- Description: In South Africa, choral music has been prominent in schools, churches, and community choirs since the 19th century. However, the majority of South Africans know little of the history of indigenous choral music. This study investigates the origins of South African indigenous choral music, its canonic figures, and their contribution to this genre in promoting an African identity among the indigenous people of South Africa. Using the methodological lens of historical ethnomusicology, this thesis explores the genesis of choral music in South Africa. Choral music was introduced to the region when it was first colonised by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. Missionaries established institutions in the villages of the local people and translated the Bible and hymn books into the local languages. These actions had lasting consequences for music, and choral singing was greatly advanced. In addition, in this work early composers of South African indigenous choral music are recognised in an effort to establish a choral canon. Three definitive choral periods are recognised, namely those of the first-generation, second-generation, and post-colonial composers. Using this historical framework, this thesis investigates the social and political influence these composers had on African identity during the liberation struggles in the late colonial era and during the early apartheid period. - Description: This study seeks to interrogate the presentation of women in selected South African texts written by a male and female South African author, whose central thematic thrust is the role of women in their day-to-day struggles during the apartheid era. An in-depth analysis of the texts enables this dissertation to provide a comparative study of the representation of women in both texts. The study also examines the kinds of fictional representations that are found in the texts and their significance in the emancipation journey of women from the supremacy of apartheid and customary laws. This study is informed by African feminism, focusing on the stance of Obioma Nnaemeka and Molara Ogundipe-Leslie. African feminism is chosen as a framework for exploring the texts because it is a theory shaped by the resistance of African women against Western rule. The theory embraces debates about motherhood and the contestation about the roles of motherhood in a society. The theory ponders how motherhood is a source of empowerment, liberation and achievement in African societies. The theory affirms that women should equip themselves for effective resistance and participation in societal transformation. These two theorists are relevant because they are both committed to a critical investigation that seeks to differentiate present social conditions and their historical development. Their research examines the conceptualization of frameworks aimed at a social and cultural change grounded on the local and everyday experiences of women. The first chapter provides a broad overview of the study. This chapter highlights the significance of the study in terms of what it can contribute to scholarship on the representation of women in South African texts that reflect on the apartheid era, by analysing them through the lens of African feminism. The second chapter provides context to the critical reception of both novels, which outlines the focus of the research. This chapter also provides the theoretical framework, which provides an overview of the relevant theory on African Feminism that informs the study and highlights Nnaemeka and Ogundipe-Leslie’s concepts of ‘Nego-Feminism’ and ‘Stiwanism’. The third chapter focuses on analysing the portrayal of women in the texts, examining their interactions with one another, with men, and the subjugation they endure because of living in a patriarchal society. The fourth chapter provides a comparative study of the texts. Finally, the last chapter provides a conclusion, analysing the research findings. The study thus brings to the fore the similarities and differences in the representation of women in South African texts that were written in different decades by a male and female writer, that are nevertheless highlighting the same issues. Secondly, in exploring how women in the texts challenge the status quo, this research will hopefully expose how women are not constantly compliant and embracing marginalization as some texts present them but can be seen as having emancipative agency. - Description: The aim of the dissertation was to investigate whether the adoption of a national system of innovation has helped facilitate development in South Africa from a comparative BRICS perspective. South Africa has an expanding focus on science and technology, as per the Science and Technology White Paper (1996). There appeared to be innovation that had left out much of the citizenry. There continued to be poverty, inequality, and joblessness. The study aimed to understand how the NSI approach could be used to foster inclusive and transformative development. The study used a mixed-methods approach. The qualitative aspect of the research focused on an innovation and public policy study which assessed the various policies and initiatives implemented in each of the BRICS countries to drive innovation and foster development. The qualitative aspect of the study found that the innovation paradigm required governments to adopt a more holistic approach to public policy design and analysis. The quantitative aspect of the research focused on a trend, correlation, and regression analysis. The trend analysis revealed that China and Brazil increased their allocation of resources towards R&D compared to the other countries. Brazil is regarded as a social investment state, while China is a developmental state: this means the state plays an extraordinarily strong coordinative and financing role in the NSI. On the other hand, the correlation