectra arises from the solvent effect. The excitation energies observed in these UV-visible spectra mostly originated from electron promotion between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) for the less intense band and the HOMO−1 for the most intense band of the ground states to the lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the excited states.

- Description: The white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) (hereafter rhino) is under threat of becoming extinct due to continued poaching for its horns. In South Africa and elsewhere in Africa private landowners have, over the last few decades, contributed to the conservation of various species, including rhinos, even in areas where they have not occurred historically (i.e., where they are extralimital). Unfortunately, very few studies have investigated the conservation contribution of extralimital white rhinos on private reserves to the overall meta-population and/or their reproductive performance. The first aim of my study was therefore to determine whether or not the white rhinos introduced to a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape Province in 1992 have been successful from a reproductive perspective. I calculated inter-calving intervals, age at first calving, conception period, sex ratio, fecundity and fertility rates for white rhinos over this 28-year period. The average annual population growth rate for the rhinos was 10%, which is higher than the recommended 5% by the Rhino Management Group. Trends in density-dependent parameters such as age at first calving and inter-calving intervals also indicated that my study population is still well below carrying capacity for white rhinos and is contributing positively to white rhino conservation in South Africa. The second aim of my study was to investigate home range size and vegetation preferences of white rhinos. Home ranges were mostly larger for all age groups compared to rhinos in their native range. Previously cultivated lands (dominated by several grass species) were preferred by all rhino age groups. The rehabilitation of these previous agricultural-based pastures has likely contributed to the successful introduction of the white rhino as an extralimital megaherbivore in the Eastern Cape. Reported outcomes of infections with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are poor. Commonly used antibiotics are generally inactive against CRE. Therefore, timely detection of CRE is of paramount importance. This study aimed to investigate the resistance genes responsible for CRE in Mthatha and to identify risk factors. Methods and materials: Study design – Prospective cohort study. Study period – 23 April to 27 September 2019. Setting – Eastern Cape province, SA. Study population – All adult and paediatric CRE patients. CRE case definition according to CDC 2018. ID and AST-bioMérieux Vitek 2 system. Detection of the blaOXA-48, blaKPC, blaNDM, and blaVIM by the RESIST-4 OKNV assay (Coris). Patients were interviewed to determine risk factors associated with CRE. Results: Forty-four non-duplicate CRE patients were identified during the study period from microbiology lab at NMAH. Enterobacteriaceae species: K. pneumoniae 22 (61.4%), E. cloacae 10 (22.7%), E. coli 2 (4.5%) and K. oxytoca, P. rettgeri and M. morganii 1 each (4.3%). Adult patient 29 (65.9%0 and paediatric 15 (34.1%). Race: all black patients except one white. CRE genes-blaOXA-48 22 (50%), blaNDM 8 (18.2%), two isolates (4.5%) with both blaOXA and blaNDM. We did not find any blaKPC and blaVIM in our setting and 12 (27.2%) isolates were negative for all OKNV. Outcomes: Demised 18 (40.9%), still admitted in the ward 1 (2.3%), discharged home on basis of clinical grounds 22 (50%) and 3 (6.8%) were transferred back to the district hospitals. HAI in 27 (61.4%) with VAP 8, HABSI 8, CAUTI 5, SSI 3 and CLABSI in 3. Risk factors for CRE acquisition were antibiotic exposure 25 (58.7%), ICU stay 7 (15.9%), received medical care in last 6 months 35 (79.6%) and none travelled outside RSA. HIV positive – 19 (43.2%). Conclusion: In out setting our CRE mortality rate is 40.9%, common CRE genotypes are blaOXA-48 and blaNDM. K. pneumoniae is the most common CRE-producing Enterobacteriaceae and antibiotic exposure is an important risk factor in Mthatha and surrounding areas.

