Hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and type II diabetes, were grouped as cardiovascular (CV) risks. Hypertension was defined as a blood pressure greater than 140/90mmHg (JNC-7); hypercholesterolemia, as total cholesterol greater than 6.2mmol.L-1 (NCEP); and type II diabetes, as total glucose greater than 12mmol.L-1 (WHO). Physical activity, diet, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption and dependence were grouped as lifestyle-related risks. These were assessed by means of self-reporting through the use of various validated questionnaires. Finally, self-reporting of obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and type II diabetes was assessed, in addition to perception questions on individuals’ perceived body shape and size (Ziebland figures). Self-reported and perceived responses were then compared to actual measures. Females were significantly (p<0.001) heavier than the males (92.7kg compared to 72.1kg) and had significantly (p<0.001) higher BMIs than their male counterparts (37.6kg.m-2 compared to 25.7 kg.-2). They also recorded significantly (p<0.001) higher waist circumference (WC) values and had significantly (p<0.001) higher percentage and total body fat. Significantly (p<0.001) more females were obese (81%) compared to males (17%). While a higher percentage of males (25 % compared to 22%) presented with stage I hypertension (≥140/90mmHg, <160/95mmHg), significantly (p<0.05) more females (14% compared to 8%) presented with stage II hypertension (>160/95mmHg). The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia at a high level of risk (>6.2mmol.L-1) was relatively low (2.1 % of males, 3.4% of females), but notably more participants (22% of males and 26% of females) presented with the condition at a moderate level of risk (>5mmol.L-1). Type II diabetes was the least prevalent CV risk factor, with no males and only 3% of females presenting with the condition. Males consumed significantly (p<0.05) more in terms of total energy intake (9024 vs. 7234 kJ) and were significantly (p<0.05) more active (3315 compared to 2660 MET-mins.week). A significantly (p<0.05) higher percentage of males smoked (51.1% compared to 3.4%), consumed alcohol (73.4% compared to 46.6%) and were alcohol dependent (40% compared to 33.5%). Both males and females tended to be ignorant of their health status, with both samples under-reporting obesity, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, while over-reporting type II diabetes. Furthermore, obesity was significantly (p<0.05) underestimated, with both male and female individuals perceiving themselves to be notably smaller than they actually were. Physical activity and diet were important determinants of CVD risk in this black urban sample of individuals. Obesity, in particular central adiposity, was the most notable risk (particularly in females), followed by hypertension (particularly in males). Although some risks presented at a moderate level of risk, a clustering of risk factors was evident in both samples, with 12.6% and 41.2% of males and females presenting with two risk factors, and 2.8% and 8.1% of males and females respectively presenting with three risks.]]> Wed 12 Oct 2022 12:08:41 SAST ]]> The influence of soccer-specific fatigue on the risk of thigh injuries in amateur black African players https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5100 Wed 12 Oct 2022 11:53:52 SAST ]]> Rates of return to education of blacks in South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5565 Wed 12 Oct 2022 08:26:31 SAST ]]> Bayesian accelerated life tests: exponential and Weibull models https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:20351 Wed 12 Jul 2023 19:04:25 SAST ]]> The response of the two interrelated river components, geomorphology and riparian vegetation, to interbasin water transfers in the Orange-Fish-Sundays River Interbasin Transfer Scheme https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4850 Wed 10 Aug 2022 06:00:16 SAST ]]> The synthesis of functionalized carbon nanomaterial from waste tyre sourced carbon for chemosensing during purification processes https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:30794 Wed 08 Feb 2023 09:51:50 SAST ]]> Phylogeny and phylogeography of dominant South African surf diatoms https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:30778 Wed 08 Feb 2023 09:41:49 SAST ]]> The Jesus People : attitude, personal-orientation and life-style changes as a function of non-conformist religious influence https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3242 Wed 05 Apr 2023 08:08:59 SAST ]]> Occurrence of mugilid and sparid fishes in Zostera capensis and bare sediment habitats of the Knysna Estuary https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26641 Wed 03 May 2023 13:21:12 SAST ]]> Primary controls on iron and manganese distribution in sphalerite of the Gams Formation, Gamsberg zinc deposit, Namaqualand, South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28488 Wed 03 May 2023 13:07:26 SAST ]]> The implementation of a push-pull programme for the control of Eldana saccharina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in sugarcane in the coastal regions of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28390 Tue 27 Jul 2021 16:09:02 SAST ]]> An investigation into the loss of preservatives from opthalmic solutions, during filtration sterilization https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3851 Tue 24 May 2022 16:01:37 SAST ]]> Some aspects of the biology of Nassarius kraussianus (Dunker)(Gastropoda : Prosobranchia : Nassariidae), in the Bushman's River estuary, with particular reference to recolonisation after floods https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5809 Tue 24 Aug 2021 16:43:49 SAST ]]> The impact of HIV/AIDS on rural children's reliance on natural resources within the Eastern Cape, South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4759 Tue 22 Nov 2022 10:03:40 SAST ]]> Understanding social-ecological changes in Fairbairn village, Eastern Cape https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:21257 Tue 19 Jul 2022 11:57:18 SAST ]]> A convenient approach to the deterministic routing of MIDI messages https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28387 Tue 16 May 2023 14:59:05 SAST ]]> Towards a collection of cost-effective technologies in support of the NIST cybersecurity framework https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28199 Tue 16 May 2023 12:53:17 SAST ]]> Post-release evaluation of the biological control programme against Cereus jamacaru De Candolle (Cactaceae), in South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:21330 Tue 15 Aug 2023 11:29:32 SAST ]]> Post-release evaluation of Megamelus scutellaris Berg. This study aimed to address this information gap. Dive surveys were conducted along 10 m long transects (~3 reps) at three depth zones (<1m; 1-2m; > 2m) for four sites along the span of the ranching concession area. Similar assessments were done at a seeded site at the Noordhoek Ski Boat Club and an unseeded site at the Willows area, in order to reveal whether seeding had any impact on the benthic community. Images from a GoPro mounted in the centre of a framer unit (0.5 m2) were taken every 0.5 m along the transect. Macroalgal and macrofaunal cover was determined from these images, and the benthic community characterised from these data. Seaweed samples were taken for species identification. In the four baseline sites, sampling was done at three depth zones to note any changes with a depth gradient, both in terms of substrate type, as well as community composition. There was a notable trend with substrate type having a significant influence (P<0.05) on the community structure. Seaweed communities were dominated by Plocamium corallorhiza and coralline turf based on substrate types. There was also a significant relationship (P<0.05) between substrate type, dominant seaweed species and abalone presence. A Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) of the community data suggested that the benthic community does not change significantly along the distance of coastline sampled. A hierarchical cluster analysis of Bray-Curtis dissimilarity for transect data also suggested that the four sites do not represent ecologically dissimilar communities. A similar analysis showed that abalone seeding had to date not altered the benthic community in shallow seeded areas from the community described for shallow unseeded areas. The study was used to describe the baseline benthic community in areas west of Cape Recife, examine the natural variability along the coast, and determine whether there are relationships between the benthic community composition and emergent abalone abundance. This information will be useful in selection of habitats for abalone seeding in the future. It is important that monitoring and surveying of the study area are to be continued in so allowing for long term data collection which will help in making informed decisions as well as documenting the impact in seeded areas when compared to unseeded areas.]]> Tue 12 Mar 2024 15:12:54 SAST ]]> Spatial variation in modelled hydrodynamic characteristics associated with valley confinement in the Krom River wetland: implications for the initiation of erosional gullies https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:27356 Tue 09 May 2023 15:48:03 SAST ]]> NetwIOC: a framework for the automated generation of network-based IOCS for malware information sharing and defence https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:27809 Tue 09 May 2023 10:46:58 SAST ]]> Assessing estuarine nursery habitats for Cape Stumpnose (Rhabdosargus holubi), (Pisces: Sparidae) in a warm-temperate estuary in the Eastern Cape, South Africa https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:20381 Thu 29 Sep 2022 14:28:44 SAST ]]> The metabolic physiology of early stage Argyrosomus japonicus with insight into the potential effects of pCO2 induced ocean acidification https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26094 Thu 29 Sep 2022 14:21:25 SAST ]]> Early stage ichthyofauna from shallow water habitats of the Angola-Benguela frontal zone https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:25988 Thu 29 Sep 2022 14:20:40 SAST ]]> The taxonomy, life-history and population dynamics of blacktail, Diplodus Capensis (Perciformes: Sparidae), in southern Angola https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5324 Thu 29 Sep 2022 14:19:13 SAST ]]> Effects of CO2-induced ocean acidification on the early development, growth, survival and skeletogenesis of the estuarine-dependant sciaenid Argyrosomus japonicus https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:27799 Thu 29 Sep 2022 14:18:31 SAST ]]> Genetic and morphometric variation of Octopus vulgaris in the Benguela Current region https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:5362 Thu 29 Sep 2022 14:15:59 SAST ]]> Towards defining the tipping point of tolerance to CO2-induced ocean acidification for the growth, development and metabolism of larval dusky kob Argyrosomus japonicus (Pisces: Sciaenidae) https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:29924 0.05), development or the active metabolic (P > 0.05) or metabolic scope (P > 0.05) of fish in the three treatments throughout the study. However, the standard metabolic rate was significantly higher in the year 2068 treatment but only at the flexion/post-flexion stage which could be attributed to differences in developmental rates (including the development of the gills) between the 2068 and the other two treatments. Overall, the metabolic scope was narrowest in the 2090 treatment, but varied according to life stage. Although not significantly different, metabolic scope in the 2090 treatment was noticeably lower at the flexion stage compared to the other two treatments, and the development appeared slower, suggesting that this could be the stage most prone to OA. The study concluded that, in isolation, OA levels predicted to occur between 2050 and 2090 will not negatively affect size-at-hatch, growth, development, and metabolic responses of larval A. japonicus up to 22 DAH (flexion/post-flexion stage). Taken together with the previous studies of the same species, the tipping point of tolerance (where negative impacts will begin) in larvae of the species appears to be between the years 2090 and The 1:2 ratio of cisplatin:BC-7 and the 2:1 ratio of cisplatin:A. afra were additive. CI values were also calculated at inhibition of 10, 25 and 75% of HeLa cell growth, for each combination mixture. Antagonistic effects were frequently observed at lower effect levels such as at 10 and 25% inhibition of growth. However, this was not seen for the cisplatin:BC-7 combinations as all the ratios indicated synergism. Some of these ratios, such as the 1:3 and 1:2, even led to a greater degree of synergism being obtained, with noticeable antagonistic effects seen at 50 and 75% inhibition of growth. The current finding is that BC-7 and A. afra could lower the dose of cisplatin in combination to achieve a similar anti-cancer efficacy compared to the higher cisplatin dose when used alone. The lower dosage in combination could result in reduced drug resistance as well as limit the toxicity on normal cells associated with cisplatin treatment. In conclusion, this study shows, for the first time, that A. nemorosa has the potential to induce apoptosis and also has some anti- and pro-inflammatory activity in HeLa cancer cells. This study also enhanced the knowledge of the mechanism of apoptosis induction of BC-7, in a more detailed manner, as well as investigated its inflammatory effects for the first time. Results obtained for A. afra correlated nicely to previously reported studies and confirmed that the methods used in this study, although different, leads to the same conclusions. Combination treatments also indicated, for the first time, that BC-7 and A. afra have the ability to function in a synergic manner with cisplatin and proves that, although extensive research may have been done on a plant or compound, more can be discovered. This new information can lead to identification of new compounds in the plants and the integration of signalling pathways that can be targeted for treatment of cancer.]]> Fri 15 Mar 2024 11:56:53 SAST ]]> An intergrated continuous flow system for the manufacture of biodiesel from waste cooking oil using a heterogeneous acid catalyst and homogeneous base catalyst https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:37837 Fri 15 Mar 2024 09:30:02 SAST ]]> Voltammetric analysis of pesticides and their degradation: A case study of Amitraz and its degradants https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4131 Fri 10 Dec 2021 08:54:22 SAST ]]> Studies towards the development of novel antimalarial agents https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:26596 Fri 09 Jun 2023 15:34:31 SAST ]]> Exploration potential for copperbelt - style mineralisation in NW Province, Zambia; soil geochemistry as a targeting tool https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28204 Fri 06 Aug 2021 11:56:45 SAST ]]> Phenolic compounds in water and the implications for rapid detection of indicator micro-organisms using ß-D-Galactosidase and ß-D-Glucuronidase https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3978 Fri 06 Aug 2021 11:41:17 SAST ]]> Understanding and quantifying channel transmission loss processes in the Limpopo River Basin https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28490 Fri 06 Aug 2021 11:00:38 SAST ]]> The thermal physiology of Stenopelmus rufinasus and Neohydronomus affinis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), biological control agents for the invasive alien aquatic weeds Azolla filiculoides and Pistia stratiotes respectively https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28158 Fri 06 Aug 2021 10:26:50 SAST ]]> A chemical investigation of Tulbaghia Violacea https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:4528 Fri 06 Aug 2021 10:23:42 SAST ]]> A study of the effects of the pineal hormone, melatonin, on dopaminergic transmission in the central nervous system of rats https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:3726 Fri 06 Aug 2021 10:17:09 SAST ]]> Periglacial landforms of the Ahlmannryggen and Jutulsessen areas of western Dronning Maud land, Antarctica https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28034 Fri 02 Jun 2023 11:43:09 SAST ]]> Practical application of distributed ledger technology in support of digital evidence integrity verification processes https://commons.ufh.ac.za/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:28070 Fri 02 Jun 2023 09:09:15 SAST ]]>
