“Womxn like me are made”: politics and poetics in Claudia Rankine’s Citizen

- Description: This thesis utilises an interdisciplinary approach to understand the political significance of the experimental poetics used by Claudia Rankine in Citizen: An American Lyric and Koleka Putuma in Collective Amnesia. Rankine and Putuma offer contemporary reflections on what it means to occupy marginalised spaces in society. These artists experiment with formal and conventional aspects of literature to explore and create new definitions of what it means to be Black in society. Their works and techniques allow for thinking outside of dominant ideologies of race and posit alternative Black identities that are not found within canonical theory on Blackness. This project reflects on existing theories of Black subjectivity as evident in Frantz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks and Aimé Césaire’s Notebook on the Return to My Native Land. While these theorists did not reject the role of Black women in Western civilisation, they should be read as a moment in a series of counter-discourse to the Black Other rather than the finite canon of Black subjectivity. The emergence of Rankine and Putuma’s experimental poetics works to disrupt the conflation of the Black subject with the Black heteronormative male. Using Michelle M. Wright’s Physics of Blackness as its primary theoretical framework, this project advocates alternative and disruptive readings of Blackness that potentially shift Blackness away from its conflation with nationalism, masculinity and heteronormativity. This thesis uses a dialogical approach between political theory and literature which allows for Citizen and Collective Amnesia to be read as acts of resistance to epistemological erasure and as articulations of the politics relevant to the poets’ lived experiences. Both the United States and South Africa have a history of institutionalised racial segregation, which allows Rankine and Putuma to be read in relation to one another. Where the Civil Rights movement and the anti-apartheid struggle were both foregrounded as male-lead liberation movements contemporary social movements including #blacklivesmatter and #feesmustfall have initiated a return to the androcentric philosophies of Malcom X and Steve Biko, for example. As such Rankine and Putuma’s literature and art marks a reclamation of female empowerment and visibility in the face of a political rhetoric that continues to be masculine and nationalist in nature. In the absence of a space where Black female and queer bodies are adequately recognised, the poetry they write creates a space of self-representation and recognition.

A critical investigation of leadership in a Technical, Vocational Education and Training college in the Eastern Cape

- Description: Far-reaching reforms of the TVET college system – including a merger and frequent revisioning of the colleges’ role in the educational landscape of South Africa – have focused renewed attention on this sector. The fact that the sector has been plagued by poor performance – even to the extent that several colleges have been placed under administration – suggests problems at the level of leadership. This study sought to explore key role-players’ understanding of the leadership and management challenges faced by a TVET college and, by examining responses to these challenges, develop a sense of what leadership means in the sector. The study drew on three leadership theories – distributed leadership, transactional leadership as depicted in political models of management, and critical leadership – to help make sense of the findings. A qualitative case study design was used to explore key respondents’ views and lived experiences. The respondents were the principal, two deputy principals, a council member, three campus managers and a programme head. Interviews, questionnaires and document analysis were the chief data collection tools. The study found that critical leadership was the dominant approach at the college. This was revealed in the college leadership’s awareness of broader societal needs and its own role in operating in a socially just manner. College leadership also revealed signs of rejecting the status quo and opposing state control and bureaucracy, in favour of reactionary initiatives. There was limited evidence of distributed and transactional leadership. In fact, ‘leadership’ as such, seemed not to be part of the college discourse, suggesting that the concept and habit of leadership was not broadly discussed, shared and promoted. This sense was strengthened by the fact that at the time of the study, the college was headed by a charismatic and visionary leader. Indeed, the problem at the college seemed to be the Department of Higher Education and Training, which has failed the college in a number of ways.

- Description: The Zambezi area in north-western Zambia is underlain by Neoproterozoic Katanga Supergroup and older, Archean to Mesoproterozoic Basement Supergroup rocks. The area lies within the Domes Region, which is a structural domain of the Lufilian Arc. The stratigraphic succession within Zambezi area is dominated by the Grand Conglomerate Formation (GC) and Mwashia Group which are the most extensive units, and the less abundant Lower and Upper Roan Groups of the Katanga Supergroup. They wrap around the domal Basement Supergroup units. The mineral assemblage of the Mwashia and the GC schists commonly contains garnet, anthophyllite and biotite. GC rocks show remnants of primary structures such as clasts and sedimentary features. Anthophyllite, garnet and biotite are the dominant Mg-Fe rich metamorphic minerals. However, these are iron rich for each mineral phase and has been attributed to iron rich protoliths. The earliest recognised deformation episode (D1) formed NE-SW S1 foliations within GC which is consistent with the regional structural trend in the western Lufilian Arc. S1 was later affected by D2 that generated downward facing F2 folds and S2 foliations. The other associated feature to D2 is garnet that grew as the result of pro-grade metamorphism. The D3 deformation fabric is not developed and did not affect much of the structural geometry of the Zambezi area. The peak assemblages of the Basement Supergroup and the Katanga Supergroup formed at mid-amphibolite facies conditions of 590 °C and 630 °C at an average pressure of 4.0 kbar. The Basement Supergroup has undergone retrograde metamorphism to greenschist facies condition indicated by presence of chlorite and also determined by biotite-anorthite isopleth in THERIAK DOMINO. At the eastern part of Zambezi area, the Katanga Supergroup rocks were retrogressed in the upper greenschist facies at about ~470°C and ~4.0 kbar due to isobaric cooling.