- Description: Working in academe is characterized by high work demands, long and late working hours and balancing multiple roles. This often leaves academic staff (interchangeably referred to as ‘academics’ and ‘staff’) with limited time to prioritize adequate rest and sleep. While sufficient sleep is important for general well-being and work performance, it may be important for academics given the cognitive and interactive nature of their work. However, limited research has characterized sleep behaviours and sleep quality in academic staff globally and specifically in South Africa (SA). Further, research shows that academics from different academic ranks and genders differ in their work experiences but less is known about whether these factors affect their sleep and lifestyle factors. Over and above the demands of academic work, the current study was conducted during COVID-19, which saw unprecedented change in workloads for academic staff due to online teaching and learning. Additionally, the pandemic has been associated with poorer sleep quality and lifestyle behaviours in the general population, but very few studies have explored this in the context of academics. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the sleep quality, work and lifestyle factors among academics from a university in the Eastern Cape province of SA and determine the effects of gender and academic rank on these measures. Additionally, the study aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 on sleep and work-related factors of this group. This study adopted a cross-sectional design and made use of an online questionnaire that was distributed to all academics employed at the institution via email. The data collection occurred over an 8-week testing period between August and September of 2020. The questionnaire explored sociodemographic, work and lifestyle characteristics, while the characteristics of sleep and sleep quality were explored with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Additionally, an open-ended section was included to determine the impact of COVID-19-related changes on sleep and work. The questionnaire responses were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics and the open-ended questions were analyzed with thematic analyses. A total of 84 respondents completed the questionnaire. On average, sleep quality was poor (global score of 7.09 ± 3.8), the reported sleep duration was short (6.41 ± 1.06 hrs) and the group was classified as overweight according to median BMI (26.67 [23.8-2 29.45] kg/m2). Over a third (35.71%) of academic staff reported not meeting physical activity guidelines and reported using screens one hour prior to bed every night during the week (76.19%) and the weekend (67.88%). Staff also worked long total weekly work hours (54.25 ± 11). Female academics had a poorer sleep quality (p = 0.035), spent a longer time in bed (p = 0.04), experienced more bad dreams (p = <0.01), had their last serving of alcohol earlier (p = 0.04) and worked less weekday (p = 0.04) and less total weekly (p = 0.02) hours compared to male academics. Professorship-level academics were significantly older than junior- and senior-level academics (p = <0.01) while senior-level academics had a poorer PSQI compared to professorship-level academics (p = 0.03). The thematic analysis showed that home environment, neighbourhood noise, work and mental health were the main emerging factors that disturbed sleep. The thematic analysis showed that, in relation to the impact of COVID19, sleep schedules changed and sleep duration and sleep quality improved or got worse. Respondents reported their work hours increasing, work schedules becoming less routine while working from home, dealing with the challenges of working online and experiencing worry, stress and anxiety due to the pandemic. The study highlights that, in the context of lockdown and having to work and teach online from home, academics reported poor quality sleep and short sleep duration. Further, on average, the sample reported working extensive hours and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours. The sleep health, nature of work and overall lifestyles of academic staff deserves more research attention, given the importance of their work and the impact that inadequate sleep could have on academics’ health and work performance. Sleep quality was worse for females and mid-career academics, suggesting that their sleep quality may be at greater risk than other sub-groups. However, the reasons for these differences need to be explored in future studies. This review spans the period 2011-2020, a timespan globally characterised by increased awareness of the impacts of invasive Prosopis populations, and recognition of the need for improved management. Concerted international collaboration has resulted in enhanced clarity on phylogenetic relationships within the Leguminosae and the phylogenetic placement of Prosopis. These advances have improved the framework for interpreting the host range of potential agents and for evaluating risk. At the outset of the biocontrol programme, in the 1980s, only agents that consumed mature seeds were considered. The intention was to reduce the invasiveness of Prosopis while simultaneously retaining it as a usable resource. The programme was subsequently expanded to investigate agents that prevent pod set or maturation of seed. More recently, potential agents that damage the vegetative growth of the plants have been included in response to recognition in South Africa, that there is no other route to successful management of Prosopis. There is a wealth of largely unexplored potential in this regard.