matrix for South Africa revealed a statistically significant positive linear association between various NSI indicators and human development. This suggested that the innovation benefits are trickling down to the general citizenry. - Description: This thesis explores the functioning of branch politics within the African National Congress (ANC) and the influence of branch politics on the organization and its structures. The ANC has many of the characteristics of a mass party. In mass parties, mass participation is supposed to be promoted through the activities of party branches. This thesis documents the weakening of the ANC’s local level structures and their political control over the organization’s decisions. ANC branches are investigated as democratic vanguards of ANC’s mass party persona, in relation to their functioning as the most basic units of the organization. The thesis reflects on branch members’ experiences in different ANC branches to understand the interplay between branch politics, political power, and patronage politics within the ANC. In South Africa, the plant was first detected in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal Province in 2008, and due to its known impact in other countries, it was listed as a Category 1a invader species under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 2004 (NEM:BA). This invasive plant has proved difficult to manage due to its varied growth forms and reproductive strategies, such as prolific seed and below ground tuber production. Due to the limitations of conventional control mechanisms, biological control is currently being considered as a potential control option. The tuber feeding weevil Listronotus frontalis LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) has been identified as a candidate biological control agent for this invasive species. The aims of this study were twofold; to firstly determine the importance of tubers to S. platyphylla populations growing in South Africa; and secondly, to determine the biology and suitability of L. frontalis, a tuber feeder, as a candidate biological control agent. Surveys of S. platyphylla populations in South Africa showed that tubers were found in all sampled sites, except for Krantzkloof Nature reserve in KwaZulu-Natal Province. The highest number of tubers was 97.75 ± 10.62 (SE) m-2 recorded at Jonkershoek in the Western Cape Province. Monthly sampling from two sites in the Eastern Cape Province, the Makana Botanical Gardens and Maden Dam showed that neither season nor water depth affected tuber production. However, the mean number of tubers as well as mass of tubers sampled, were consistently higher (F(1,179) = 20.9542, P < 0.0001) and heavier (F(1, 857) = 585.7293, P < 0.0001) at the Botanical Gardens than at Maden Dam, respectively. The study showed that tubers are an important life stage of S. platyphylla populations and may vary in size and abundance between and within sites. The tuber feeding weevil was shown to develop from egg to ovipositing adult within just over 40 days. Females were recorded to lay up to 48 eggs within a period of one week. Impact studies showed that adult feeding led to a reduction in all but one of the 11 measured plant growth and developmental measurements, including a reduction in the mean mass of the above-ground plant material (F(2,2743) = 12.05, P = 0.002) as well as a reduction in size and abundance of tubers (F(2,58.47) = 9.756, P = 0.0006) and stolons(F(14.943) = 8.7577, P = 0.003). These results are encouraging and suggest that if the insect is released in South Africa, it may prove to be a valuable biocontrol agent. - Description: Throughout the world, urbanisation is at an all-time high. It is estimated that two-thirds of the global population will be living in urban centres by 2030. The highest urban growth rates are currently found in sub -Saharan Africa, however, approximately 70% of urban residents in Sub-Saharan Africa reside in informal settlements. Such processes have resulted in reduced areas of natural space and biodiversity. While the benefits of exposure to and experiences of nature to human well-being and quality of life are increasingly being acknowledged, these links are largely understood through a western lens, where nature and culture are dichotomised. The implications of this are that the types of nature(s) that are made available in urban areas are designed to provide opportunities for urban residents to only engage in recreational and relaxation activities within such places. However, among indigenous and non-westernised communities, culture is a dynamic and holistic entity, deeply rooted in the constructions of nature. Very few studies from the global south have entered this dialogue. In response, this study, conducted amongst Xhosa speaking urban residents living in two medium-sized towns, was undertaken to explore the connections and meanings they attributed to nature(s) and how their engagement in such places contributed to their sense of well-being. This study found that strong connections and meanings to nature still exist. Many of these relate to personal experiences which are given meaning through local understandings and associations which are deeply embedded within cultural practices and rituals. Engagement and or memories of such are strongly associated with a sense of well-being often only experienced in rural areas. In such contexts, well-being is also understood as a holistic concept that is underpinned by these nature-culture connections. - Description: Throughout the world, urbanisation is at an all-time high. It is estimated that two-thirds of the global population will be living in urban centres by 2030. The highest urban growth rates are currently found in sub -Saharan Africa, however, approximately 70% of urban residents in Sub-Saharan Africa reside in informal settlements. Such processes have resulted in reduced areas of natural