- Description: In this thesis we analysed Westerbork observations of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster at 1380 MHz. Observations consist of two different pointings, covering a total of ∼ 0.5 square degrees, one including the known mini halo and the source 3C 84, the other centred on the source 3C 83.1 B. We obtained images with 83 μJy beam⁻¹ and 240 μJy beam⁻¹ noise rms for the two pointings respectively. We achieved a 60000 : 1 dynamic range in the image containing the bright 3C 84 source. We imaged the mini halo surrounding 3C 84 at high sensitivity, measuring its diameter to be ∼140 kpc and its power 4 x 10²⁴ W Hz⁻¹. Its morphology agrees quite well with that observed at 240 MHz (e.g. Gendron-Marsolais et al., 2017). We measured the flux density of 3C 84 to be 20.5 ± 0.4 Jy at the 2007 epoch, consistent with a factor of ∼2 increase since the 1960s.

Development of graphene materials and phthalocyanines for application in dye-sensitized solar cells

- Description: Two sets of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated. In the first set, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) were fabricated by incorporating graphene materials as catalysts at the counter electrode. Platinum was also used as a catalyst for comparative purposes. Different phthalocyanines: hydroxyl indium tetracarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (1), chloro indium octacarboxy phthalocyanine (2) and dibenzoic acid silicon phthalocyanine (3) were used as dyes. Complex 3 gave the highest power conversion efficiency (η) of 3.19% when using nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (NrGONS) as a catalyst at the counter electrode, and TiO2 containing rGONS at the anode. The value obtained is close to 3.8% obtained when using Pt catalyst instead of NrGONS at the cathode, thus confirming that NrGONS is a promising candidate to replace the more expensive Pt. The study also shows that placing rGONS on both the anode and cathode improves efficiency. In the second set, DSSCs were fabricated by using 2(3,5-biscarboxyphenoxy), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tri(tertbutyl) phthalocyaninato Cu (4) and Zn (5) complexes as dyes on the ITO-TiO2 photoanodes containing reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS) or nitrogen-doped rGONS (NrGONS). The evaluation of the assembled DSSCs revealed that using ITO-TiO2-NrGONS-CuPc (4) photoanode had the highest fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (ɳ) of 69 % and 4.36 % respectively. These results show that the asymmetrical phthalocyanine complexes (4) and (5) showed significant improvement on the performance of the DSSC compared to previous work on symmetrical carboxylated phthalocyanines with ɳ = 3.19%.

- Description: The present trend in the pharmaceutical industry is towards adapting continuous flow processing with the main driving force behind this being the need to reduce environmental and economic costs. Continuous flow systems have proven to produce better quality products at lower costs, time and energy. As a result, this technique has diversified and expanded to provide novel, and practical solutions to not only organic synthesis but also renewable fuels and material science. The focus of this research work was to exploit continuous flow systems, to develop a continuous flow process that is energy and time effective, using commercial micro reactors to synthesize 5-formyl-2,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid, a key intermediate towards the synthesis of sunitinib, an anti-cancer drug. In this thesis, a successful study on the individual translation of a 5 step batch synthesis of 5- formyl-2,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid into optimised continuous flow syntheses is demonstrated. A comprehensive literature review and background on cancer, and an introduction to pyrrole rings, their role in disease treatments in addition to a brief introduction to continuous flow technology with its advantages, and comparison to classical batch methods are provided in the first chapter. Chapter two is detailing the experimental procedures utilised for both batch and continuous flow syntheses. The continuous flow synthesis of the four intermediates towards the target compound in this work proved to be far superior compared to their batch syntheses; excellent improvements in reaction yields and selectivity in addition to tremendously shorter reaction times were observed. This is expounded in chapter three with detailed discussions of the results attained during the continuous flow optimisation of each step within the scope of this research, are provided. The concluding remarks, the impact of this study and future work are elucidated in chapter four.

