  • Description: The girl playing this mouth bow whistles out of the side of her mouth as well as resonating the notes in the usual manner. She used the open string and a stopped note, stopping it with her thumbnail and first finger. The use of this indigenious instrument and its style of music explains the ease with which Gcaleka people take to the small concertina. The harmonies produced in the mouth being on the true harmonic series makes the transition to the concertina a simple matter for simple tunes. Notes of the bow, 292 and 260.   • Description: Sung by the girls after the initiation ceremonies are over. They dress up in skins and wear small mirrors and go about among the houses and people, dancing and asking for presents. The initiation school lasts for two months and follows much the same lines as those of the Tswana. Many young Africans from Kenya southwards use metal whistles for their dances, blowing them continously as in this item; the result is deafening to the audience but apparently most enjoyable to the young who seem to be impervious to the noise.   • Description: The Lesiba is a wind blown stringed instrument, mostly played by herd boys as they herd their cattle on the hills. It consists of a slightly bent stick of abour 36-40 long. Along one side is strained a string, sometimes of horse hair or sinew, to one end of which is attached a section of fowl's quill. This is held in place by placing it between small double wedges held firmly in a small hole drilled into that end of the stick. Self-delectative song with Lesiba stick zither with quill.

  • Description: This group of young men had evidently been to the gold mines for they were all wearing the full mine trousers decorated with blue patches. One of them "Shortie" was the cause of much gaiety to the women spectators, who called out (in Baca) "try standing a bit higher, Sho'tie". His trousers were so long and billowing that even when they were hitched up round the knee, they fell in full and graceful folds like a skirt. Ndhlamu dance song with clapping.
