Medicinal plants play an integral role in the provision of basic health care in Zimbabwe. However, the brine shrimp lethality test results categorised some of the prescribed species such as Albizia amara, Datura stramonium and Ricinus communis as having medium levels of toxicity and this is a cause of concern regarding utilization of TMPs during pregnancy. The present situation in which communal areas support large livestock populations under continuous grazing is due to the fact that cattle would adjust to changes in forage availability by seeking higher biomass patches in times of forage scarcity as observed in Magwiji. At the coastal forest thornveld of Mnyameni the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the first axis was significantly correlated with soil organic carbon (r = -1, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the species that were significantly correlated with the first axis were Cynodon dactylon and Pennisetum clandestinum. These species were mainly found in sites that were preferred in April and June. At the sourveld of Upper Mnxe the first axis was significantly correlated with soil pH (r = 0.9, p < 0.05). At this rangeland, sites selected in June were associated with alkaline soils; characterized by a history of human settlement and dominated by Eragrostis superba and Heteropogon contortus. Soil electrical conductivity (EC) separated species (r = 0.9; p < 0.05) along the first axis at Magwiji, with mountain top sites selected in April and June having low EC and dominated by Digitaria eriantha, Eragrostis superba and Andropogon appendiculatus. Rangeland heterogeneity is caused by various factors, ranging from human disturbance to topography. These factors have an effect on the soil properties, and therefore, vegetation and thus lead to the observed heterogeneity which shapes the utilization patterns of these rangelands, and hence their continued support of large populations of livestock. To understand the effects of seasonal and spatial variation in resource use pattern and implications on range management, differences in cattle activity patterns in relation to veld type, season, daytime, management type (kraaling) and forage quality were examined. Seasonal activity patterns were only significant at Upper Mnxe (p < 0.05), with percent of time spent grazing (77 percent), resting (35 percent) and walking (24 percent) being higher in April, November and June respectively.]]> Tue 16 May 2023 11:15:04 SAST ]]> Study of the biotransformations and microbiological properties of cymbopogon citratus https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:43197 10 mg mL-1. The effects of combining the crude extracts of these plants with eight antibiotics were investigated by means of checkerboard and agar diffusion methods. On using the methanol extract of A. mearnsii, the agar diffusion assay showed that extract-kanamycin combination had zones of inhibition ≥ 20 ± 1.0 mm in all the bacteria tested (100percent), followed by extract chloramphenicol (90percent) > extract-ciprofloxacin = extract-tetracycline (70percent) > extract amoxicillin (60percent) > extract-nalidixic acid (50percent) > extract-erythromycin (40percent) > extract metronidazole (20percent). The checkerboard showed synergistic interaction (61.25percent), additivity/indifference (23.75percent) and antagonistic (15percent) effects. I, therefore, concluded that the antibacterial potentials of the antibiotics were improved and combining natural products with antibiotic could be a potential source of resistance-modifying agents useful against multi-drug resistant bacteria. The influences of these extracts on the ultrastructures, elemental components, protein and lipid leakages of five different bacteria were determined as the possible mechanisms of action of the extracts investigated. The scanning electron microscopy indicated varied ultrastructural changes in the morphology of bacterial cells treated with the extracts. The X-ray microanalysis showed significant differences between the elemental contents of extract-treated and untreated bacteria while lipids and proteins were leaked to a great extent from the extract-treated bacterial strains in comparison with the untreated ones. The possible mechanisms of action of the extracts may include inhibition of a significant step in peptidoglycan assembly, inhibition of metabolic processes, disruption of cell wall and cell membranes resulting in the efflux of lipid and protein in all the bacteria tested. The possible mechanism of action involved in the lipid and protein leakages in the bacterial cells could be attributed to lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation owing to the antioxidant activities of the extracts that were active beyond the protective levels. I concluded that the morphological changes and the observed leakages showed rapid killing, significant membrane depolarization resulting in leakages and efflux of disintegrated cellular materials. In general, this study has justified the ethnotherapeutic importance of A. mearnsii and Z. mucronata subsp. mucronata in the treatment of microbial infections by indicating the possible mechanisms of action of the crude extracts on the tested bacteria.]]> Fri 12 May 2023 15:13:04 SAST ]]> A study of the selected wild edible plants utilized by indigenous people of the Amathole District in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:43147 Fri 11 Jun 2021 15:07:00 SAST ]]> A study of rural self-help groups in the context of government-assisted community development: the case of Peddie, Eastern Cape, South Africa. https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:43152 Fri 11 Jun 2021 15:02:22 SAST ]]> The implementation of national health strategy (2009-2013) in Vungu District clinics, Midlands Province in Zimbabwe https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:44454 Fri 10 Sep 2021 13:27:31 SAST ]]> Production and biochemical characterization of new bioflocculants from bacteria isolated from freshwater and marine environments of the Eastern Cape in South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:62445 Fri 10 Mar 2023 12:31:28 SAST ]]> Social policy and regional integration in SADC: a regional health care perspective https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:43386 Fri 09 Jul 2021 10:59:21 SAST ]]> Strategies employed by teachers to assist Grade 4 learners transition from mother tongue instruction to English as a medium of instruction https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:45029 Fri 05 Nov 2021 12:59:43 SAST ]]> Water restriction and vitamin c supplementation on Xhosa goats during summer: Effect on growth performance, blood biochemical profile, nutrient balance, carcass characteristics and meat quality https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:52664 0.05) improve the effect of water restriction on body condition scores (BCs), FAMACHA©, glucose, globulin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). In the second objective, intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen and mineral balance were evaluated. The reduced nutrient intake was similar (P>0.05) irrespective of water restrictions and VC supplementations. Water-restriction levels did not affect nutrient intake/metabolic weight. Retained nitrogen increased with water-restriction levels but not influenced by VC. NH3-N decreased with the levels of water restriction while the pH was similar across the water restricted groups. Supplementation of VC had no effect (P>0.05) on apparent digestibility and digestible nutrients induced by water restriction levels. The amount of Ca, K, Mg retained increased (P<0.05) with water-restriction levels. In the third objective, stress indices, carcass characteristics and meat quality parameters were evaluated. The level of plasma cortisol concentration due to water stress was lessened (P<0.05) by VC. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH) and insulin were not affected (P>0.05) by levels of water restriction. The hot and carcass weights were lower (P<0.05) in W70+ and W50+ compared to W70 and W50 respectively. Vitamin C treated goats had higher redness (a*) compared to W70, W50 and W0. The shear force and cooking loss increased (P<0.05) with water restriction levels, while thaw loss, pH45min and pH24h were not affected by water restriction levels. In the final objective, the treatments did not affect (P>0.05) the oxidative stability of lipids (TBARS). The moisture and fat content in the water restricted groups were lower (P<0.05) than W0. The consumer meat sensory appearance decreased (P<0.05) with levels of water restrictions. Regardless of VC concentration and supplementation, vaccenic, and docosahexaenoic acid increased (P<0.05) while linolenic acid decreased as the water restriction levels increased. Nonetheless, treatment did not affect (P>0.05) the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. These studies showed that suboptimal water intake negatively affects the growth performance and nutrient intake of Xhosa goats. However, the reduction in body weight loss and decreased plasma cortisol (chief stress hormone) concentration following vitamin C supplementation (especially at a daily single dose [3g/d]) may well reduce the effect of water stress in goats.]]> Fri 01 Jul 2022 13:18:00 SAST ]]>