Influence of Tamarix species on soil physicochemical properties and mapping its distribution and density using GIS in Western Cape, South Africa

- Description: Tamarix ramosissima invasion is unarguably one of the worst ecological disasters in South Africa and is classified under category 1b by the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 2014 (NEM: BA). The exotic Tamarix species was introduced in South Africa during the early 1900s as an ornamental or phytoremediating plant. This study was conducted to assess Tamarix distribution and evaluate its impact on soil physicochemical properties in two sites at Leeu River and Olifant River in Western Cape, South Africa. Samples were collected from Leeu River (which consists both the exotic and native Tamarix species) and Olifant River (only exotic Tamarix species). Three transects were laid from the water point outwards, with exotic Tamarix invading the river bank (first transect), the control on the open land (second transect) and the native Tamarix at the far end of the study site (third transect) in Leeu River. In Olifant, transects were laid according to the degree of invasion, low Tamarix density transect was referred to as T1, the medium as T2 and the high density as T3. Soil samples from each transect were taken from three points, at three soil depths (0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm) during winter and summer. Soil physiochemical properties such as soil pH, electro-conductivity (EC), total nitrogen (TN), total carbon (TC), soil organic carbon (SOC), sodium (Na+ ), potassium (K+ ), Calcium (Ca2+), Magnesium (Mg2+), bulk density, soil texture and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) were determined. Soil chemicals properties including EC, Na+ , SAR, K+ and Mg2+ were found significantly higher under the native and the exotic Tamarix species when compared to Tamarix free soils. In general, salinity of surface soils (0–10 cm) was greater than those in the deeper soils with 5.05 mS/cm and 4.73 mS/cm observed under exotic and native Tamarix species, respectively. High levels of EC, K+ , Ca2+, Na+ , SAR, TN, TC and SOC were observed under T3, followed by T2 with the lowest being recorded in T1 at 0-10 cm. Unlike the soil EC, the effect of Tamarix density on soil pH at 0-10 cm soil profile was not significant. Alterations of soil physicochemical properties were more pronounced under the high Tamarix density as compared to the low invasion. Increased in distance from the river was related to a higher density of the invasive species and also topography had a major role in the change of species density. An increase in Tamarix density, results in high leaf litter which in turn results in salinity and soil nutrient at 0-10 cm. Soil salinity was dramatically increased under Tamarix species. Tamarix species are capable of altering the soil properties making it conducive for their growth.

- Description: Tamarix ramosissima invasion is unarguably one of the worst ecological disasters in South Africa and is classified under category 1b by the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 2014 (NEM: BA). The exotic Tamarix species was introduced in South Africa during the early 1900s as an ornamental or phytoremediating plant. This study was conducted to assess Tamarix distribution and evaluate its impact on soil physicochemical properties in two sites at Leeu River and Olifant River in Western Cape, South Africa. Samples were collected from Leeu River (which consists both the exotic and native Tamarix species) and Olifant River (only exotic Tamarix species). Three transects were laid from the water point outwards, with exotic Tamarix invading the river bank (first transect), the control on the open land (second transect) and the native Tamarix at the far end of the study site (third transect) in Leeu River. Alternative pine species/hybrids for the Cape timber growing regions of South Africa

- Description: Pinus radiata has been the preferred commercial sawtimber species for the Cape forestry region for many years. Since the introduction of Fusarium circinatum, and the susceptibility of P. radiata to this disease, the sustainable production of this pine species for the Cape has been negatively impacted due to poor survival in the nursery and in field plantings. For this reason, a number of additional pine species and hybrids have been established in the Cape region of South Africa since 2006 to identify taxa that would perform as well as or better than P. radiata. Three research trials were implemented on contrasting sites that contained eight common species/hybrids treatments that included P. elliottii, P. elliottii x P. caribaea, P. radiata, P. patula x P. greggii var. australis, P. patula x P. oocarpa, P. patula x P. tecunumanii (HE), P. patula x P. tecunumanii (LE) and P. tecunumanii (HE) x P. oocarpa were established at Witelsbos, Kruisfontein and Garcia across diverse soil types, drainage and climate conditions in the Cape. Survival, growth data and tree morphology (forking, foxtails, broken tops and stem form) were assessed at five years of age and individual tree volume was calculated. Five year results indicate that on the waterlogged site at Witelsbos P. elliottii and its hybrid with P. caribaea was best in terms of productivity, at the dry site of Garcia, P. taeda and P. elliottii demonstrated promise, and at Kruisfontein, the most fertile site, P. elliottii x P. caribaea, P. patula x P. tecunumanii (LE) and P. maximinoi were found to be promising alternatives to P. radiata. Wood properties were assessed at Kruisfontein at six-years of age. Basic density and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) were found to be significantly different for the various species/hybrids. Pinus patula x P. tecunumanii (LE), P. patula x P. greggii (S), P. maximinoi and P. patula x P. tecunumanii (HE) were all significantly better than P. radiata, which would suggest that these taxa would have similar or superior wood strength over P. radiata, the preferred sawtimber species for the Cape region. Only P. tecunumanii (HE) x P. oocarpa had a higher basic density than P. radiata, but not significantly different. Species that had similar basic density were P. patula x P. greggii (S), P. taeda and P. tecunumanii (LE) x P. caribaea. Although P. elliottii x P. caribaea had the highest volume at Witelsbos and Kruisfontein, the timber qualities were the worst, suggesting that some breeding is needed to improve this hybrid to be an acceptable sawtimber species. From this study, several potential alternative species/hybrids have been identified that are tolerant to the F. circinatum pathogen and have acceptable growth and wood properties, compared to P. radiata.