space and biodiversity. While the benefits of exposure to and experiences of nature to human well-being and quality of life are increasingly being acknowledged, these links are largely understood through a western lens, where nature and culture are dichotomised. The implications of this are that the types of nature(s) that are made available in urban areas are designed to provide opportunities for urban residents to only engage in recreational and relaxation activities within such places. However, among indigenous and non-westernised communities, culture is a dynamic and holistic entity, deeply rooted in the constructions of nature. Very few studies from the global south have entered this dialogue. In response, this study, conducted amongst Xhosa speaking urban residents living in two medium-sized towns, was undertaken to explore the connections and meanings they attributed to nature(s) and how their engagement in such places contributed to their sense of well-being. This study found that strong connections and meanings to nature still exist. Many of these relate to personal experiences which are given meaning through local understandings and associations which are deeply embedded within cultural practices and rituals. Engagement and or memories of such are strongly associated with a sense of well-being often only experienced in rural areas. In such contexts, well-being is also understood as a holistic concept that is underpinned by these nature-culture connections. Within an urban context, the benefits of such connections are hindered by the types of nature(s) found in these areas as well as high levels of crime and the poor management of such places. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Anthropology, 2021

- Description: In an effort to move away from Apartheid and its evils -South Africa and South Africans have committed to a shared moral project -the Rainbow Nation-Building Project (RNP); a project that confers certain moral duties and responsibilities upon its citizens, including a joint commitment to robust inclusivity, equality, and unity. Importantly, however, our environments –be they physical, social, or psychological –are such that they (actively or passively) obscure our awareness of some morally relevant facts about our society, and thereby hinder us as moral agents and therefore threaten our abilities to fulfil our moral project and commitment.What does it mean for us -a society ostensibly committed to the RNP -to be plagued by racism, sexism, queerphobia and xenophobia? What is it that contributes to our complicity regarding social practices and ideas that we would otherwise find morally objectionable? What does it say about our commitment to our publicly-exalted ideals and values (of inclusivity, diversity, reconciliation, justice, and unity) when we are unwittingly complicit in the marginalisation and social exclusion of members of our society? And how can institutions such as universities work to overcome this?In this work, I argue that the obscuring of, and failure to perceive, morally relevant facts that call on us for ethical attention and/or action -a phenomenon I refer to as ‘moral blindness’ -is responsible for at least some of our behaviours and practices that run contrary to our moral ambitions; and therefore has profound implications for us as moral agents and our ability to succeed in our moral goals. Moral blindness, then, is both an epistemic and ethical concern that enables socially unjust systems to perpetuate themselves; and is thus a threat toallmoral projects.I argue that, for South Africa, much of what can be identified as moral blindness is the direct result of the shifting and conflicting socio-cultural conditions the nation finds itself liminally caught amidst in its transition from its Apartheid past and towards its promised inclusive Rainbow Nation future. Commitment to the RNP, I argue, involves a self-transformation and habituation of certain supportive virtues on the part of South Africans to become the kinds of people who are compatible with the Rainbowist society -whom I call Rainbow Citizens. But this self-transformation itself is also a moral project, and therefore subject to the threat that moral blindness presents, and so too can be failed. The data for the social learning dialogue process was generated through an iterative analysis of dialogical social learning workshops, focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The analysis focused on the framing (Chapters 2, 3, and 5) and reframing of the AES (Chapter 6). Through dynamic engagement within the knowledge hub (contextual social learning and literature), the study surfaces a potential alternative discourse that actively includes the BSMFs as a crucial component of the commercial sector AES as the analysis shows these are largely excluded. This alternative discourse occurred through dialogical interactions with all participants via a pro-actively constituted social learning process, enriched and deepened by literature as indicated above. Main recommendations of the study are: 1. The AES must be framed to address the holistic value chain of BSMFs to help address underlying policy dualism, 2. Public Private Partnerships are needed to support BSMFs development and these should adopt a social learning approach that is reflective of complex realities 3. In this in-between space the doctoral candidate takes the role of a novice and apprentice unlearning the student/unknowing past and learning to become a professional in academia. This project utilises the borderlands theory to understand the experiences of doctoral students as they undergo the process of becoming and intellectual identity formation. Whilst ‘journey’ and other metaphors that have been used to understand doctoral student experiences capture the process of becoming as a progression through the liminal stages – proposal, literature review, context, writing, reading