- Description: The cyclic voltammetry of [(CN)2RuIIPc]2− in acetonitrile or dichloromethane shows two oxidation couples at E12 = 0.31 and 0.85 V (vs S.C.E.) in CH2Cl2 and E12 = 0.45 and 1.15 V (vs S.C.E.) in acetonitrile. The spectroelectrochemistry of [(CN)2RuIIPc]2− in these solvents showed that oxidations occur at the phthalocyanine ligand. K2[(CN)2RuIIPc] dissolves in water at pHs greater than 5. The cyclic voltammetry of this complex showed oxidation couples at 0.32 and 0.29 V (vs S.C.E.) for aqueous solutions containing sodium sulphate (0.1M) and for buffered solutions (pH = 9), respectively. Both cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry gave evidence of electrocrystallization of the oxidation product. Chemical oxidations of [(CN)2RuIIPc]2− in water also showed phthalocyanine ligand oxidation.

- Description: A positively charged phthalocyanine (2,9,16,23-tetrakis[4-(N-methylpyridyloxy)]-phthalocyanine (ZnTPPcQ)) was non-covalently linked to carbon based nanoparticles: detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs), carbon dots (CDs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to form nanosembles of DNDs-ZnTPPcQ, GQDs-ZnTPPcQ and CDs-ZnTPPcQ, respectively. Irrespective of its small size and the least number of Pcs (41.67 μg loading per milligram of DNDs), DNDs-ZnTPPcQ gave the highest singlet oxygen quantum yield (0.62) in dimethyl sulfoxide compared to the rest of the conjugates. This resulted in superior PDT activity against MCF7 breast cancer lines, with the lowest cell viability of 28% compared to ZnTPPcQ-CDs and ZnTPPcQ-GQDs at 30.1 ± 0.02% and 31.4 ± 0.23%, respectively.

- Description: A 2,6-dibrominated 3,5-distyryl boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dye with a moderately high singlet oxygen quantum yield was encapsulated in Pluronic® F-127 micelles, and its dark cytotoxicity and photodynamic activity were investigated on the human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cell line. The BODIPY dye exhibited very low dark toxicity and a significant PDT effect when added in drug formulations consisting of 5.0% (v/v) DMSO in supplemented Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) and as Pluronic® F-127 micelle encapsulation complexes in supplemented DMEM alone. An IC50 value of 4 ± 2 μM was obtained when the BODIPY dye was encapsulated in Pluronic® F-127 micelles during in vitro photodynamic activity studies in MCF-7 cancer cells with a 660 nm light emitting diode.

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles and their antimicrobial activity alone and in the presence of low symmetry phthalocyanines. The photochemical behaviour of various low symmetry phthalocyanines in the presence of AgNPs is investigated in DMF. A slight improvement in the photochemical behaviour and antimicrobial activity was achieved in the presence of AgNPs for all the complexes. The spherically shaped AgNPs gave the highest antimicrobial activity compared to the triangular and cubic structures. The (OH)2GeMCsPc complex gave the highest antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureas, both alone and in the presence of AgNPs under illumination with light.

- Description: Melatonin, a pineal secretory product, and its precursors, tryptophan and serotonin, were examined for their metal binding affinities for both essential and toxic metals: aluminium, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and zinc. An electrochemical technique, adsorptive stripping voltammetry, showed the varying abilities of melatonin and its precursors to bind the metals in situ. The results show that the following metal complexes were formed: aluminium with melatonin, tryptophan, and serotonin; cadmium with melatonin and tryptophan; copper with melatonin and serotonin; iron(III) with melatonin and serotonin; lead with melatonin, tryptophan, and serotonin; and zinc with melatonin and tryptophan. Iron(II) showed the formation of an in situ complex with tryptophan only. These studies suggest a further role for melatonin in the reduction of free radical generation and metal detoxification, and they may explain the accumulation of aluminium in Alzheimer's disease.

- Description: Graphene quantum dots grafted with polyethyleneimine (GQDs-PEI) and Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles blend was demonstrated to be a novel biosensing nanoprobe for the rapid and highly sensitive detection of biothiols such as cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcys) and glutathione (GSH). The fluorescence emission of GQDs-PEI was quenched efficiently upon interaction with Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles. The quenched fluorescence emission of the GQDs-PEI was restored in the presence of the biothiols. The fluorimetric sensing is based on the strong affinity between the mercapto (SH) groups of the biothiols and the Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles by which the interaction between GQDs-PEI and Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles was disrupted with a consequent modulation (‘turn-on’) of the quenched GQDs-PEI emission. Thus, a new, simple, rapid and highly sensitive fluorescence nanoprobe for detecting biothiols has been developed in this work.