The relationship between export diversification, export concentration and economic growth

This study examined the role of export diversification and export concentration on economic growth in the top ten trading countries in Africa and top ten trading countries in the world. The study used annual time series data for the period covering 1995 to 2014 and employed a PMG (Pooled Mean Group) Model to determine the effects of export concentration and export diversification and possible factors that affect it on economic growth. The estimation results attest to a positive effect of export diversification and a negative effect of export concentration on economic growth in the top ten trading countries in the world. However, for the top ten trading countries in Africa, the results show that export diversification is negatively related to economic growth, while export concentration positively affects economic growth. It is recommended that governments in Africa countries should promote export diversification together with government expenditure, and pursue policies that will attract foreign direct investment into growth–enhancing productive sectors of their economies

- Description: The focus of this study centered on investigating the perceptions and opinions surrounding the eruption of strike action and its effectiveness during a collective bargaining process. The case study employed was the 2018 municipal strike in Port Elizabeth, organised by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU). A Marxist theoretical framework was chosen for this study. It argues that strike action is a means through which workers communicate their dissatisfaction or enforce particular demands, with trade unions playing a protagonist’s role. Strike action, generally, is caused by a plethora of reasons ranging from disciplinary issues and conditions and hours of work, to be mention a few. However, the major force behind strike eruption is the wage agenda, as workers are always striving to get better wages while employers, on the other hand, attempt to reduce them so as to increase profits. South Africa has had its fair share of municipal strike action ever since the apartheid period, the early stages of democracy up to the contemporary times of the 21st century with various strategies, successes and losses being experienced. Democracy in South Africa also saw some developments in the labour sphere in relation to statutes surrounding strike action. The LRA and the Constitution of South Africa inform the right to strike and offer guidelines as well as consequences that steer strike action in a direction that does not jeopardize the workers, employers and the general public. The research found that workers do understand what strike action is, its causes and its various implications. Furthermore, it was discovered that this worker tool has been successful in putting pressure on the negotiation process as well as luring employers back to the negotiation table, for example. However, it was also uncovered that there are present, factors that hampered the impact of strike action during the bargaining procedure in focus. These are namely, the political institutionalization of trade unions, ill-equipped union leaders, a reluctance to implement strike agreements by employers, the use of violence by municipal workers during the strike, to mention but a few. Therefore, when looking at the strike in question, the effectiveness of strike action during the collective bargaining process was found to be easily contestable.

Elucidation of the effect of cannabinoids on ER stress to determine their molecular mechanism of action in breast cancer cells

Normal cells generally do not experience ER stress; however, stressful conditions in the tumour micro-environment facilitates chronic ER stress and UPR activation, which plays a pivotal role in tumour survival. Exacerbation of pre-existing ER stress can trigger cancer cell death, with a minimal effect on normal cells. Currently, no high-throughput method exists to detect and quantify ER stress in cell lines. This study showed that Thioflavin T, a fluorescent dye that binds to misfolded protein aggregates, can be used for the high-throughput detection of ER stress, and provides several advantages over currently used methods. Current literature suggests that cannabinoid treatment may induce cancer cell death via ER stress, however little is known about the mechanism of induction. This study proposed a mechanism that occurs via the influx of Ca2+ via the vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1), and subsequent ROS production, which affects protein folding. ER stress was induced using various cannabinoids and measured using Thioflavin T and western blot analysis. The effect of cannabinoid treatment on ROS production and the intracellular Ca2+ concentration was measured. Cannabidiol (CBD) was the most potent ER stress inducer, significantly increasing Ca2+ and ROS accumulation; however, the level of accumulated Ca2+ across cell lines varied, which may be due to the differences in the TRPV1 expression and localization. Concomitant treatment of CBD with an antioxidant significantly increased cell viability and decreased ER stress induction in the MCF7 cell line. Concomitant treatment with a TRPV1 antagonist increased viability in this cell line. In conclusion, the results suggested that CBD may induce ER stress via Ca2+ influx through the TRPV1 receptor, thereby elevating intracellular ROS levels and disrupting protein folding.