etc. These stages presuppose temporality of being leading to stasis/completion. I argue that such conceptualisation of doctoral studies, although useful, depict one side of the story and provide a limited, monolithic, and homogenising understanding of the spatial configurations of doctoral space and intellectual identity formation. The dominant discourses of doctoral conceived and perceived space, liminal stages and understanding of doctoral student experiences, mask the more latent and intimate liminal stages of intellectual identity formation. Drawing from borderlands theory, I firstly argue for a holistic approach to understanding the spatiality of doctorate studies. Secondly, I argue that liminality is an everyday process integral to human existence where one is always in a state of ideological transition. An important state of liminality is the awareness of ‘Self’ in perpetual motion, caught between two worlds dominated/dominator and two ideologies of oppression/resistance. If this side of liminality is not made visible, institutional spaces, such as the doctorate, privileged with the power to disseminate and position onto-epistemologies as universal can be used to reproduce and reinforce exclusionary onto-epistemologies that subsequently impact intellectual identity formation. - Description: Film adaptation has been practised since the emergence of cinema in France in the early twentieth century. Theorists have identified, however, that a detailed system of analysis of film adaptations remains lacking and that there is a dearth of detailed case studies. This study adopts the lens of intersemiotic translation and seeks to apply a system of analysis, comprised of a synthesis of three existing systems (Cattrysse, Metz, McFarlane). The semiotic transferal of five key sequences from the source text are analysed in their film adaptations. The source text, Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, an eighteenth-century epistolary novel focusing on the erotic exploits of two nobles in French high society, was chosen for its challenging nature as a film adaptation. Two film adaptations, that at first glance seem to be at the opposing extremes of film adaptation classification: ‘free’ and ‘close’; have been chosen to firstly, better understand the mechanics of the semiotic transferal process, and secondly, to identify at which points these adaptations are constituted as ‘free’ or ‘close’. Since the domain’s theorisation in the early 1930’s, the fidelity debate has remained omnipresent in the analysis of film adaptation. Even though theorists have tried to move away from the fidelity debate, it remains indispensable when comparing an adaptation with the original text and is a key point of departure when analysing the semiotic transferal between source text and screen. Through the lens of translation, theorists have come to question the binary classifications of film adaptations: ‘free’ and ‘close’. Contemporary theorists suggest that proximity to the source text operates on a continuum rather than as a fixed category. As a result of the multi-layered system of analysis used in this study, it has been concluded that the two film adaptations chosen are both ‘free’ and ‘close’ at varying points. Intersemiotic translation used in comparative film adaptations studies is therefore a useful methodological tool that allows for a more detailed and nuanced analysis and strengthens the case for using a continuum of proximity rather than fixed classifications. , Depuis l’émergence du cinéma en France au début du XXe siècle, il existe des adaptations filmiques. La présente étude vise à prendre l’optique de la traduction intersémiotique et à appliquer un système d’analyse, qui se compose d’une synthèse de trois systèmes existants (Cattrysse, Metz, McFarlane). Le transfert sémiotique sera analysé de cinq séquences clefs du texte source. Le texte source, Les Liaisons dangereuses de Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, roman épistolaire du XVIIIe siècle qui se focalise sur les conquêtes amoureuses de deux aristocrates, a été choisi pour sa nature stimulante en tant que projet d’adaptation filmique. Nous avons choisi deux adaptations, qui à première vue, semblent être aux extrêmes opposés de classements des adaptations filmiques : ‘approchant’ et ‘libre’, pour découvrir les mécanismes du processus du transfert sémiotique, et en deuxième lieu, pour identifier à quels points ces adaptations seraient ‘approchantes’ ou ‘libres’. Dès la théorisation du domaine au début des années 1930, le débat de la fidélité est resté omniprésent dans les analyses des adaptations filmiques. Comparer une adaptation filmique au texte source est fait, et reste un point de départ essentiel lorsque l’analyse du transfert sémiotique entre le texte source et l’écran s’effectue. À travers l’optique de la traduction intersémiotique, les théoriciens ont remis en question les classifications binaires des adaptations filmiques : ‘approchante’, ‘hybride’, et ‘libre’. Les théoriciens contemporains suggèrent que la proximité du texte source s’opère sur un continuum au lieu d’être précisée dans des classements fixes. Grâce au système à multiples composantes utilisé dans cette étude, il a été conclu que les deux adaptations filmiques choisies sont toutes les deux ‘approchantes’ et ‘libres’ aux points variés. - Description: Film adaptation has been practised since the emergence of cinema in France in the early twentieth century. Theorists have identified, however, that a detailed system of analysis of film adaptations remains lacking and that there is a dearth of detailed case studies. This study adopts the lens of intersemiotic translation and seeks to apply a system of analysis, comprised of a synthesis of three existing systems (Cattrysse, Metz, McFarlane). The semiotic transferal of five key sequences from the source text are analysed in their film