- Description: We report on the electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) followed by deposition of nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTSPc) film by electropolymerization (poly-NiTSPc-GCE) to form Poly-NiTSPc/AuNPs-GCE. The presence of the gold nanoparticles caused a lowering of the anodic and cathodic peak separation (ΔEp) of ferricyanide from 126 mV on poly-NiTSPc to 110 mV on poly-NiTSPc/AuNPs. The electrooxidation of nitrite improved on modified electrodes compared to GCE, with the latter giving Ep = 0.78 V and the modified electrodes gave Ep = 0.62 V or 0.61 V. Poly-NiTSPc/AuNPs-GCE had higher currents compared to poly-NiTSPc-GCE. This indicates the enhancement effect caused by the AuNPs. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometric studies also showed that poly-NiTSPc/AuNPs-GCE was a better electrocatalyst than poly-NiTSPc-GCE or AuNPs-GCE.

- Description: This work focuses on the study of the effects of the ultrasonic frequency (MHz) and power (W.cm−2) on the stability, reactive oxygen species yields and cytotoxicity activities of differently substituted ionic phthalocyanines (Pcs) in sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Four ultrasonic parameters were investigated: Par I (1 MHz: 1 W.cm−2), Par II (1 MHz: 2 W.cm−2), Par III (3 MHz: 1 W.cm−2) and Par IV (3 MHz: 2 W.cm−2). A higher degradation of the Pcs was observed with increasing power at the Par II. Two reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected in the ultrasound treated Pcs: singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals. Due to minimal degradation of most Pcs, Par I was chosen for SDT, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and photo-sonodynamic therapy (PSDT) against Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 and Henrietta Lacks cancer cell lines. PSDT generally showed improved therapeutic efficacies of the Pcs compared to the SDT and PDT mono treatments.

- Description: The syntheses and characterization studies of zwitterionic 2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(N-propane sultone-morpholino) zinc(II) (4) and 2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(2,5-dimethyl-4-(N-propane sultone-morpholinomethyl))-phenoxy zinc(II) (6) phthalocyanines are reported in this work. The photophysical properties, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and in vitro anticancer photodynamic (PDT), sonodynamic (SDT), and photo-sonodynamic combination (PSDT) therapy activities of the Pcs were studied and compared to their cationic counterparts: (2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(N-methyl-morpholino) Zn(II)Pc, 3), (2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(2,5-dimethyl-4-(N-methylmorpholine)-phenoxy) Zn(II)Pc, 5). The cationic Pcs maintained higher anticancer activity for all treatment types and had higher ROS generation compared to the zwitterionic Pcs. Singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals were generated during ultrasound and combination irradiations of the Pcs. The zwitterionic Pcs also generated carbon radicals under ultrasound and combination irradiations. The ability of the Pcs to generate ROS is essential for PDT, SDT and PSDT, thus making these Pcs potential anticancer probes for these treatment types. Furthermore, the Pcs demonstrated the ability to bind to bovine serum albumin protein.

- Description: This work reports on the fabrication and modification of electrospun polymer free silica nanofibers (SiO2 NFs) with the aim of creating heterogeneous antibacterial catalysts. The optical and photophysical properties of the obtained NFs i.e. bare SiO2, Ag-SiO2, Pc-SiO2 and Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs (Pc = phthalocyanine) were compared and reported. The singlet oxygen quantum yields of the Pc-SiO2 and Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs were also quantified and found to be 0.08 and 0.12, respectively, in water. All the modified SiO2 NFs were found to possess photoactivity against S. aureus with the most effective being the Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs due to the synergy between the Pc and Ag nanoparticles. The bare SiO2 NFs do not exhibit any antibacterial activity while the Ag-SiO2 and Pc@Ag-SiO2 NFs were found to also exhibit dark toxicity. The generated photocatalysts are attractive because they are active against bacteria and they are easily retrievable post-application. The nanocatalysts reported herein are therefore feasible candidates for real-life antibacterial applications.

- Description: Cationic Zn phthalocyanine complexes were derived by alkylation reaction of tetra-(pyridinyloxy) phthalocyanines (Pcs) at the ortho, meta, and para positions to form Zn (II) tetrakis 3-(4-(2-pyridin-1-ium-1-yl) butyl)-2-mercapto-4,5-dihydrothiazol-3-ium phthalocyanine (2), Zn (II) tetrakis 3-(4-(3-pyridin-1-ium-1-yl) butyl)-2-mercapto-4,5-dihydrothiazol-3-ium phthalocyanine (4) and Zn (II) tetrakis 3-(4-(4-pyridin-1-ium-1-yl) butyl)-2-mercapto-4,5-dihydrothiazol-3-ium phthalocyanine (6). The photophysicochemical behaviors of the Pc complexes were assessed. The meta and para-substituted complexes gave high singlet oxygen quantum yields. The cationic Pcs demonstrated good planktonic antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with the high log reduction values of 9.29 and 8.55, respectively. The cationic complexes also showed a significant decrease in the viability of in vitro biofilms after photo-antimicrobial chemotherapy at 100 µM for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli biofilms.