- Description: Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella, caused by the intracellular pathogen Salmonella enterica, has emerged as a major cause of bloodstream infections. It remains a neglected infection responsible for many deaths in Africa, as it fails to receive the level of support that is given to most better known infections. There are currently no vaccines against invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella. First-line antibiotics have been used for treatment, however, the rise in the resistance of the bacteria against these antibiotics has made treatment of invasive salmonellosis into a clinical problem. Therefore, the discovery of new compounds for the development of antibiotic drugs is required. Central metabolic pathways can be a useful source for identifying drug targets and among these is the non-mevalonate pathway, one of the pathways used for the biosynthesis of isoprenoid precursors. The second step of the non-mevalonate pathway involves the NADPH-dependent reduction of 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) into 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP). 1-Deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) reductoisomerase plays a vital role in the catalysis of this reaction and requires NADPH and divalent metal cations as co-factors for its activity. In this investigation recombinant DOXP reductoisomerase from Salmonella enterica, Plasmodium falciparum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis were biochemically characterized as potential targets for developing drugs that could be used as treatment of the disease. The expression and nickel-chelate affinity purification of S. enterica DOXP reductoisomerase in a fully functional native state was successfully achieved. However, the expression and purification of P. falciparum DXR and M. tuberculosis DXR was unsuccessful due to the formation of insoluble inclusion bodies. Although alternative purification strategies were explored, including dialysis and slow dilution, these proteins remained insoluble, making their functional analysis not possible. An NADPH-dependent enzyme assay was used to determine the activity of S. enterica DXR. This assay monitors the reduction of DOXP to MEP by measuring the absorbance at 340 nm, which reflects the concentration of NADPH. An alternative assay, resazurin reduction, which monitors the NADPH-dependent reduction of resazurin to resorufin, was explored for detecting enzyme activity. The recombinant S. enterica DOXP reductoisomerase had a specific activity of 0.126 ± 0.0014 μmol/min/mg protein and a Km and Vmax of 881 μM and 0.249 μmol/min/mg respectively. FR900098, a derivative of fosmidomycin, is a well-known inhibitor of DXR, however, the sensitivity of S. enterica DXR towards FR900098 has not yet been reported. The NADPH dependent enzyme and resazurin reduction assays were used to determine whether FR900098 has enzyme inhibitory effects against S. enterica DXR. Upon confirming that FR900098 is able to inhibit S. enterica DXR, FR900098 was used as a control compound in the screening of novel compounds. The S. enterica DXR enzyme was screened for inhibition by the collection of compounds from the Pathogen Box. Compounds that exhibited the desired inhibitory activity, referred to as ‘hits’ were selected for further investigation. These hits were confirmed using the NADPH-dependent enzyme assay, resulting in the identification of two different DXR inhibitor compounds, MMV002816, also known as diethylcarbamazine, and MMV228911. - Description: Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella, caused by the intracellular pathogen Salmonella enterica, has emerged as a major cause of bloodstream infections. It remains a neglected infection responsible for many deaths in Africa, as it fails to receive the level of support that is given to most better known infections. There are currently no vaccines against invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella. First-line antibiotics have been used for treatment, however, the rise in the resistance of the bacteria against these antibiotics has made treatment of invasive salmonellosis into a clinical problem. Therefore, the discovery of new compounds for the development of antibiotic drugs is required. Central metabolic pathways can be a useful source for identifying drug targets and among these is the non-mevalonate pathway, one of the pathways used for the biosynthesis of isoprenoid precursors. The second step of the non-mevalonate pathway involves the NADPH-dependent reduction of 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) into 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP). 1-Deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) reductoisomerase plays a vital role in the catalysis of this reaction and requires NADPH and divalent metal cations as co-factors for its activity. In this investigation recombinant DOXP reductoisomerase from Salmonella enterica, Plasmodium falciparum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis were biochemically characterized as potential targets for developing drugs that could be used as treatment of the disease. The expression and nickel-chelate affinity purification of S. enterica DOXP reductoisomerase in a fully functional native state was successfully achieved. However, the expression and purification of P. falciparum DXR and M. tuberculosis DXR was unsuccessful due to the formation of insoluble inclusion bodies. Although alternative purification strategies were explored, including dialysis and slow dilution, these proteins remained insoluble, making their functional analysis not possible. An NADPH-dependent enzyme assay was used to determine the activity of S. enterica DXR. This assay monitors the reduction of DOXP to MEP by measuring the absorbance at 340 nm, which reflects the concentration of NADPH. An alternative assay, resazurin reduction, which monitors the NADPH-dependent reduction of resazurin to resorufin, was explored for detecting enzyme activity. The recombinant S. enterica DOXP reductoisomerase had a specific activity of 0.126 ± 0.0014 μmol/min/mg protein and a Km and Vmax of 881 μM and 0.249 μmol/min/mg respectively. FR900098, a derivative of fosmidomycin, is a well-known inhibitor of DXR, however, the sensitivity of S. enterica DXR towards FR900098 has not yet been reported. The NADPH dependent enzyme and resazurin reduction assays were used to determine whether FR900098 has enzyme inhibitory effects against S. enterica DXR. Upon confirming that FR900098 is able to inhibit S. enterica DXR, FR900098 was used as a control compound in the screening of novel compounds. The S. enterica DXR enzyme was screened for inhibition by the collection of compounds from the Pathogen Box. Compounds that exhibited the desired inhibitory activity, referred to as ‘hits’ were selected for further investigation. These hits were confirmed using the NADPH-dependent enzyme assay, resulting in the identification of two different DXR inhibitor compounds, MMV002816, also known as diethylcarbamazine, and MMV228911. In conducting this study, I am responding to the past and present separatist and identitarian categorisations of creative productions from black/African creative producers, particularly women creative producers in South Africa, creating an alternative canonisation around their selected works. Although canons have been and can be used to drive separatist and identitarian categorisations, it is my hope to elucidate a discourse around the preservations and acknowledgements of South African creative and knowledge productions through a feminist existential framework that canonises important black feminist existentialist works and thereby brings to light their intellectual contributions over and above their identities. My development of a South African feminist existentialism is an attempt to graft a more intersectional, holistic framework to introduce in the feminist and existential discourses, and to proffer a new intersectional holistic paradigm of discussing categories that do not limit creative productions. South Africa has been witnessing to a surge in wind energy developments in recent years. Although, environmental impacts often enjoy more emphasis, social impacts are equally important. Recently social sustainability was seen as an integral part of sustainable development for the future and can no longer be ignored. Wind energy is pathway towards sustainable development but can have detrimental impacts on social sustainability. On the one hand wind energy is said to impact culture, sense of places and cause unrest in a community, however, on the other hand it is said to be socially sustainable to the point where wind energy is incorporated into local culture and not to mention the employment opportunities it can create. This is particularly important for vulnerable communities found in the Karoo, where unemployment is very high. Purpose/ Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the social sustainability of a wind energy project in the Karoo by constructing a theoretical assessment model designed to produce appropriate and specific social indicators. Methodology: A literature review was undertaken to gain insights into the social sustainability of wind energy which also served as the theoretical backbone for the model and assessment parameters. The assessment model produced 10 indicators which was used as interview schedule with key stakeholders in the study area. A total of 31 qualitative interviews were conducted and produced a good data set. Findings: The results from this study show that here was no significant negative impact reported with regards to social sustainability. The wind developer is committed to the community based on the various social initiative funded by it. Although a definite positive impact and improvement in terms of social sustainability is evident in the area, there is still a long way to go as many outcomes set by the wind developer is yet to achieved.