- Description: This is an autoethnographic and performance-based study on the correlation between indigenous and modern cultures. It discusses the influence of globalisation, modernity, and of the Chopi people migrations to Maputo, the main city of Mozambique and to gold and platinum mines in South Africa, on timbila music. Timbila is both the name of a musical instrument (xylophone) and of a cultural manifestation, practiced by the Chopi people from Mozambique. It is one of the most documented music and dance cultures in Mozambique and was proclaimed as a masterpiece of the oral and immaterial heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2005. The oldest references by Father Andre Fernandes date from the 16th century. However, the most well-known timbila sources were written and recorded by Hugh Tracey, the founder of the International Library of African Music (ILAM), from 1940s. All these sources were based on traditional timbila music. None refers to contemporary timbila music, which is a mixture of timbila with Western musical instruments. The research is thus based on both historical and is new research to understand the role of the phenomena mentioned above to the reinterpretation of timbila music over the time. Performance based and autoethnography methods were selected because of my role as a pedagogue of the music and culture of timbila, allowing me to express my knowledge on this cultural expression. Literature review and interviews are the two procedures of data collecting employed to get an understanding of the research methods; the phenomena of modernity, globalisation and of the Chopis migration for the searching of better living conditions in Maputo and South Africa; and the approaches of different scholars who have written about timbila. The use of these methods and methodologies, allowed me to conclude that, Chopis migrations, modernity and globalisation has allowed the emergence of a modern version of timbila music; internationalisation and dissemination of this musical expression; and contributes to the extinction of traditional timbila orchestras in Zavala. However, the state of the country’s readiness for the enabling technologies of the 4IR is in question. Objective: This article sought to investigate South Africa’s state of readiness for the technologies that enable the 4IR. The article proposed a framework which can be used to measure the country’s level of preparedness and implement the necessary processes to move the country into the 4IR era. Method: A detailed analysis of literature was carried out on the current and futuristic technologies employed by developed countries as they moved towards the 4IR. The fit – viability and the task – technology theories were employed to propose a framework to government for measuring its state of readiness for the 4IR in South Africa. Results: Based on findings from the literature study, the article proposed the 4IR readiness framework for government to measure and subsequently plans its response to the advent of 4IR technologies in the country. Conclusion: The framework revealed that South Africa has low technological capability, plummeting economic complexity and a fall in digital technological readiness. There is also a dearth of skilled workforce and technological infrastructure. It was recommended that government should focus on building and strengthening the resilience of both public and private institutions, investment in relevant 4IR education, infrastructural improvement, and promulgation and enforcement of legal framework to ensure security and privacy of data. Our results suggest that the in the case of conjugation of zinc Pc to N,S-GQDs, photodynamic inactivation increased with the 100 % reduction percentage.

Of special interest seems to be the multifaceted character of that interrelationship. It is generally agreed that artistic expression is influenced by political power and that the two mutually inform and shape each other. This article examines the themes of power, powerlessness, and protest as they affect political governance in Cameroon, Central Africa, and as they are reflected in Cameroonian popular music. It further shows how popular songs are used to examine fundamental issues of national concern and to criticise the political leadership. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate how popular music can open a window of understanding into the current political process in Cameroon with a view to drawing implications for positive change. Written against the background of new historicism and postcolonial theories, the article is built on the assumption that popular music is a vibrant and dynamic form of oral literature which is shaped by social, economic, and political forces in present-day Cameroon. As a result, popular music has the potential to play a role in influencing a society’s perception and sense of direction. The article concludes by recommending that if the issues of power and marginality in Cameroon are to be addressed more successfully, and if the politically fraught conditions are to be ameliorated, then Cameroonians must be prepared to undergo a radical change of mentality. It further shows how popular songs are used to examine fundamental issues of national concern and to criticise the political leadership. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate how popular music can open a window of understanding into the current political process in Cameroon with a view to drawing implications for positive change. Written against the background of new historicism and postcolonial theories, the article is built on the assumption that popular music is a vibrant and dynamic form of oral literature which is shaped by social, economic, and political forces in present-day Cameroon. As a result, popular music has the potential to play a role in influencing a society’s perception and sense of direction. The article concludes by recommending that if the issues of power and marginality in Cameroon are to be addressed more successfully, and if the politically fraught conditions are to be ameliorated, then Cameroonians must be prepared to undergo a radical change of mentality.
