A germination test carried out also revealed that the resultant vermicompost had no inhibitory effect on the germination of tomato, carrot, and radish. Extractable P increased with stocking density up to 22.5 g-worm kg-1 feedstock, suggesting that for maximum P release from RP enriched wastes, a high stocking density should be considered. Informed by an earlier study which demonstrated that RP improved vermidegration, a follow up study was done to determine the optimum amount of rock phosphate necessary for efficient vermidegradation of cow dung waste paper mixtures while ensuring a phosphorus rich vermicompost. The results showed that addition of RP at rates ≤ 1% P as RP efficiently enhanced the bioconversion of cow dung waste paper mixtures as reflected by low C: N ratio, high polymerization index (PI), HI and HR used as maturity indicators for matured compost. Final vermicompost products obtained at minimum amounts of RP application rates resulted highly humified vermicompost with finer morphological structure, with no inhibitory effect on the germination of tomato, carrot, and radish similar to the ones obtained at higher RP rates. The findings suggest that 1%P as RP application rate is optimum for efficient vermidegradation of cow dung waste paper mixtures. Since P or Ca happen to be the most prevalent elements in most rock phosphate used for compost enrichment, a study was carried out to determine if P or Ca in RP is predominantly responsible for the improved biodegradation of cow-dung waste paper mixture observed during vermicomposting. Phosphorus sources in form of triple superphosphate (TSP), phosphoric acid (PHA) and Ca in form of calcium chloride (CaCl2) salt were compared with rock phosphate. The results from the study indicated that TSP, a water soluble P source, resulted in greater and faster degradation of the waste mixtures than RP while the Ca source had the least effect. With TSP incorporation the compost maturity C: N ratio of 12 was reached within 28 days while RP, PHA and CaCl2 needed 42, 56 and more than 56 days, respectively. The results indicated that P was largely responsible for the enhanced bioconversion of the waste mixtures. This appeared linked to the effect of P to stimulate microbial growth as reflected by higher microbial biomass carbon levels where water soluble P sources were applied. The C: N ratios of the final vermicomposts at day 56 were 10, 11.5, 13, 14, and 23 for TSP, RP,PHA, Control (No P added) and CaCl2 treatments, respectively. Although TSP gave superior superior performance, RP may still be the preferred additive in the vermicomposting of cow dung waste paper mixtures as it is cheaper and produces mature compost in a shorter period of 8 weeks. Generally, the results of this study have shown that the vemidegradation of cow dung waste paper mixtures can be optimized through adoption of an E. fetida stocking density of 12.5g- worm kg-1 and an RP incorporation rate of 1% P as RP. However, higher rates of RPincorporation may be adopted where final vermicomposts with higher P fertilizer value are desired. Phosphorus appears to be the RP constituent responsible for its ability to enhance the vermidegradation of cow dung waste paper mixtures. Future studies should explore the effectiveness of other P-bearing minerals for their effectiveness in enhancing vemidegradation.]]> Wed 12 May 2021 23:05:12 SAST ]]> Investigation of the NFC technology for mobile payments and the development of a prototype payment application in the context of marginalized rural areas https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:39802 Wed 12 May 2021 23:04:40 SAST ]]> Enhanced visualisation techniques to support access to personal information across multiple devices https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10500 Wed 12 May 2021 23:00:25 SAST ]]> Experiences of teachers working in a deprived environment, with specific reference to their emotional intelligence https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:9572 Wed 12 May 2021 22:45:13 SAST ]]> Evaluating the post-implementation effectiveness of selected household water treatment technologies in rural Kenya https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:6045 Wed 12 May 2021 22:42:16 SAST ]]> Perceived value creation in technology-based entrepreneurial businesses https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:9329 Wed 12 May 2021 22:36:36 SAST ]]> Development of a bulbine frutescens and carpobrotus edulis cream in collaboration with african traditional healers of the Nelson Mandela Metropole https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10358 Wed 12 May 2021 22:29:58 SAST ]]> Digital storytelling to explore HIV- and AIDS- related stigma with secondary school learners in a rural community in KwaZulu-Natal https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:9576 Wed 12 May 2021 22:23:46 SAST ]]> The establishment of a mobile phone information security culture: linking student awareness and behavioural intent https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26485 Wed 12 May 2021 20:56:58 SAST ]]> ‘Gender’ and constructions of spousal mourning among the AmaXhosa in the Eastern Cape