- Description: Dystopias have frequently been explored in literature to better understand the present and imagine the effects of certain elements of society if taken to a logical extreme. In this way, dystopian fiction can act as both cautionary tales and a form of social commentary. This can be explored within the context of African dystopian fiction where power is a recurring theme, highlighting the anxiety and turbulent history several countries on the continent continue to face. To demonstrate this, I compare selected South African and Nigerian Dystopian texts. With regards to South Africa, I analyse novels by South African science fiction authors Lauren Beukes and Lily Herne, namely Moxyland (2008) and Deadlands (2011) respectively, to investigate how South Africa’s past under Apartheid shapes the segregated societies presented. Nigerian dystopian texts by Biyi Bandele-Thomas, namely The Sympathetic Undertaker And Other Dreams (1993) and The Man Who Came in from the Back of Beyond (1992), are discussed with regards to the way Nigeria’s colonial past and several military juntas have contributed to the kinds of corruption that are depicted. I argue that all four texts warn of the dangers of power, albeit in ways that pertain specifically to their countries of origin. With regards to the South African texts, readers are shown the ways in which those in power can manipulate the desire to survive to keep those they subjugate dependent and, consequently, obedient through what Judith Butler terms ‘passionate attachments’. In the case of the Nigerian dystopias, I argue that Bandele-Thomas’s texts warn of tyranny and effects of the corruption that result from misused power strategies. While the dire settings of dystopian fiction may be grim enough, on their own, to motivate change in the real world, this may not be enough to prevent the texts from becoming pessimistic and fatalistic outlooks. Hence, I seek to understand how the selected novels maintain hope and, consequently, convince readers that the depicted dystopias are ones that can be avoided. Typically, dystopian literature fosters hope by setting the narratives in the future, giving readers hope that they may take steps today to protect their societies from becoming like the damned worlds described by dystopian authors. However, the selected texts are not set in the future. Hence, I explore three literary techniques that might foster hope within the selected African dystopian texts in lieu of temporal distancing. They are, namely: identification with the protagonist, defamiliarization and cognitive estrangement.