- Description: Herein, a novel aptasensor is developed for the electrochemical detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) on electrode surfaces modified using various combinations of a Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), an aptamer and graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as well as differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) are employed for the detection of PSA. In both analytical techniques, linear calibration curves were observed at a concentration range of 1.2–2.0 pM. The glassy carbon electrode where CoPc and GQDs are placed on the electrode when non-covalently linked followed by addition of the aptamer (GQDs-CoPc(ππ)-aptamer (sequential)) showed the best performance with a limit of detection (LoD) as low as 0.66 pM when using DPV. The detection limits were much lower than the dangerous levels reported for PSA in males tested for prostate cancer. This electrode showed selectivity for PSA in the presence of bovine serum albumin, glucose and L-cysteine. The aptasensor showed good stability, reproducibility and repeatability, deeming it a promising early detection device for prostate cancer.

- Description: The formation of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) composites with tantalum phthalocyanines (TaPc) complexes {1a and 1b (Figure 1)} is reported. The TaPc-AuNPs conjugates were characterised by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy. The AFM analyses show that conjugates of TaPc with AuNPs are more aggregated when compared to AuNPs alone. The conjugates and TaPc complexes were immobilized on a gold electrode by drop and dry method and these were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The charge transfer behaviour of AuNPs was enhanced in the presence of TaPc complexes. All the modified electrodes showed electrocatalytic oxidation of bisphenol A. The limits of detection for complexes 1a and 1b were 4.78×10−10 and 2.76×10−10 mol L−1, respectively.

- Description: This work investigates the use of manganese phthalocyanines (MnPcs) in the electrochemical detection of nitrite. These are two Schiff base derivatives: tetrakis 4-(4-thio-thiophene-2-ylmethanamino) phthalocyaninato Mn(III)Cl (2) and tetrakis 4-(3-(pyrrolidine-1-yl)propan-1-amino)phthalocyaninato Mn(III)Cl (3) and one aldehyde: tetrakis(4-formylphenoxy)phthalocyaninato Mn(III)Cl (1). The MnPc complexes were adsorbed onto the glassy carbon electrode surface using the drop-dry method and used as electrocatalysts to detect nitrite. Nitrite oxidation peak potentials obtained using cyclic voltammetry ranged between 0.70 and 0.84 V. Detection limits as low as 0.16 µM and sensitivity values as high as 276 µMmM−1 were obtained through the use of chronoamperometry. The Schiff base MnPcs 2 and 3 exhibited better nitrite detection properties (in terms of limit of detection and sensitivity) than their aldehyde precursor (1).

- Description: The ability to functionalize and modify graphene-based quantum dots has also allowed for the tuning of their activity in different applications. A comparative study is carried out in this work where a prostate specific aptamer (PSA) and cobalt phthalocyanine molecule are combined with graphene quantum dots (GQDs), nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) and graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (gCNQDs) in order to determine the effects of quantum dots type (and therefore composition) on the electrocatalytic ability of the sensor to detect the analyte of interest. For the detection of prostate-specific antigen, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is employed to determine detection limits as well as sensitivity and selectivity of the aptasensors. Results showed a good performance of all sensors fabricated with the NGQDs based aptasensor showing the best performance with a detection limit of 1.54 pM in EIS as well as negligible interference in mixed samples. This electrode was further verified in spiked human serum samples and good recovery and low detection limits were determined, putting this aptasensor in good stead as a reliable, efficient PSA aptasensor.

- Description: Aminopropyl triethoxysilane functionalized core SiO2 and core/shell ZnO/SiO2 nanoparticles (NP) were covalently linked to zinc monocarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnMCPPc, complex 1) via amide bond formation. The photophysicochemical behavior, in vitro dark viability and photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity against human breast adenocarcinoma cell line (MCF-7 cells) of the conjugates were studied. The nanoconjugates showed enhanced photophysicochemical behavior as compared to complex 1 alone. Complex 1 showed higher dark toxicity against MCF-7 cells when compared to the conjugates. In the dark, complex 1 accounted for less than 50% viable cells at 28.6 μg/mL and 57.1 μg/mL compared to the conjugates which accounted for more than 50% cell viability at these concentrations. The in vitro dark viability and PDT activity of complex 1 was reduced in the presence of these nanoparticles.

- Description: Molecular films of manganese phthalocyanine (MnPc) complexes, tetra-substituted with 2-diethylaminoethanethio at the peripheral (Mn(OAc)-β-TDEAETPc, 1) and non-peripheral (Mn(OAc)-α-TDEAETPc, 2) positions were formed on glassy carbon electrode by electropolymerization and electrodeposition respectively. Atomic force microscopy images confirmed the presence of the films and revealed significant morphological differences. The films exhibited an electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of the insecticide, bendiocarb. Hydrodynamic technique, using rotating disc electrode voltammetry, was used to investigate the kinetics of electro-oxidation of the insecticide. Morphological differences of the films significantly influenced kinetic parameters. Values of Tafel slopes, obtained from Tafel plots, suggested that catalysis of bendiocarb occurred via outer sphere mechanism.