https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3249 Wed 12 May 2021 20:36:10 SAST ]]> Trophic relationships of hake (Merluccius capensis Castelnau, 1851 and M. paradoxus Franca 1960) from the Northern Benguela current ecosystem (Namibia) : inferences from stable isotopes and fatty acids https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5944 Wed 12 May 2021 20:18:16 SAST ]]> Electrospun fiber based colorimetric probes for aspartate aminotransferase and I7ß-estradiol https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26623 Wed 12 May 2021 20:17:12 SAST ]]> Towards the development of a larval feeding strategy for the white-margined sole (Dagetichthys marginatus) https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5364 Wed 12 May 2021 19:59:16 SAST ]]> The changing image of women in Francis Imbuga's Oeuvre https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:20373 Wed 12 May 2021 19:57:10 SAST ]]> Structural, optical and electrical characterization of nano-sized c-tio2 quamtum dots synthesized by spray pyrolysis https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11342 Wed 12 May 2021 19:48:12 SAST ]]> “The stranger at home” : representations of home and hospitality in three South African post-transitional novels https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:2325 Wed 12 May 2021 19:46:38 SAST ]]> Efficacy of two medical plant extracts and metformin in the prevention of diet induced fatty liver https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26461 5% per liver weight in all treated groups. Maximum adsorption observed for BTO₂, DBTO₂ and 4,6-DMDBTO₂ respectively was 8.5 ± 0.6 mg/g, 7.0 ± 0.5 mg/g and 6.6 ± 0.7 mg/g when imprinted chitosan nanofibers were employed, 4.9 ± 0.5 mg/g, 4.2 ± 0.7 mg/g and 3.9 ± 0.6 mg/g on molecularly imprinted chitosan microspheres, and 28.5 ± 0.4 mg/g, 29.8 ± 2.2 mg/g and 20.1 ± 1.4 mg/g on molecularly imprinted PBI nanofibers. Application of electrospun chitosan nanofibers on oxidized hydro-treated diesel presented a sulfur removal capacity of 84%, leaving 62 ± 3.2 ppm S in the fuel, while imprinted PBI electrospun nanofibers displayed excellent sulfur removal, keeping sulfur in the fuel after the oxidation/adsorption below the determined limit of detection (LOD), which is 2.4 ppm S. The high level of sulfur removal displayed by imprinted PBI nanofibers was ascribed to hydrogen bonding effects, and π-π stacking between aromatic sulfone compounds and the benzimidazole ring which were confirmed by chemical modelling with density functional theory (DFT) as well as the imprinting effect. The home-made pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) system was applied for extraction/desorption of sulfone compounds adsorbed on the PBI nanofibers at a flow rate of 1 mL/min and at 150°C with an applied pressure of 30 bars. Application of molecularly imprinted PBI nanofibers for the desulfurization of oxidized hydro-treated fuel showed potential for use in refining industries to reach ultra-low sulfur fuel level, which falls below the 10 ppm sulfur limit which is mandated by the environmental protection agency (EPA) from 2015.]]> Wed 12 May 2021 15:53:07 SAST ]]> Wild vegetables of the Eastern Cape of South Africa: the nutritional value and domestication of solanum nigrum l https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11885 Wed 12 May 2021 15:51:10 SAST ]]> Narratives that shape the professional identities of mathematics teachers https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:1995 Wed 12 May 2021 15:47:01 SAST ]]> The impact of economic freedom on economic growth in the SADC https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:9030 Wed 12 May 2021 15:43:31 SAST ]]> Study of the interrelationship between weld geometry, process variables and joint intergrity for friction processed AA6082-T6 aluminium https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:40467 Wed 12 May 2021 14:04:19 SAST ]]> Empathy in the time of ecological apartheid : a social sculpture practice-led inquiry into developing pedagogies for ecological citizenship https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:1985 Thu 16 May 2024 05:37:59 SAST ]]> Political party institutionalization : a case study of Kenya https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:2881 Thu 13 May 2021 15:46:00 SAST ]]> Nonlinear optical studies of metallophtalocyanines and hemiporphyrazines in solution https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4464 Thu 13 May 2021 14:21:31 SAST ]]> Pope John Paul II: a psychobiographical study https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:20440 Thu 13 May 2021 14:16:09 SAST ]]> Modelling payment systems for environmental services in the Mt Elgon ecosystem of Kenya https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11206 Thu 13 May 2021 12:10:03 SAST ]]> Mobilising processes of abstraction, experiential learning and representation of traditional ecological knowledge in participatory monitoring of mangroves and fisheries : an approach towards enhancing social learning processes on the eastern coast of Tanzania https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:1979 Thu 13 May 2021 11:32:22 SAST ]]> Purification and characterization of TbHsp70.c, a novel Hsp70 from Trypanosoma brucei https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4105 Thu 13 May 2021 10:52:51 SAST ]]> Development of styrene based imprinted sorbents for selective clean-up of metalloporphyrins in organic media https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26580 99 % in selectively extracting the metalloporphyrins. Upstream invasion by centrarchids isolated and fragmented P. afer populations into headwater refugia, while top down invasion by salmonids excluded B. trevelyani from invaded, more pristine stream reaches, by forcing the species into degraded unsuitable lower stream reaches. Predation also disrupted population processes such as adult dispersal for P. afer, and centrarchid-invaded zones acted as demographic sinks, where adults dispersing through invaded reaches were rapidly depleted. While the Mandela lineage of P. afer exhibited little within or between drainage genetic structuring, B. trevelyani was >4% divergent between drainages, and up to 2% divergent between streams within the Keiskamma River system (Chapter 7). The distribution of genetic diversity for B. trevelyani also indicated that the loss of diversity was imminent without immediate conservation interventions. This thesis has provided conclusive evidence that native fishes are vulnerable to invasion and that non-native predatory fishes have significant impacts on native fishes in Eastern Cape headwater streams. If management and conservation measures are implemented, the unwanted introduction and spread of non-native fishes may be restricted, allowing native fishes opportunities for recovery.]]> Thu 13 May 2021 07:28:56 SAST ]]> Strength training and cardiovascular risk post-menses, with particular emphasis on the plasma lipoproteins: a controlled trial https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5155 Thu 13 May 2021 07:27:29 SAST ]]> Statistical modelling for detection of fraudulent activity on banking cards https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:39314 Thu 13 May 2021 07:23:53 SAST ]]> Modelling the hydrological responses to changes in land use and cover in the Malaba River Catchment, Eastern Uganda https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10670 Thu 13 May 2021 07:19:36 SAST ]]> Molecular systematics and antifreeze biology of sub-Antarctic notothenioid fishes https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5388 Thu 13 May 2021 07:10:52 SAST ]]> Implementation of student retention programmes by two South African universities: towards a comprehensive student retention model https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:16204 Thu 13 May 2021 06:46:27 SAST ]]> Synthetic analogues of marine bisindole alkaloids as potent selective inhibitors of MRSA pyruvate kinase https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4563 Thu 13 May 2021 06:38:31 SAST ]]> Electrospun fibre based colorimetric probes for biological molecules https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4535 Thu 13 May 2021 06:36:49 SAST ]]> Practice guidelines for culturally sensitive drug prevention interventions https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10005 Thu 13 May 2021 06:28:32 SAST ]]> Housing challenges in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality: an exploration https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26539 Thu 13 May 2021 06:24:46 SAST ]]> The influence of indigenous languages on Ugandan English as used in the media https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3646 Thu 13 May 2021 06:00:50 SAST ]]> Swift heavy ion radiation damage in nanocrystalline ZrN https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10550 Thu 13 May 2021 05:57:43 SAST ]]> Molecular phylogeny, phylogeography and evolutionary adaptation of foraging behaviour amongst sympatric patellid limpets along the southern African shoreline https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5882 Thu 13 May 2021 05:49:20 SAST ]]> Investigating the English vocabulary needs, exposure, and knowledge of isiXhosa speaking learners for transition from learning to read in the Foundation Phase to reading to learn in the Intermediate Phase : a case study https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:1968 Thu 13 May 2021 05:36:23 SAST ]]> Exploring teaching proficiency in geometry of selected effective mathematics teachers in Namibia https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:1976 Thu 13 May 2021 05:19:48 SAST ]]> Understanding and modelling of surface and groundwater interactions https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:6043 Thu 13 May 2021 04:31:00 SAST ]]> Some general convergence theorems on fixed points https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5426 Thu 13 May 2021 04:17:52 SAST ]]> Fishing for resilience : herbivore and algal dynamics on coral reefs in Kenya. https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5877 1 yr in the absence of herbivores) and showed that sea urchins and browsing fishes were able to remove significant amounts of macroalgae where either herbivore was abundant. However, using multiple-choice selectivity