High-intensity Interval Training utilising a standardised versus customised training programme among endurance trained male cyclists

The study was exploratory and quasi-experimental in nature and utilized a quantitative approach. A quasi-experimental, pretest-postestcontrol group study design was used. A total number of 22 participants that met the inclusion criteria were included in the study by means of purposive sampling. The participants were subdivided into an experimental group (n=11) and a control group (n=11)by means of random stratification in order to ensure performance equality between the two groups. The experimental group completed a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) block of 28 days (four weeks) with three weeks of interval-based sessions and one recovery week ending off the block. The programmeutilised the same “anaerobic” type intervals (10 x 30 seconds at 170% PPO with 4 minutes 30 seconds recovery) as the control group, performed twice per week for three consecutive weeks. The Lamberts and Lambert submaximal cycling test (LSCT) was used to determine whether a participant in the experimental group could start his HIIT session on a particular day.Participants were notallowed to start their HIIT session if twoor more of the set criteria weremet.If the participants did not qualify to participate in a HIIT session they were required to perform a low intensity training session in the same venue. Differences between the pre-and post-test showed statistically non-significant improvements (p>0.05) from pre-to post-test for both the experimental and control groups in respect of the physiological variables measured (gas exchange threshold, respiratory compensation point, maximal oxygen consumption). The experimental group did however show more positive, but statistically non-significantimprovements in peak power output. The findings of this study therefore showed that no significant within group nor between group improvements were achieved utilizing a standised versus customised HIIT training programme over the four-week study period. The findings do however suggest that the LSCT may have merit in prescribing HIIT sessions in trained athletesas suggested by the improvements of the experimental group’s peak power output.

The organisation has served this global industry for more than 25 years and is considered by many to be one of the biggest and best manufacturers of intermodal ISO tank containers in the world. - Description: Many inequalities still exist among those living in both rural and urban areas despite the abolishment of apartheid in 1994. Addressing these inequalities has been deemed important and require urgent attention, especially career education among rural youth, as this is a social justice issue (Watson, 2010). There also appears to be a lack of qualitative research pertaining to the aspirations of rural youth. During sessions with the research team, the teachers and school governing board (SGB) members, it was indicated that the youth in the community seem to be without hope for the future and that career aspirations were lacking. Based on the background and problem identified, the main research question of this study aimed to explore how youths in a rural secondary school perceive how they might actualise their future career aspirations. This research was set within the interpretivist and critical paradigm. Qualitative data was gathered to gain an understanding of how the participants constructed meaning with regard to ways in which they might actualise their career aspirations, the challenges they faced and pathways to overcome these challenges. This study began with nine secondary school rural youths as participants but this number decreased to four as the research progressed. Four data sets were generated, namely photovoice, participant PowerPoint artefact creation, focus group interviews and PowerPoint presentations by participants to the community, learners and school. The data was generated using a qualitative thematic analysis guided by the utilisation of Creswell’s application of Tesch’s (1990) framework. Measures were employed to ensure trustworthiness, credibility, transferability and dependability (Ary, Jacobs, Razavieh & Sorensen, 2010). Both the primary and secondary researchers had access to identical files that contained all the data that was generated and stored by the primary researcher. Ethical approval to conduct the study was obtained from the ethics committee at the university and consent was obtained in writing from all relevant parties participating. This research found that the research participants had future career aspirations that included careers in the medical field, law enforcement, business, IT as well as the music industry. The participants envisaged a hopeful future for themselves, their families, their school and the community. Their aspirations focused on transcending their current lived experiences and attaining financial stability. They wished to give back to their communities and schools to ensure a better future for all. The participants aspired to be instruments of social change. The participants were aware that they would encounter various challenges along their path to actualise their dreams. The anticipated challenges included peer-pressure and negative influences, being confronted by various social ills such as violence, drugs and alcohol, abuse and gangsterism. They understood that a lack of self-belief would lead to hopelessness. The participants were concerned that if they did not succeed at school they would not be promoted to the next grade. They also indicated that parental involvement was a challenge and that they did not receive adequate support from their parents. The participants also mentioned that underperforming teachers and conflict with the SGB could derail their career aspirations. They were also concerned about their lack of financial means, as they did not have the necessary funding to gain access to a university but were aware of ways to overcome these challenges. They indicated that drawing on the spiritual domain is important to them and this included the church and their faith in God as a means to overcome their challenges. Education was also key to actualise their aspirations and the participants mentioned that being focused at school and knowing that education has the potential to open doors served as a form of motivation. They were prepared to work hard to succeed at school. It was important for their teachers to be committed, as this would assist in ensuring their success. They indicated the importance of having access to social capital through networking. This included guidance, support and mentoring, as well as using social media to inform society of their plight in order to receive encouragement and support. It was also noted that the aspirations project of which they were part, afforded the participants with transformative possibilities, as they began to critically reflect on the future. They shared their vision, hope and goals with those around them, which further motivated them to aspire to achieving their goals. The participants became selfconfident as a result of their new abilities. They were open to exploring alternative career opportunities and developed a sense of self-belief that they can realise their goals. The participants began to take a stand, as they were aware that agency begins with them. The findings revealed that the rural youth, their parents, the school as a whole, the life orientation teacher(s), the school principal, the school governing body, the community as well as the Department of Basic Education could guide them and assist rural secondary youths to actualise their aspirations.