adaptations. The source text, Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, an eighteenth-century epistolary novel focusing on the erotic exploits of two nobles in French high society, was chosen for its challenging nature as a film adaptation. Two film adaptations, that at first glance seem to be at the opposing extremes of film adaptation classification: ‘free’ and ‘close’; have been chosen to firstly, better understand the mechanics of the semiotic transferal process, and secondly, to identify at which points these adaptations are constituted as ‘free’ or ‘close’. Since the domain’s theorisation in the early 1930’s, the fidelity debate has remained omnipresent in the analysis of film adaptation. Even though theorists have tried to move away from the fidelity debate, it remains indispensable when comparing an adaptation with the original text and is a key point of departure when analysing the semiotic transferal between source text and screen. Through the lens of translation, theorists have come to question the binary classifications of film adaptations: ‘free’ and ‘close’. Contemporary theorists suggest that proximity to the source text operates on a continuum rather than as a fixed category. As a result of the multi-layered system of analysis used in this study, it has been concluded that the two film adaptations chosen are both ‘free’ and ‘close’ at varying points. Intersemiotic translation used in comparative film adaptations studies is therefore a useful methodological tool that allows for a more detailed and nuanced analysis and strengthens the case for using a continuum of proximity rather than fixed classifications. , Depuis l’émergence du cinéma en France au début du XXe siècle, il existe des adaptations filmiques. - Description: After the 2016 #FeesMustFall protest(s), higher education institutions were dramatically altered with respect to their institutional cultures; the narratives of those who were historically side-lined and marginalised took centre stage. At Rhodes University social activism was constitutive of three components; a ‘revolt’ against the fee increment; a contestation of the rape culture; and a rejection of the colonial curriculum. These concerns, in their varied articulations, made up different social and academic realities that define(d) Rhodes University and affected how individuals experienced institutional culture. According to Ndlovu (2017) while these expressed acts (in the form of protests and institutional shutdowns) of resistance against the system of higher education subsided after the fees must fall campaign, these served to centre the narratives of the marginalised. Keeping with this thinking, the argument presented in this thesis explores the experiences of black women in higher education after the call towards coordinated resistance. Using qualitative data in the form of narrative interviews, the thesis documents how the participants continued their academic and social life post-resistance. This rupture of resistance created a complex matrix of individual subjectivity where participants engaged with traditional social academic norms in new spaces of resistance; a phenomenon that enlivened the intersectionality that came to define the higher education landscape of the country. This thesis explores the stories of the participant’s as they engage(d) with what is becoming a new institution—that is the University in South Africa, with a case-in-point being Rhodes University—and to understand the power relations and intersections that define their lived experiences. This study found that the reality of existing within the confines of power—with its fluidity—meant that black women operate both within spaces of privilege and oppression simultaneously. As such, and following Vivian May’s (2015) argument, this study concludes that black women are situated and simultaneously constrained by power. Recently, high-profile campaigns, such as #MeToo and #AmINext, have garnered massive support online, attracting tens of thousands of women in diverse social and geographical spaces who have used the internet as forums for discussion and a route for activism. However, there are still parts of the world where feminism is a contentious topic, and one such place is Zambia, where the Facebook page Zambian Feminists, seeks to challenge patriarchy and gender non-conformity in a highly heteronormative society. This study investigates how prolific women fans of the Zambian Feminists page contest, negotiate and appropriate meanings from the posts and associated comments into their lives as “everyday feminists”. As a reception study, it inquires into how Lusaka women fans of the page negotiate their roles as strong feminists online and their offline social roles as women, mothers, daughters and wives living in a patriarchal and conservative society. The study draws primarily on qualitative research methods, specifically qualitative focus group discussions and individual in-depth interviews, to investigate this audience’s reception of the page’s content. The study establishes that Zambian Feminists is consumed in a complex environment where contesting notions of Christianity, traditionalism, and modernity are at play. The study also shows how a Christian nationalism discourse acts as a stumbling block to women fans identifying as feminists and women fans who identify as members of the LGBTIQ community, as they must negotiate and construct their identity against this prevailing discourse. The study concludes that inasmuch as the Zambian Feminist page provides a platform for women to ‘call out’ and challenge patriarchy, sexism and misogyny, the offline space is more difficult to overcome; Zambian women continue to conform to patriarchal norms as they construct and negotiate their feminism in line with the broader societal gender order. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Journalism and Media Studies, 2021