assays and in situ video recordings, I found that browsing fishes fed very selectively with low overlap in diet among species, leading to low functional redundancy within a high diversity system. Finally, using long-term survey data (from 28 sites) to build a 43-year chronosequence, I showed that it is possible that the effects of herbivory will not be constant across transitions from open fishing to fishery closures through non-linear grazing intensity. Therefore, increases in herbivory within fisheries closures may not be immediate and may allow a window of opportunity for algae to go from turf to unpalatable macroalgae until scraping and browsing fishes fully recover from fishing (~ 20 years). The findings in this thesis are novel and raise concern over the potential implications of the slow recovery of parrotfishes or, given lower than expected functional redundancy in grazing effects, the absence of even one browsing fish species in fisheries closures. Overall, this thesis highlights the importance of herbivore community dynamics in mediating interactions among algae, and provides new insights for conservation and management actions that attempt to bolster the resilience of coral reefs.]]> Thu 13 May 2021 04:09:10 SAST ]]> The design of quantum dots and their conjugates as luminescent probes for analyte sensing https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4457 Thu 13 May 2021 03:30:35 SAST ]]> Evaluating the implementation of the principles of good governance in Zimbabwe local government system : a case of Marondera local municipality https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:39453 Thu 13 May 2021 03:28:24 SAST ]]> Inter-individual variability and phenotypic plasticity : the effect of the environment on the biogeography, population structure, ecophysiology and reproduction of the sandhoppers Talorchestia capensis and Africorchestia quadrispinosa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5846 Thu 13 May 2021 03:19:43 SAST ]]> Targeting and characterizing potentially high yield aquifers in the neotectonic zones in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11530 Thu 13 May 2021 03:15:20 SAST ]]> The plasmodium falciparum exported Hsp40 co-chaperone, PFA0660w https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4108 Thu 13 May 2021 03:02:47 SAST ]]> Isolation, purification and partial characterisation of cancer procoagulant from placental amnion-chorion membranes and its role in angiogenesis inflammation and metastasis https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10350 Thu 13 May 2021 02:45:06 SAST ]]> Enabling cumulative knowledge-building through teaching: a legitimation code theory analysis of pedagogic practice in law and political science https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:1966 Thu 13 May 2021 02:30:31 SAST ]]> Direct and indirect effects of zooplanktivorous predators on the estuarine plankton community https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5870 Thu 13 May 2021 02:28:03 SAST ]]> The consolidation of forecests with regression models https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10582 Thu 13 May 2021 01:30:28 SAST ]]> Establishing a formulation design space for a generic clobetasol 17- propionate cream using the principles of quality by design https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:20983 Thu 13 May 2021 01:13:37 SAST ]]> “Watch-dogs for an Economy” : a determination of the origins of the South African Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board – as the Regulator of the Profession – principally through an analysis of the debates and related reports to the House of Assembly of the Parliament of the Union of South Africa in the period 1913–1940 https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:922 Thu 13 May 2021 01:13:00 SAST ]]> Patterns and drivers of benthic macrofouna to support systematic conservation planning for marine unconsolidated sediment ecosystems https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10355 Thu 13 May 2021 01:04:00 SAST ]]> In vitro induction of cell death pathways by artemisia afra extract and isolation of an active compound, isoalantolactone https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:10363 Thu 13 May 2021 01:01:02 SAST ]]> Stakeholders' participation in curriculum development in four secondary schools in Fort Beaufort education district, Eastern cape province: towards a participatory curriculum model https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:29401 Thu 13 May 2021 00:39:35 SAST ]]> The role of the deep spawning grounds in chokka squid (Loligo reynaudi d'orbigny, 1845) recruitment https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5359 Thu 13 May 2021 00:19:27 SAST ]]> Mechanisms, analysis and characterisation of mechanical properties of laser formed commercially pure grade 2 titanium alloy plates https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:9641 Thu 13 May 2021 00:13:20 SAST ]]> Development of conservation methods for gunnera perpensa l.: an overexploited medicinal plant in the Eastern Cape, South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:11311 Thu 13 May 2021 00:03:33 SAST ]]>