- Description: Many inequalities still exist among those living in both rural and urban areas despite the abolishment of apartheid in 1994. Addressing these inequalities has been deemed important and require urgent attention, especially career education among rural youth, as this is a social justice issue (Watson, 2010). There also appears to be a lack of qualitative research pertaining to the aspirations of rural youth. During sessions with the research team, the teachers and school governing board (SGB) members, it was indicated that the youth in the community seem to be without hope for the future and that career aspirations were lacking. Smallholder farmers’ adaptation strategies to mitigate the effect of drought on maize production in O.R Tambo District Municipality

- Description: Drought is a normal periodical event that influences the livelihoods of millions of people around the world and it is considered one of the most devastating natural disasters in economic, social and environmental terms. South Africa is considered a semi-arid country vulnerable to water stress, particularly drought. Drought is expected to affect maize production in South Africa in the coming years. Although drought cannot be controlled, producers can adopt adaptation practices to reduce yield loss caused by drought. Maize is a staple crop in South Africa, which makes it the most important grain crop, being both the major feed grain and the staple food of the majority of the South African population. Literature has identified and presented several adaptation strategies that farmers can use however, it has not been conclusively investigated whether vulnerable smallholder farmers affected by drought are able to use or benefit from them. The study examined drought adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers and factors affecting adoption and intensity of adoption of drought mitigation strategies. This study determined smallholder farmer’s adoption of adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of drought on maize production in O.R Tambo district municipality. The study was carried in ORTDM in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. A mixed methods approach utilizing qualitative and quantitative data was employed. Both primary and secondary data sources were used for this study. The study gathered data from ORTDM in the Eastern Cape from 200 smallholder maize producers. Primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire and was complemented by secondary data on maize production, yield and area planted sourced from the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, the adaptation strategy index in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software and double hurdle model used Statistical package called STATA (version 12. Results from descriptive analysis identified separate livelihood adoptions which were, increase fertilizer, use savings, indigenous knowledge, sell livestock, off-farm income (salary) and reduction of production. The adaptation strategies adopted by maize farmers are mostly shifting planting date, reduction of maize cultivated area and intercropping. The double hurdle model was used to estimate the factors affecting the farmers’ adoption of drought mitigation strategies and factors which were found to be statistically significant were gender of the household head, level of education of the household head, household size, extension services and land ownership. The Adaptation Strategy Index was used in order to establish the relationship between adopting adaptation strategies and maize production. The farmers ranked the adaptation strategies in terms of their useful in adapting with drought and successfully alleviating decline in maize production. Shifting of planting date, reduction of maize cultivated area, planting drought resistant varieties, crop diversification and intercropping were ranked as the most useful respectively. The findings of this study have a number of policy implications since a number of farmers did nothing to adapt to the effects of drought hence supporting smallholder farmers through training on climate change adaption and adapting options is necessary. Training targeting female headed and poor farmers can have significant positive impacts for increasing the implementation of drought adaptation strategies.
